Bucky Barnes- Roadtrip
★ For lazyoverachiever 's contest ★
You yawned as you threw your backpack into the boot of Steve's new car before hesitantly making your way to the back seat. The interior was clean and fresh, and the smell of new car made you feel sick before the car even started.
Steve turned around and looked you in the eye, "Are you absolutely sure you'll be fine back there? I know you get sick..."
"For the last time," you chuckled, "I'll be fine. I've got my travel bands on. I'm just tired. I don't usually wake up at such an ungodly hour."
"3 am isn't that bad, you know. You're lucky I trust your judgement," Steve smiled before turning the key and starting car on its way to Florida. Tony had given the four of you a week's vacation, and Steve decided to go to Florida. The seventeen-hour drive didn't put him off at all.
"Why couldn't we have just taken a plane?" Sam whined.
"Do you even need me to answer that?" Steve said as he turned to look at Bucky, who was conveniently sat beside you, "There's no way we'd be able to get that arm through customs... Let alone the rest of him."
You had a crush on Bucky for a while now, and you thought this road trip would be the perfect opportunity to spend time with him, whether he felt the same for you or not. Everyone had already figured out that you had feelings for Barnes, except the man himself, thankfully; you couldn't handle the embarrassment and disappointment of him not reciprocating your feelings.
As you entered the outskirts of the city, everyone began to relax. You had wanted to go to Florida since you were a kid, and now that you had the chance, you couldn't wait to get there. You just never thought you'd be driving seventeen hours to get there.
For a while, everyone was quiet thanks to waking up so early, until you reached the highway. As Steve adjusted his mirror, he noticed you yawning.
"Tired?" He asked.
You yawned, "What do you think?"
"It's still dark. Get some rest."
"I'll be fine," you lied, rubbing your tired eyes, "Maybe later."
After an hour of driving, Sam finally got off his phone, and Bucky stopped staring out the window in pure boredom. You had begun to get more tired, and decided to tilt your chair back.
"Hey, Bucky?" You asked, "Can you please give me my pillow? Thanks."
Shoving your pillow under your head, you turned on your side and closed your eyes, falling asleep shortly after.
"How's (Y/N)?" Steve asked, glancing over at your sleeping form, "She's asleep?"
"Out like a light," Bucky added, a small smile forming on his lips, "I wonder if she's dreaming..."
"You're gone, Bucky boy. You are so gone for her," Sam teased, turning around to smirk at him.
"I'm going to shoot you, like a pigeon," Bucky hissed, while Sam tried not to laugh too loudly. He didn't want to wake you up; he cared for you. You were like the sister he never had.
Suddenly, you turned around on your other side, still asleep. Bucky couldn't take his eyes off you.
"She's so peaceful when she sleeps," he smiled, pushing your hair out of your face.
"Oh for goodness sake, Barnes, just tell her," Sam urged, "Well, when she wakes up."
"No way! What if she doesn't feel the same way?"
At this, both Steve and Sam turned around to face Bucky.
"Are you blind?" Steve said as he turned back to face the road, "It's pretty obvious she likes you too. I'm surprised she hasn't figured out you like her too."
Bucky looked over at your sleeping figure, "I love her."
Sam and Steve looked at each other from the corners of their eyes. It was the first time Bucky had admitted just how strong his feelings were for you. After another hour, you were still asleep, and Sam and Bucky were fighting over whether they should turn the air conditioning off or not.
"It's freezing up here," Sam whined, switching off the air conditioning.
"Are you nuts? I'm dying of heat back here," Bucky argued, leaning over to turn it back on.
"Quit it!" Steve whispered sternly, changing the controls to make the air conditioning go to the the face and the feet, "If you touch this one more ti-"
"Bucky," You said quietly, still fast asleep; dreaming.
"Yes?" He answered, confused as to whether you were talking in your sleep or not.
"I want some ice cream."
Definitely asleep.
"Hey," Steve smiled, "Remember when you used to talk in your sleep, Buck? Back when I used to stay over at your house?"
"I remember you told me I was telling you I lost my pants," Bucky said, his face tinting pink.
"You guys are just gonna carry on and pretend (Y/N) didn't say Bucky's name? She's dreaming about you, Barnes."
Bucky's only response was his face going an even deeper shade of pink.
"Woah, bikes," you said, speaking nonsense as you slept. Sam and Bucky both raised their eyebrows in confusion, holding back laughter.
"I love you too, Bucky."
That, that wasn't nonsense.
Suddenly, everyone went quiet. Steve looked at Sam, Sam looked at Bucky, Bucky looked at Steve, and then at you.
"I'm... I'm going to pull over and get some gas," Steve said awkwardly as he pulled up at a gas station.
"Sure," Bucky squeaked.
"There's no way I'm leaving the car after that," Sam smiled, punching Bucky in his flesh arm, "You son of a gun." The only thing Sam got in return was a former-soviet eye roll. Steve soon exited the car and began filling the car up with petrol.
"We gotta wake her up," Sam suggested, "It's almost nine. I think she's had enough sleep."
"If you say anything, I'm going to kill you," Bucky panicked.
"Why? She said it first."
Sam tickled your foot, which caused you to wake up quickly.
"Sam," you whined, "What the heck? I was sleeping."
"More like dreaming," he said, wiggling his eyebrows and glancing at Bucky.
"Yeah, and? That's what people do when they sleep," You asked, completely confused as you rubbed your eyes and pulled your hair up into a neat ponytail.
"I love you too, Bucky," Sam repeated in a high-pitched voice, his attempt at mimicking you, despite your voice not being that high. All of a sudden, your memory of the dream you had just had came flooding back, and you could feel your face burning up.
"I said that?"
Sam nodded. You couldn't dare to look at Bucky, afraid he thought of you as nothing but a friend.
"What the hell, man?" Sam growled, looking at Bucky who's mouth was agape, "Tell her now or I'll do it for you."
"I..." Bucky started, his face frozen in what you couldn't tell apart from awe or disgust, "I feel the same way."
It wasn't the latter.
"What? Is... Is this some kind of joke or?"
Suddenly, Bucky leaned over and planted a quick kiss on your lips, leaving you dumbfound.
"WOAH!" Steve had to do a double take as he opened the car door, "Finally."
"What 'finally'?" You mimicked, "Did you know about this?"
"About Bucky's feelings? Yes," Steve answered with a smirk.
"Let me repeat that. When I told you that I liked Bucky, you knew he liked me too? Yet you didn't say anything?"
"Um, yes," Steve said quietly.
Bucky spoke next, "Hang on. You mean to say that whenever I talked to you about (Y/N), you knew she liked me and you didn't say anything? I freaked out for nothing?"
Steve nodded.
"I can't believe this," you and Bucky said in unison, faces tinting red when you realised you had said the same thing. For a few minutes, the car went quiet; no one spoke.
"I didn't want to break my promise," Steve finally said, "You'd both told me not to say anything to the other."
"That only counts if the other one doesn't feel the same way!" Bucky growled, "If only you'd have told me..."
Sam spun around and grinned at Bucky cheekily, "What, Barnes? What would you have done?"
"I would have been able to do this," Bucky kissed your cheek, "A lot earlier."
You blushed, turning your head to look at Bucky. You knew Bucky's eyes, what they looked like, everything that they had seen, but in that moment you saw something you'd never seen in his eyes before— he could show that he loved you, and that made him happier than ever.
Another few hours had passed, and Bucky and Sam had both fallen asleep.
"I'm glad," Steve smiled genuinely.
"Any reason why?" You smiled involuntarily as Bucky let out a single snore.
"Two of my best friends are finally together; really happy. Don't think this is just me buttering you up so I can be best man at the wedding," Steve chuckled before turning around quickly to face you, "And there will be a wedding."
"I love Bucky, but I don't think I'm ready to get married just yet. You're getting a little bit carried away, Rogers."
"Maybe I am, but do I care? No."
"Why are you talking about a wedding?" Bucky said sleepily, slowly waking up from his nap.
"You guys are getting married, right?" Steve smirked as he looked into the mirror to look at Bucky.
"Of course," Bucky smiled lopsidedly, "Not right now, but I'm not going to waste my time anymore."
"Aww that's so sweet," Sam woke, teasing Bucky.
"Shut your beak," Bucky retorted.
"Shut your trap."
"So funny. Trap— because I've got a metal arm, right? Hilarious," Bucky said sarcastically.
"Guys," Steve started, "That's enough."
"Nope," Sam disobeyed Steve, pushing his chair all the way back, squishing Bucky underneath.
"Bucky!" You called, before making a gesture to your arm and the light, prompting Bucky to tilt his arm in the perfect angle to shine the reflection of his metal arm in Sam's eyes.
"Ow! What the hell, Barnes!?"
You laughed, watching as Sam moved his seat back up in its original position.
"Good idea, doll," Bucky smirked, calling you by the pet name he usually used on you.
"Thanks, Buckaroo."
"When we get out of this car I'm gonna-" Sam started before being cut off by Bucky.
"What? Poo on my head? Pigeon, that's not nice."
"Oh my god," you laughed.
"Enough!" Steve shouted. Knowing he meant business, everyone promptly stopped talking, "Enough."
You and Bucky turned to look at each other, trying to keep a straight face before bursting out into laughter just as Steve pulled up at another gas station.
As the car came to a stop in front of a pump, Steve looked at the two of you via the mirror, a small smile forming on his lips, "I swear I'm going to leave the three of you here."
