You Missed (Bucky X Reader)
You pinch your eyes and tuck your shoulders up to your ears. The cold wind beats against your face as the two of you rush to the entrance. He hastily grabs the door and pulls it open, saying something to you as you rush in.
"What?" You ask as James enters behind you. Instantly, cigarette smoke fills your nose. Sounds of laughter are breaking through the blaring music.
"I was telling you to hurry up. I was freezing my ass off out there." He says as he stomps the snow off of his boots on the mat.
"What ass?" You tease with a smile as he unzips his jacket. He mocks your comment as you remove your jacket and scarf.
"Even though that comment was rude, I'm still going to hang up your jacket for you." He says, acting hurt.
"And that's what caught my eye. Your sweet personality." You say, handing them to him.
"Nice save." He chuckles as he hangs them up. He loops his arm over your shoulder, leading you farther into the building. You had to admit, even though it was absolutely freezing outside, it was a bit toasty in here.
"So, I can't remember, why are we here tonight?" You ask as you glance around. It was clear the place was a bar. The smoke was lingering in the air and there were plenty of alcoholic drinks being served.
"You don't remember because I never told you." He says as you near a table that eagerly waves at him.
"Because?" You trail, slightly confused. You assume they're James's friends since you don't recognize them. He has mentioned before wanting you to meet them. You just wish he would have given you a heads up.
"Because where's the fun in that?" He smirks just before you reach the table.
"Finally, you show up. We've been waiting for ages." A man says, standing up and slapping James's shoulder.
"Well, we didn't wanna slip on the ice. Couldn't risk a run to the emergency room with the stocks taking a dive like this." He jokes as his arm wraps around your waist.
"Yeah, because this is the lowest we've ever seen." The man chuckles, placing his hands on his hips. He glances over at you and, for some reason, he seems familiar. "Ah, so you must be (Y/N)."
You glance up at James, unsure what to exactly say. You don't know who this could possibly be and you feel uncomfortable. It feels almost rude that you can't come up with a name to save your life.
"Wow, you didn't even tell her about me. I'm hurt." He says, placing his hand on his heart as the rest of the group is laughing at the table.
"(Y/N), this is the annoying punk who can't seem to leave me alone. Steve." He says, making Steve plaster on a wide grin for James.
"Oh, you mean the kid you used to scrap out of the alleys." You lightly laugh, holding out your hand to him. You've heard plenty of stories about him. You just now had a face for the owner. "It's nice to finally meet you. I'm sure you can tell me some great stories about James that will embarrass the shit out of him."
"Oh, I have plenty." Steve nods with a wide grin.
"And I have just enough about you that'll make you keep your mouth shut," James says as he pulls out a chair for you and has you sit down. Steve immediately shuts up, heading back to his seat.
"I thought you were lying about having a girl, Barnes." Another man at the table pipes up, glaring at James. He holds out his hand to you. "I'm Sam and I can't believe you're actually with this moron."
"Well, James can be quite a handful." You smirk, giving him a sideways glance.
"There it is again!" A woman laughs, slapping her hand on the table. She elbows Steve, making him slightly spill his drink onto the table. "How adorable." She smiles, wiping away a fake tear.
You immediately feel offended. You glance over at James then back at the redheaded woman. "I'm sorry. Did I do something wrong?" You ask with an uncomfortable laugh.
"It wasn't what you did. It was what you said." Sam says.
"What did I say?" You ask, looking around the table.
"The last time I heard someone call him James, he was getting scolded by his mother with a spoon being wacked over his head." Steve laughs, shaking his head. "This jerk has only been known as Bucky since he dragged me out of that diner."
"Bucky?" You smile, turning to face him. "And this is because you were ornery as a child or?"
"James Buchanan Barnes. From the Buchanan." The woman pipes up, catching your attention. "Who the fuck gets named after a president?"
"Hey, now. Don't go too hard on the guy, Nat. It's not his fault he didn't get any of the better options to be named after." Sam says, making her shrug her shoulder with a soft smile.
"I'm just saying. How many people are even named after presidents?" She asks.
"What do you mean? Do you know how many Reagans and Kennedys are in my niece's class? Those are kids named after presidents." Sam fires back.
"Yeah, but are they named Ronald Reagan or John Kennedy? No. His mother literally took a president's name and gave it to him." She argues, gesturing to James.
"She wanted me to grow up to be somebody important." He smiles, wrapping his arm around the back of your chair and pulling you close to him. "I would like to say that I have accomplished that."
"By giving D.C. a huge scare?" Steve asks as he brings his drink to his lips with a smirk.
James taps the leg of Steve's chair, making him spill his drink more. The others immediately laugh as he fusses over the mess that they were making.
While they are distracted, James leans his lips to your ear. "Don't listen to these idiots. They have no clue what they're talking about." He smiles.
You have been dating James for almost a year now. He's told you plenty of things about himself, like the general knowledge of his past. It came up pretty early in the relationship, considering the metal arm was kinda hard to hide.
You had immediately told him that you didn't care. You had a past you weren't too proud of yourself and could relate to him to an extent. I mean, you weren't exactly a super solider and you weren't born in the early 1900s, but you had things you weren't too eager to share.
"Well, they told me your nickname. I think they deserve a little credit." You giggle as he shakes his head.
"I told you, once you heard it, you'd never be able to look at me the same. Now I'm just gonna be Bucky to you, huh?" He teases, making you chuckle.
"No, you'll always be my James. To everyone else, you can be Bucky." You reply before you kiss his cheek.
"You missed." He smiles, kissing your lips.
"Damn, really?" Sam exclaims, making you roll your eyes with a smile.
"I'm trying to enjoy my evening here. I didn't pay to watch you two get it on." Nat joins in before she pretends to gag.
"Better look away, I'm gonna do it again," James warns as he presses his lips against yours. You kiss longer, listening to them whine and shout in horror.
James's chair suddenly scoots out from underneath him, making him fall onto you. The others scream louder in horror at the now more intimate scene. "What the hell, Steve?!" Sam shouts.
"I didn't know it'd make it worse! It was supposed to be payback for knocking my drink!"
"Wonderful job, Steven. Very proud." Natasha says sarcasm laid thick as she gives him a few small claps.
"Okay, okay. We get it." Steve groans, making James laugh as he pulls away from you.
"Still the same stupid punk." James grins, tussling Steve's hair. He grabs his chair and sits beside you again. "We have to be careful with Stevie. He's a little clumsy but tries his best at everything he does." James says to you, making Steve blush and shake his head.
"Shut up."
"Aw. Is Steve embarrassed?" Natasha pouts, gently touching his hand, only making him more fumbled.
"Seriously, man. We gotta work on your cool." Sam says, shaking his head in shame.
"Aw, leave him alone." You say, getting everyone's attention. "It's not his fault that he isn't very coordinated." You tease with a smile, earning laughs around the table.
"You think he's uncoordinated now? You should have seen him testing out his shield back in the day," James says, making everyone's eyes widen and look at Steve in excitement. "You wouldn't believe how many times this kid hit himself in the face when he was tossing that disc around."
Steve mockingly laughs. He stops, a smirk appearing on his face. "Hey, Buck, I think they're playing your song."
"What?" Sam asks.
"I think Steve's right. Why don't you get up and sing along? I know you know all of the words." Natasha joins in, kicking James's shin under the table. "This is a karaoke bar after all."
He lets out a soft groan, rubbing where she hit him. "Just for that, I won't be moving anytime soon."
"Aw, come on, man. Not even to get your lady a drink?" Sam smiles, looking over at you.
You really want to see him sing so you plaster on an innocent smile. "Please, James. I really am thirsty."
"You can wait 'till this song is over." He immediately responds.
"No, I can't. My throat is so dry." You exaggerate, touching your neck.
"Why don't you join him, (Y/N)?" Steve asks as he sets his drink on the table.
"What a great idea! Let's get the two lovebirds up on stage and sing. It'll be great." Natasha beams, pure evil lurking in her eyes.
"Oh, no. I don't sing." You reply with a soft smile.
"You do now," James says, grabbing your hand and making you stand. You're about to protest, but he quickly drags you away. You can hear the other three cheering you two on as he leads up onto the stage.
James places the microphone into your shaking hand. You don't even know what song he picked for the two of you to sing. You can't even hear the music over the pounding in your ears. You watch the words slowly trickle down the screen and you're frozen. You can hardly even breathe.
"Come on, (Y/N)." James encourages into your ear, getting your attention. "Just look at me." He says, his hand grabbing your free one. You watch him starting belting out the song, a smile wide on his face as he completely murdered the song.
Loud cheers gather your attention back at the crowd. You quickly spot Steve, Natasha, and Sam singing along. They're making complete fools of themselves, making you laugh. James gives you hand a squeeze as you bring the microphone to your lips and begin to sing along.
You begin to feel your throat loosening up. You can finally breathe easy as the song goes on. Soon, you and James are dancing with each other and basically screaming at the top of your lungs in excitement.
Almost too soon, the song ends. The two of you are panting, grinning at each other. "Wanna do another?" James asks, ignoring the other three who were shouting unintelligible things at you two.
"Yeah. Let's do another." You smile, brushing your hair out of your face. "I'm having so much fun." You chuckle.
"What song do you wanna hear?" James asks the crowd.
"I Want It That Way!" Sam shouts out.
"Anything but that one!" James fires back, getting a few laughs in the crowd. Eventually, someone shouts out a song that you don't recognize, but you don't care. You and James still loudly sing it out, though both of you know that you're completely ruining the song.
When you finish, the two of you head back to the table. Two drinks are sitting in your spots. You glance around the table, searching for who paid for them as you take your seat.
"Stevie, you shouldn't have." James teases, answering your question.
"Well, I figured the two of you needed them after all that yelling." He teases. "Which, by the way, amazing performance. I think my ears only bled twice."
"Oh, you think you can do better?" You ask, getting a few gasps at the table.
"You heard the woman. Think you can beat us?" James joins in, making Steve shrug his shoulders in response.
"Now this I'd like to see." Sam grins. "Go on up there and sing your little heart out, Steve."
"No. I can't. I don't wanna steal the spotlight." He replies, shaking his head and holding his hands up in defense.
"Oh, for fuck's sake. Let's go, Rogers." Natasha says, grabbing his hand and dragging him up to the stage.
You lean over to James. "Are they--"
"Not that I know of," James responds. You awe, nodding your head. "But if they are, Steve is totally whipped."
"You said it." Sam nodded, watching them. "She'd definitely wear the pants in the relationship."
The three of you watch as Natasha picks a song, Steve looking over her shoulder and clearly disagreeing with it. He tosses back his head in annoyment as she obviously wins out.
You make a whipping noise and pretend to crack a whip. Sam and James both look at you and chuckle. "That's a good one." Sam grins before looking back at the two on stage.
A cheesy love song starts playing and James and Sam immediately let out loud whoops. Steve's face turns a deep red as he reads the words on the screen.
"Sing, Steven!" James scolds, cupping his hands over his mouth.
He looks up, glaring out him. As he's sulking on stage, Natasha bumps her shoulder against him, trying to perk him up. A smile briefly flashes on his face before he looks back at the screen.
Sam looks over at you and James. "If either of you suggest me getting on stage and singing, I will kill you." He says as the other two belt on in the background.
"Please, as if. I was literally invisible to the government for decades. I could hide from you easily." James scoffs.
"Who said I wouldn't just kill you in the parking lot? A few good punches and you'd be out like a light. Besides, I'm still not over you ripping out the steering wheel of my car." Sam says.
"Let's call it even." You pipe up. "You forgive James for taking out your steering wheel and we'll side with you when Steve and Nat try to force you on stage." You offer, grabbing James's hand.
Sam and James glance at each other, speaking with only their eyes. "Deal." They agree together.
James looks down at his, his blue eyes nearly sparkling. "God, how'd I end up with such a genius?" He asks before bringing his lips to yours.
You close you eyes and cup his cheek, deepening the kiss. The two of you ignore Sam's gagging and Steve's horrible off-pitch singing. You can only focus on each other.
You pull apart, slightly panting. "Wanna make out when Steve and Nat get back, James?" You ask, a smirk playing on your lips.
"Hell yeah." He chuckles.
"I'm going to the bathroom then so I don't have to watch that again." Sam exclaims, rising from his seat. "You two need to get a room." He says before storming off.
You and James laugh, cuddling into each other. This is only the beginning of a long, memorable night.
