Alternative Timeline (Short Story)
"How much longer?" Tony whines from the back seat.
"Only a few minutes, darling." Maria says, looking over her shoulder at him. He lets out a long sigh, rolling his brown eyes and looking out the window.
"Are you excited, son?" Howard asks, looking at him through the rearview mirror.
"I guess." Tony shrugs.
Maria glances at Howard then back at their son. "I'm sure you'll have a grand time. There's nothing for you to worry about."
"The only thing I'm worried about is being bored." Tony says, furrowing his eyebrows. "There's nothing for me to do over there. I'd rather be at home and working on some invention."
Maria lightly chuckles as they pull into the driveway. Her Tony was just like his father. They'd both rather be in a stuffy lab than anywhere else in the world. Well, when Howard was younger he didn't mind socializing with others. She knows Tony will be the same once he gets older. But right now, this seems like a punishment to him.
"We're here." Howard says. The group of them exit the car. Maria walks to the front door with Tony trailing behind her as Howard retrieves his suitcase from the back.
"Would you like to ring the doorbell?" Maria asks. A gentle smile forms on his face as Tony reaches out and presses the button twice. The door opens, making Tony slightly frown. He was kind of hoping they weren't home.
"Hello! It's so nice to see you again!"
"Hello, Steve." Maria says, pulling him in for a hug.
"Hey, champ." Steve smiles, looking at Tony. "Ready to spend the weekend in Brooklyn?"
"I don't really get much of a choice." Tony grumbles, making them laugh.
"He's very excited. Just tired from the car ride." Maria says, running her fingers through his hair.
"It is a long journey." He nods as Peggy joins him at the front door.
"Hello, Maria." She smiles, hugging her. "Hello, Anthony." She smiles, bending down and waving at him. "I'm so glad you get to spend the weekend with us."
"Me too." He sighs, knowing it better to lie than hurt their feelings. After all, if he got to pick who to stay with, it would be with Steve and Peggy. They're practically family. Better to be with them than some strange sitter.
"Where's Howard?" Steve asks, resting his arm on the doorframe.
"He's just grabbing Tony's bag." Maria says as he appears behind her. "Here he is."
"Good to see you two again." He smiles, shaking both of their hands.
"Well, would the two of you like to come in for a cup of coffee? I just put a pot on." Peggy says, gesturing for them to enter.
"We'd love to stay and chat, but we really must be going." Maria says. "We're running behind as it is."
"Alright." Peggy softly sighs. "Well, don't worry about Anthony. He's in good hands."
"We know. And we're very grateful for the two of you to help us out on short notice." Howard says.
"It's the least we can do after everything you've done for us. Besides, we enjoy having Tony around." Steve says, softly smiling down at him.
"Well, we best say our goodbyes then." Maria says. She bends down, gently kissing Tony's cheek. "Goodbye, Tony. Behave for Steve and Peggy."
"I will."
"Goodbye, son. Don't give them too many problems." Howard adds.
"I won't."
And on that note, the two of them leave. The group watches their car pull out of the driveway and roll off into the distance. Peggy lets out a sigh and grabs Tony's suitcase. "Shall we head inside? We can find a snack."
"I'm not hungry." Tony says as he follows them into the small house.
"Are you sure? We have blueberries." Steve says as they enter the kitchen. Tony, not wanting to seem too interested, shrugs his shoulders and sits at the table.
"I guess I'll have a few. I'll make sure they taste good." He says, making Steve chuckle.
As Steve closes the refrigerator door, a cry fills the air. Tony perks up, leaning in his chair to look down the hallway.
"Steve, would you get the baby? I'm going to unpack Tony's bag for him." Peggy calls down the hallway.
He sighs and sets the blueberries in front of Tony. "One minute, you're the world's greatest super hero. The next, you're changing a baby's diaper." He teases as he walks down the hallway.
Letting his curiosity get the better of him, Tony pushes his chair away from the table and follows Steve to the nursery. He grabs the bars of the crib, rising to his tippy toes to peek inside.
A red faced baby is screaming its head off, making Tony cover his ears in frustration. Steve picks it up, gently holding it in his arms. Almost immediately, the crying subdues and it's quiet again.
"I didn't know you were also babysitting a baby this weekend." Tony scowls. Steve laughs kneeling down beside him.
"We're not babysitting her. This is our baby." He says, showing her off to him. Tony furrows his eyebrows, studying the blue eyed baby. "Tony, this is Rebecca."
"Hi, Rebecca." He says, reaching out to her.
She grabs his finger, holding it tightly. "We also call her Becky. If you want to call her that."
Tony giggles as she takes his finger and tries to place it into her mouth. "She's trying to eat me."
Steve chuckles, watching the scene. "Must be hungry. Wanna help me feed her?"
Tony's brown eyes light up. "Can I really?"
"Of course. Let's head back to the kitchen." Steve says, rising to his feet. Becky babbles in his arms as Tony eagerly follows behind them. He watches with awe as Steve mixes a bottle together.
"What is that? It looks terrible." Tony says as he points to the can of formula.
"Well, it's filled with stuff to help Becky grow big and strong like you. They mix it into milk to make it easy for her to eat since she doesn't have very many teeth." He explains as he pops the top onto the bottle.
"I'm sorry that you have to drink that." Tony says as they enter the living room. Steve has him sit down on a chair and he props a pillow under his arm.
"Be careful, she likes to wiggle. You think you can handle it?" Steve asks as he begins to transfer Becky into Tony's arms.
"I can handle it." Tony nods, excited that he gets to have such a big job. She wiggles and settles in his arms.
Steve coaxes her into taking the bottle then has Tony hold it. He lets go, watching Tony with her. Eagerly, she begins to drink. "Wow, I'm so proud of you. You're a natural at this, Tony." Steve smiles.
"She's drinking it so fast." He laughs.
"She's never this good for me. Maybe we should hire you to feed her all the time." Steve teases as he runs his hand over her dark hair.
"You couldn't afford me." Tony says.

"Anthony, are you ready?" Peggy asks, peeking her head into his room.
"Do we have to go to the park?" Tony asks, slightly frowning.
"There's plenty of things to do there. They have some new swings and a slide." She says, entering his room. He shrugs his shoulders, looking down at the floor again. "Anthony, why don't you want to go?"
"Well, who am I going to play with?" He asks. "I don't have any friends in Brooklyn and you and Steve are too big to be playing games with me."
"Who told you that?" Peggy asks, brushing his dark hair from his face.
"Mom and Dad don't like playing games like that with me."
"Well, I'm sure if you ask Steve very nicely, he'd love to play with you." She smiles.
"Yeah, right. Captain America going on a swing? Unlikely." He scoffs, rolling his eyes.
"No, really. Steve always complains that no one will play with him." Peggy says, catching Tony's attention. "No one wants to race him and he always feels so sad. You'd really make his day if you ask him."
"Really?" Tony asks, a smile growing on his face.
"Honestly."
Tony is quiet, swinging his legs as he thinks it through. "Will Becky come?"

"Tony, would you like to push the carriage?" Steve asks. Tony perks up, running to his side.
"Yes!" He cheers, grabbing the handle from Steve's hands. He looks into the carriage, gently touching her cheek. "Hi, Becky."
She babbles, looking around.
"I think she just said hello to you." Steve says as he wraps his arm around Peggy.
Tony looks over his shoulder. "How do you know?"
"I can speak baby."
"No, you can't." Tony laughs.
"Didn't you know that's one of Captain America's skills? He can speak baby." Steve plays along, making Tony shake his head.
"Captain America can't speak baby. That would be so useless. Why would ever need to speak baby when he's on missions?"
"I don't know. Might be useful in the future."
"You're weird." Tony chuckles. Slowly, the group of them strolls down the sidewalk, Peggy and Steve are greeting people as they go. It's a beautiful Saturday to spend outdoors. "Steve?"
"Yes, Tony?"
"Would you play with me at the park?"
Steve looks at Peggy as he stumbles over his words. She nods her head, giving him a deadly glare. "Sure, champ. Sounds like fun."
"Good. 'Cause Peggy told me you would if I asked nicely."
"Of course she did." Steve softly sighs, giving her a smile.

"Oh, man. How did you get so fast?" Steve asks, pretending to pant as he chases Tony around the park. Peggy happily watches from a bench, holding Becky in her lap.
"I don't know. I just am." Tony laughs, running away from him.
Steve lets out a loud sigh and dramatically falls onto his back. "Kid, I'm beat. I can't catch you."
"Oh, come on, Steve." Tony says, walking back to him. He reaches out, grabbing Steve's hands.
"Too tired. Can't keep going." Steve groans.
Tony grunts, trying to pull him to his feet. "I know you're faking it, Steve. Captain America would never get this tired."
"I'm retired. Haven't worked out in years."
"Peggy told me you were working out this morning." Tony says, looking down at him.
"She's always one step ahead of me." Steve sighs. Just as Tony was beginning to give up, Steve reaches out and tackles him to the ground. "Gotcha!"
"Steve! No fair! You tricked me!" Tony laughs as he squirms in Steve's grip.
"You fell right into my trap."
Tony reaches out. "Help me, Peggy! I'm stuck!"
Peggy shakes her head, placing Becky into her carriage. "Oh, Anthony. I can't be saving you every time Steve tricks you." She says, walking over to him.
She grabs his hands, pulling on him. "I'm stuck!" Tony grins as Steve holds onto his waist.
"You'll never take him away. Never!" Steve laughs, holding tight.
"Tony, tell him you'll give him ice cream." Peggy smiles, playing along.
"What? Why?" Tony asks.
"It's his biggest weakness. He'll do anything for it." She says, pretending to pull as hard as she can on him.
Tony flips around, looking Steve. "I'll give you some ice cream." He says.
"Ice cream?" Steve asks, loosening his grip slightly.
"Yes. Any kind you want. All you have to do is get your beefy arms off me and let me go." Tony offers as Peggy continues to pretend to struggle to free him.
"Okay." Steve smirks, letting him go. Tony flys through the air, crashing into Peggy on the way down.
Peggy groans as Tony sits on her lap. "We did it!" He cheers.
"Yes. And we got some bruises to remember it." She says, rubbing her arm.
Steve walks over, holding out his hand to her. "I believe I was promised ice cream."

"Do I have to go?" Tony asks, looking up at Maria.
"I know you had fun, but we need to go back." She says. Tony sighs, grabbing his suitcase. "What do you say?"
"Thank you for letting me stay with you." He says, looking at the ground.
"You are welcome back anytime, Anthony." Peggy smiles, running her hand through his dark hair. She gently kisses his cheek and hugs him. "We'll see you soon, okay?"
"Okay."
"See ya, champ." Steve says, hugging him as well.
Tony looks up. "If I give you some ice cream, can I stay longer?" He whispers.
"Sorry, Tony. But your dad really wants you home. If I had the choice, I'd let you stay forever." He whispers back. Tony nods his head and hugs him one last time.
Becky babbles as she's handed back to Steve from Maria.
"What she say?" Tony asks as he looks up at the baby.
"She says that she'll miss you and can't wait for you to come over and play again." Steve says.
"I'll miss her too." Tony giggles. He waves his hand. "Bye, Becky."
"Bye, Tony." Steve says, waving her hand.
Once all the goodbye were given, the Stark family headed back their car. They drove back home with Tony telling them all about his weekend with the Rogers. He couldn't wait to go back and play with Becky and Steve and have Peggy tuck him in bed. As much as he didn't want to go before, he didn't ever want to leave now.
