Engagement (Tony Stark)

Today's Quote: "You're all I have too, you know."    -Pepper Potts

Where the hell is he? He tells me about this 'huge' announcement about a new Avenger, and when I'm here in front of ALL THESE people, nothing happens. Ugh, that man.

"I'll be right back Phil," Pepper said to Coulson annoyingly, tapping him on the shoulder as she exited through the doors.

She walked out to find Tony and Happy standing next to another suit. "Where's the kid?"

"He left," Hap said to Pepper, half upset.

"Everybody's waiting," demanded Pepper, throwing her arms out.

"You know what, he actually made a really mature choice? Just surprised the heck out of us," Stark started, gesturing to him and Hap.

Pepper mentally rolled her eyes. "Did you guys screw this up?" she sighed annoyingly.

"He told the kid to go wait in the car," Stark snapped back quickly, trying to cover himself.

"Are you kidding me? I have a room full of people in there waiting for some big announcement! What am I going to tell them?" she started angrily, walking to Tony.

"Think of something," Tony replied, before staring off in thought. "How about umm . . ." he then quickly shot a glance at Happy. "Hap, you still got that ring?"

"Do I . . . um,"

"The engagement ring-"

"Are you kidding?" Happy reached into the pocket inside of his suit. "I've been carrying this since 2008." Pepper stood silently shocked, at Happy and Tony. An engagement ring? Really Tony? Hap held it up for them to see.

Pepper shot him a confused glance while Tony stared blankly back at his friend, before saying half-hardheartedly with a sigh, "ok."

Without thinking, Pepper blurted. "I think I can think of something better than that." She turned to face Tony, as he did the same.

"Well it would buy us a little time," he explained back.

Pepper leaned in, shutting her eyes as she kissed Tony for the first time in a while. She smiled into his lips as he did the same to her, enjoying the moment.

Hap called out, "Like we need time." Pepper held the kiss for a few more seconds before backing away and turning to the door.

"I can't believe you have that thing in your pocket," she muttered just loud enough for them to hear as she walked back to the room.

Tony called behind her as she flung the door open. "Can I get the door for you, hon?"

"I got it," she called fiercely back as she walked back into the noisy room, Tony at her heels.

As usual, the room was filled to maximum capacity with people and reporters from all different newscasts. Everyone started screaming their names as they walked up to the front, begging for answers to questions about the 'big surprise.'

Pepper smiled. Sure, it hadn't gone as they had planned, and technically, Tony and Pepper hadn't even gotten back together, and yet here they were – engaged. If she was honest with herself, she was overjoyed that they were getting back together, more permanently this time.

And yet, she was absolutely shocked at the fact that Tony Stark proposed to her, mostly because she knew he had commitment issues, and she considered herself lucky early on to even be in a stable relationship with the billionaire. To even have Tony consider a marriage was an insane thought to her, but that thought was quickly filled with desires and dreams of what life with Tony would be like.

Pepper padded up to the desk, as cameras continued to flash away, and microphones continued to be shoved in their faces. She started shifting through the scripts she had planned earlier for Peter and Tony, but obviously that idea was scratched. She was not even close to being prepared for this, and she hated that feeling. She didn't like improvising, like Tony often did.

As she did this, Tony snaked his arms around her waist so he was directly behind her. She could feel his hot breath on the back of her neck, sending shivers down her spine. "You know," he started, mumbling quietly in her left ear. "I haven't even put the ring on yet."

Pepper turned her head so she that her face was towards him. He was gazing at all of the newscasters and reporters, not meeting her eyes. "Just wait and I'll give you the signal," she whispered back. "That's how we'll announce it to everyone." Pepper was well aware that a lot of people's eyes had turned to the couple up front, and she knew that they would want an explanation. Tony and Pepper's breakup was all over the news for at least a week, before the public had finally calmed down. However, that didn't even begin to explain the torture after that; not just from the breakup itself, but from all of their fans. Everyone was sending Pepper and Tony mail that they should get back together, and that they were 'born for each other,' and all that. Pepper had gotten so sick of it that she demanded that her and Tony's PO Box be temporarily shut down.

She hadn't realized that Tony had shifted in position so that he was now standing beside her. "No script . . ."

"Don't worry," she sighed. "I got this."

Pepper put her hands up to silence everyone, and slowly but surely they quieted down. Cameras still continued to flash out, nearly blinding Pepper. "So . . ." she started. "You all came here expecting a big surprise. And you can be sure to expect that." She smirked at Tony without averting her gaze from the crowd. She didn't need to look to know that he had smirked back. She found Tony's hand from behind the podium stand, and lifted it so that everyone could see. "Mr. Stark and I . . . are back together."

The crowd went nuts before Pepper could even get to the part on the engagement, which she knew would be even more hectic.

Questions were fired at them like bullets, and Pepper thought she might pass out.

"Miss Potts! What sparked this?"

"Is it truly official?!"

"Have there been any talks on the future?"

"When did you and Miss Potts get back together?"

"Mr. Stark, did you ever feel any regret towards ever breaking up with the CEO of Stark Industries?"

"Do you find it odd dating your boss, Miss Potts?"

Pepper opened and closed her mouth, unable to keep up. Finally Tony rolled his eyes and cupped his hand over his mouth and yelled as loud as he could, "SHUT THE HELL UP!" The room fell silent after, awaiting their next response.  Tony wiggled his eyebrows at Pepper, then said, "let my fiancé speak." He then proceeded to slip the ring onto Pepper's finger suddenly, surprising even herself.

For a moment the crowd was absolutely silent, their eyes all locked on the couple. Tony remained quiet, so Pepper took that as her cue, as she nervously went on. "Me and Tony have decided that our split up wasn't, um, well . . . needed. It was indeed a mistake, and we are now officially together, and now engaged."

The crowd turned back to their uproar, snapping pictures and fighting over each other to get to the front of the podium. "Let's let Fury handle this later," Tony whispered into her ear.

Pepper reluctantly nodded, but was still relieved that they were leaving all of the bright lights. Tony nodded over to Coulson who walked back up to the podium as the engaged couple left, going through over to the other side of the facility.

Almost as soon as they had gotten out of the room, Tony intertwined his fingers with hers, swinging their hands gently back and forth as they walk. "I love you dear," he said too romantically, making it sound like a joke.

"You hopeless romantic," Pepper laughed back, shaking her head. Tony smirked down at her with another wink.

"Damn right."

Pepper smiled again as they entered the elevator to the lounge. Tony went over to the kitchen and popped open a glass of red wine, pouring a good amount in each glass, before walking over to Pepper, who had taken a seat on the couch.

"Well," Tony started, lifting both glasses. "To us?"

"That sounded more like a question, Mr. Stark."

"Well, it wasn't meant to be, Mrs. Stark."

Pepper shot him a gaze that was both quizzical, and a warning. He smirked before correcting himself. "Excuse me, future Mrs. Stark." She returned another gaze with a satisfying smile.

But ten Pepper took both glasses from his hands, but before he could protest her lips were on his, pulling him in for a passionate kiss. When they pulled away, his eyes were still closed, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Never mind, then."

Pepper smiled warmly. "Well Mr. Stark, you have another meeting tomorrow, so you don't need to be drinking anymore this evening."

"Ah," Tony shot back, pointing a finger. "I don't need to, but I want to. Two totally different things." Oh here we go.

"Yes, I'm quite aware of that."

Tony sighed, pulling the glasses out of her hand and setting them on the coffee table. "Can't we just . . . cancel tomorrow's meeting? We literally just got engaged like, umm, what? Twenty minutes ago?"

Pepper sighed right back. "Well, yes. I suppose that's true. But surely you know that Fury can't fully cover our tracks, and the public will want answers, and I know I have several meetings tomorrow and Phil asked me about this other event back in Malibu that he wants us to attend, and then there's that other party we were throwing for Rhodey," she got faster and faster as she spoke, going into 'business' mode, as Tony called it.

"Pep," he warned carefully. "You're going all crazy-CEO hectic on me again." He rested his hands on her shoulders. "C'mon. Don't do this. We just got engaged, we should be out at a bar, or throwing a party or something."

Oh Tony . . . "Tony yes I know, believe me, I want that too, we just have too many things going on right now, and you're always so caught up with all of these parties, or you have your head stuck up in your lab . . ." she caught herself before she continued. Oops, wrong thing to say. He shot her a sideways glance, slowly letting his hands fall from their position on her shoulders.

"Yes, well . . . I guess I'll be off then . . . seeing as this clearly isn't that important to you as it is to me," he scoffed. Pepper internally rolled her eyes. This is what got them in trouble last time; they would argue so easily over stupid things (well, some of them were stupid, but those were usually Tony's arguments), and then regret it later and not apologize.

Tony got up to leave, putting his hands in his coat pockets like he always did when he tried to set a casual mood. It was true – Pepper didn't want to start off again on the wrong foot, but she also wouldn't let Tony overpower her like that. But at the same time, they were fighting over something so small, something so unreasonably small that it shouldn't have been an issue. Pepper realized that she was wrong anyway, and that Tony had simply just wanted to spend time with her. After all, it was their engagement. So yeah, it really was her fault this time.

She shot up and dashed over to tug on Stark's shoulder before he could walk into the elevator. "Wait," she demanded, pulling him to face her. "That was really stupid of me. It was so small, and I went into business mode again. Sorry about that." She looked to the side, before averting her gaze back to her fiancé. "I can spare to take the day off tomorrow, just make sure to give Jarvis and F.R.I.D.A.Y a good idea on what to do to cover for us."

"Jar, you got that?" Tony called out happily, as his arms went down Potts' body to rest at her hips. One thing that Pepper was good at with Tony: she was very good at making him forgive her. Pepper wrapped her arms sweetly around Stark, looking into his adoring eyes through his glasses. He started explaining plans to Jarvis, which came off as a surprise to Pepper, mostly because she hadn't expected him to know as much as he did about the upcoming events Pepper had planned for him.

Pepper laughed as she pulled his face closer to hers as he continued to talk with the AI, avoiding Pepper's gaze. When he had finally finished, he looked back down to Pepper. "Phew, I tell you. I am one crazy man. I must be really famous to-"

He couldn't finish before Pepper had pulled him all the way in so their lips met in a sweet kiss, one that Pepper rarely ever got out of Tony. Boy, had she missed this man.

"Mm," Tony mumbled trying to pull away. "Let's go out."

"Out where?" Pepper giggled, leaving her arms looped around his neck.

"Wherever you wish, my love," he smirked as the couple looped arms went back to the elevator.
