It was love at first sight for you and Steve. Even though he was physically small and weaker than others, he was always the first to stand up for the little guy (usually actually bigger than himself) and had the biggest heart of anyone you knew. No matter what he made you feel special and as though you were the most important woman in the whole world. Part of you was relieved that he couldn't join the army. It was selfish to be glad that due to his myriad of illnesses and conditions, he wouldn't get a chance to be in the front line. It had been his dream since the war begun to fight for his country, but you couldn't help but be happy that he would stay safe in New York with you rather than across the seas being shot at.

You may have appreciated the fact that he couldn't join the army, you were still supportive of his endeavours. It may have been fraud to keep applying in different cities, but you wanted him to be happy and if going to be turned down repeatedly made him feel like he was still trying to be a hero, then you were going to support him.

Steve had heard of another recruitment over an hour away and was heading off to apply again.

"Maybe tonight we could go dancing?" You suggested. "Either as a celebration to you got in, or that you get to put up with me for a bit longer?"

He offered you a warm smile as he looked up from his wallet that he was slipping into one of the pockets on his jacket.

"That sounds like a good idea," he nodded.

"I'll lay out something for you to change into and be ready for..." you paused looking down at your watch. "Say six?"

Steve took your hands in his, smiling fondly at you. It saddened him that he couldn't be the hero that he wanted to be, but he couldn't help but be grateful to get to spend more time with you before he could get badly injured or worse on the front line.

"That sounds like a perfect plan," he said, leaning in to press his lips to your cheek.

"Stay safe, dear," you said, buttoning his coat for him. "I will see you tonight and we can dance until dawn."

"I cannot wait."
