Grant isn't sure how this happen. One thing led to another and he's suddenly (Y/n) Starks partner. He wasn't sure why SHIELD was assigning them together, but he's heard only great things about her so he's not too disappointed.

When he meets her is almost awkward. (Y/n)'s nothing at all like her father, Grant notes. She's closed off and doesn't smile.

It's only on the their third mission together she starts opening up. She had cracked a joke about the loft they had rented, saying something about the bed looking like the previous owners had had one lucky night too many and Grant had just stood there, until he dropped their bags and laughed so hard a their neighbors had to come check on them.

That's when he learned that (Y/n) Stark has a horrible sense of humor, but he would always laugh at her jokes, no matter how silly they were.

After that, she became more than open about herself. She'd randomly tell him stories when they were on a stake out, informing him that because she's Tony Starks daughter, it's hard to find a trustworthy partner who won't sell her out or use her to get to her father.

"I'm not interested in you or your father, so you have no need to worry about that," He had told her, immediately realizing what he had said and apologized quickly.

Grant had expected her to get up and throw something at him, but she threw her head back and laughed. Another reminder of her horrible sense of humor.

It's on a mission when Grant realizes he's in love with her. She's shouting at Grant to grab her hand as he dangles from a pipeline above a nauseating to look at distance when he feels it. And when he's safely back at the hotel with (Y/n) curled at his side, he also realizes that he can't tell her.

She's 17, almost 18, but still underage and he curses angrily. That wakes her and she mumble what's wrong, but he tells her to go back to sleep, everything is fine.

It's months later at (Y/n)' 18th birthday party, her and Grant are alone on the balcony at the Towers. The music is so loud the whole structure is vibrating, but it's muffled as they talk quietly against the railings.

"I have to tell you something and I'm not sure how you'll react," Grant suddenly says, smiling nervously when she looks at him. "Truth be told, I'm terrified it'll be negative,"

She frown, steps closer and tilts her head. "You, Grant Ward, terrified? Of me? Earth shattering-"

"I'm in love with you,"

Her jaw drop as she stares at him, and he sweats anxiously when she suddenly starts laughing.

"Oh for Christ's sake.."

She's in mid giggle when Grant takes her wrist and pulls her closer, presses his lips against hers.

He doesn't remember (Y/n) being this good of a kisser. Sure, they've had to lock lips a few times on a mission to stay hidden, but nothing like this.

"Wow," he breaths once they're broken apart, grinning at her swollen lips and touches them lightly. "This is going to be hard to explain to everyone once we go inside,"
