He doesn't see the figure again until the night fury gets shot through the window. Steve leaves Bucky to watch after Fury, to call an ambulance, whatever he needs.

He had chased down the sniper, barley fast enough to keep up. He threw his shield, and the figure, who he registers now as a female, had caught it. No one is able to catch Steve's shield.

"She was fast," Steve had told Natasha as they watched doctors swarm around Fury's led filled body. "Strong. Had a metal arm."

He later finds out that she's called the Winter Soldier.

"She's a ghost," Natasha said, eyes flickering to Bucky and Steve. "Most of the intelligence community doesn't even believe she exits."

It's not until they're in the car with the director of SHIELD do they all come to terms with the Winter Soldier being a very, very real person.

"You okay?" Steve asks, barley dodges a bullet inches from his head as he crouches down behind a car with Bucky.

"Yeah," Bucky reloads his gun and peeks over the hood. "I'm going for her behind she gets to Natasha. You good with those guys?"

Steve nods. "Yeah. Be careful."

"Always am," Bucky leaps up and runs in the direction of where he had seen the Winter Solider head towards last, keeping his his eyes peeled for Natasha's read hair or the glinting metal arm.

The reveal knocks the breath out of Bucky's lungs.

"(Y/n)?"

The Winter Soldier, his more then best friend, (Y/n), narrows her eyes. "Who the hell is (Y/n)?"

Bucky can't move as she pulls out a gun, too shocked to even blink.

And then Sam comes flying in, kicks her hard and she lands yards away.

"(Y/n)!" Bucky shouts, and she turns and meets his eyes for a split second before the car next to her explodes.

Bucky finds Natasha leaning against a truck, grenade launcher in hand, looking shaken and pale.

When he looks back, (Y/n)'s no longer there and he's forced to his knees by Rumlow, Steve kneeling down next to him.

"It's okay," Steve says, makes a face when Romlow knees him in the backs. "We'll get out of this."

"She.." Bucky stares at the ground in shock, not realizing he's been moved into a van until a sharp jolt forces him back into reality.

"Bucky," Steve leans forward. "What's wrong? What happened?"

"It was (Y/n)," Bucky murmurs, clenching his hands. "She looked right at me and didn't even recognize me."

"What?" Steve flinches, looks at Bucky like he's crazy.

"She's alive," Bucky shuts his eyes to prevent himself from crying. "And she's working for HYDRA."
