⭐ How Could You | Steve Rogers
Endgame Steve Rogers
-
You could not believe what you were seeing. Hot tears boiled in your eyes as you watched what was unfolding before your eyes. Steve was gone for five seconds, and you were waiting for him.
But when he came back, you had never felt that pain before. It was as if your heart was ripped out of your chest when you saw him. Your Steve Rogers was back, but he wasn't yours. Not anymore.
He made a decision that would change his life forever.
He forgot that his decision was changing your life too. You and him shared a life together. How could he abandon you like this?
You stood there, watching as Sam and Bucky met him. You also saw the shield had his new owner. Everything that happened was so unexpected. Truth to be told, you were not happy with his decision at all.
"Y/N, are you alright?"
Sam asked, worried about you who froze in your spot since Steve came back. Bucky approached you, and his heart almost shattered when he looked at you.
"I'm sorry, Y/N."
Bucky apologised, even if there was nothing that he should be sorry about. You nodded weakly at them.
"He doesn't seem sorry at all."
You chuckled bitterly, referring to Steve who did not even give you a glance. Bucky patted your back softly, trying to comfort you.
"He wants to talk to you, Y/N."
That was it? You were his wife, for crying out loud! You were not just one of his friends. You were his love. You loved him with all of your heart.
How could he do this to you?
You were dejected and angry at him but nevertheless, you still sat beside him on the bench. You refused to look at him, and somehow you felt guilty for doing so.
It wasn't supposed to be like this.
You were fighting back tears when Steve took your hand in his, kissing your knuckles softly.
I love him very much. This shouldn't be happening. This isn't fair.
You were drowning in your own thoughts when he intertwined his fingers with yours. You looked at him, your lips quivered as you realised that he was not your Steve anymore.
"Y/N, please forgive me."
You shook your head violently, allowing yourself to cry. You pulled your hand out of his grasp and Steve sighed wistfully.
"Don't apologise when you do not mean it."
You spat, tears streamed down your face. You wanted to stay calm and collected, but how could you when your husband came back with a decision that ruined your life? He went through a life with another and did not even care about you.
He chose to have a life without you.
"I thought you loved me, Steve.."
Your voice cracked as you cried even harder. Tears pooled in his eyes when he realised that he was breaking your heart. He knew you would be upset with him, but he did not know that it would break you like this.
"I love you, Y/N. I'm still in love with you---"
"Stop lying to me, Steve!"
He was flabbergasted when you yelled at him. You never did that before. You were so gentle and loving with him. Steve let a tear rolled down his face when he knew that he lost you.
"I'm your wife. We had a life together. Steve, we created a life together! Or do you forget about him?"
You retorted, wiping your tears away. Steve's eyes grew wide and he shook his head. For a moment, you saw remorse in his eyes but you quickly looked away.
"He is our son, Y/N. How could I forget him?"
Steve said, his heart was wretched at your words. You fiddled with your fingers and took a deep breath to contain your feelings.
"Yes, Steve. We have a son. But you, you decided it was right for you to live another life with another family while we're still here. You don't even talk about this with me before---"
Your voice was caught in your throat as another sob escaped your lips. Steve wrapped his arms around you and he said nothing but let you cried into his chest.
He did what he thought was right. He knew he had you, he had a son but he did it anyway because it was right in his eyes. But right now, when you were crying your heart out in his arms, he did not know what to say.
"I'm really sorry, Y/N."
He whispered softly, kissing your head.
"Don't be. I couldn't give the life you wanted. I was wrong. You did the right thing."
He winced at how broken and vulnerable you sounded. You pulled away from him and looked him in the eyes. He looked older, but you recognised those eyes so well. You always found comfort in those pair of blue orbs.
"I can still be a part of your life, Y/N. You know that, right?"
"No, you can't."
You said sternly, there was no smile on your face. Steve did not want to regret his decision, but that was the only feeling that he had right now.
"What I'm gonna tell our son?"
You muttered under your breath, thinking how messed up the situation was. Steve wrapped an arm around your shoulder.
"Tell him that his father loves him."
Steve said, sadness was clear in his voice. There was a lump in your throat and you nodded weakly, a sad smile was painted on your face.
"It's better if I do not come to see him."
He added, fueling into your agony even more. You stood up from the bench and glanced for the last time at your husband, who was the one who brought a light into your life and now he took it away.
"It's okay, Steve. We'll be fine. Don't worry about us."
You gave him a smile to make him feel better about himself. Steve breathed sharply and curled his hands in fists. He believed in you. You would be fine with your son. But he could not help but let a pang of guilt hit him hard.
"I love you, Steve. I will always do."
You said, walking away from him, just like how he walked away from your life. A smile cracked on your lips when you saw your son. Bucky was holding him and waited for you. You looked around and noticed that they were not there.
"They left. They wanted to give you time alone. I--- I couldn't leave you in a situation like this. I know you need a friend."
Bucky said, trying to lift your spirits. You sighed and nodded. You smiled at your two-year-old son, who was grinning at you. The innocent boy had no idea what just happened to his family.
"Hey, honey. Daddy said he loves you."
You said, holding his tiny hand tightly. You wondered how you wanted to explain the situation to your child. But you knew that you would raise him up just fine. Perhaps his father was not there, but there were many people who loved him.
It was time to move on.
