Chapter 8
After a fantastic dinner we were back in our room, getting ready for bed. One big bed for us to share. I couldn't wait to actually have this much space just for the two of us. It was much bigger than the beds at the college, but this was also intended for two people. And those people were now us.
I jumped into the bed and pulled the big duvet up to my chin. "I want to live in this bed and never leave it."
Astral laughed and slid his shirt over his head. "They'll call you bed-boy."
I snorted and then sobered. "Hey Astral, do you ever..." I stopped.
"Do I ever what?" he asked as he ran his fingers through his hair, undoing the knots in it. It always got so tangled.
"Do you ever feel like it's weird when people call you a boy?"
He raised a brow at me. "Uh, no, can't say I do. Do you?"
I sat up and shrugged a shoulder. "I don't know."
He frowned and sat down on the bed. "Do you want me to stop?"
I shrugged again, with both shoulders this time. "I don't know."
He crawled into the bed properly and sat down in front of me. I crossed my legs so he wouldn't sit on them. He took both of my hands in his, looking down at them. One of my knuckles was completely miscoloured from when I had broken it as a child. His thumb ran over the knuckle very softly and then he looked back up at me.
"It doesn't really change anything, does it?" he asked with a low voice.
"I don't think it does. We're still friends. I'm still me."
He nodded and smiled. "Yeah. But do you wanna be a girl?" He cringed a little. He was not interested in girls whatsoever. He had made that abundantly clear many times.
"No," I snorted. "I just don't... Think I'm a boy either."
Astral leaned in and placed a soft kiss on my cheek, moving to my mouth, gracing it with another kiss. "Tell me when you know what you are."
I couldn't help but smile. "I will."
He kissed me again, deepening it this time. He hadn't put on a shirt and I revelled in getting to touch his skin. It was so soft.
I moved so I could lay down and Astral moved with me. He was so soft and careful with me. I felt as I was made glass in his hands. Especially when he slid my nightshirt off me and kissed his way down my chest, his hands very gently running over my ribs. His lips felt like silk on my skin as he moved further down. His fingers snuck under my undergarments, sliding down my thighs.
He kissed my thigh and grabbed me.
"Astral!" I exclaimed grabbing his hair. "What are you doing?"
"I said, I'd repay you. So, let me." He smiled wickedly and then took me in his mouth. I whimpered loudly and shoved my face into the pillow.
I thought his mouth was silk before, but that was nothing compared to this. It was mind-numbingly amazing, and feeling his head go up and down under my hand buried in his soft hair just made it better.
I couldn't think of a better way for him to repay me. I should do way more things that'd make him repay me.
I groaned and clenched my hand in his hair, stopping him from moving. He didn't stop though. He grabbed my wrist, getting my hand out of his hair, stepped out of the bed, went to the window and spat out of it.
He turned back towards me and smirked. "I take it we're even now?"
My bones had disappeared, and it was so much effort to turn my head and look back up at him. "If I say no, does that mean you'll do it again sometime?"
He chuckled and came back to the bed, crawling under the duvet with me. I more or less strapped myself to him and he chuckled, draping his arm around me.
"Do you... Want me to...?" I asked.
"No, that's not necessary. We need to sleep. Vision's coming at some point and I want some rest before it hits."
"I could do something after. To make you more comfortable."
"Now we're talking," he murmured very contently.
We had just gotten breakfast and were working over some notes when the girl from last night stopped by our table.
"So, I couldn't help but overhear that you have The Sight?" she said a little awkwardly.
Astral sighed very deeply. "No, I can't tell you your future. I see what I'm shown, and I don't choose-" he started but she interrupted him.
"No, I know all of that. My cousin has The Sight, but her dumbass mother thinks she's possessed. Please, if two mages from the big college told her otherwise, maybe she'd lay off on the exorcism. Please, I'll even pay." She put her hands on her hips.
I side-eyed Astral and he knew what that meant. He needed to be nice.
"Alright, we'll go see her. After we're done eating." He even grimaced a bit at her.
"I'm very sorry for his behaviour. I've tried training him but I'm afraid he's entirely feral." I sighed deeply and avoided looking at Astral, who probably looked offended then.
"I know the type. Thank you. For wanting to look into it at least. Please, educate my aunt." She folded her hands in front of her, actually begging us.
"We will," I promised.
She smiled widely and then almost pranced back to the counter.
"Are we really doing goodwill here?" Astral asked and leaned his cheek against his hand.
"Astral, this could be another person with The Sight. We could do more research here, and if it means we can help out a poor girl at the same time." I popped a piece of fried tomato in my mouth. "Then that's a good thing. We're doing a good thing for us and a good thing for this town as well."
He rolled his eyes at me. He'd always do that when I lectured him. I didn't think this was much of a lecture, but more like... Parenting. I needed to be the moral compass of this duo, apparently, since Astral had left his behind wherever he came from before he came to the college.
He never did tell me where he had been before the college. I had been there since I was a baby, and he knew that. But he had been about five or six years old. He had to remember his family. Many children were hauled off to the college and very few kept in contact with their families. It wasn't because the families didn't love their kids, but the kids went on to live completely different lives. Some had tried to get back with their families, but it was hard going back into normal society where not everyone knows magic, after you've lived in a place where everyone knows magic.
I'd be okay getting back with my family, I thought. If it wasn't for the fact that they were all dead. I had been found in the burnt rubble of my family home, still alive and crying. That was how they found out I had been cursed with immortality, while the rest of my family had died. I never did find out why I had been cursed or why my family had been killed. Someone had once said something about an angry mage or something, but I wasn't sure.
Astral though. He had never talked about his family, whether they were still alive or not. If they had kept in contact. I didn't think they did. He never got any letters. I didn't wanna ask because it had always seemed like a sore subject, whenever families were brought up. He'd get this very stony look, as if a wall just went up in front of him. He'd stop contributing to the conversation and just sit there with a distant look in his eyes. I didn't like that look, so I didn't ask him. If he wanted to talk about it, I was sure he'd bring it up himself. Besides, we talked about everything else. Maybe he had no need to talk about his family.
I was alright with that as long as he was.
