Chapter Twenty Nine
~Shota's POV~
I didn't understand Ellie's unease, the bus driver seemed pleasant enough and got us to the museum without issue. Perhaps her goofball of a husband blowing her secret had just set her on edge. While Ellie's class was a little rambunctious if they ever got out of line, she could silence them all with a single look. There weren't any major incidents at the museum. A few small incidents, Bakugo nearly got his head knocked off by Ellie for saying something smart, three of her students, one of which she referred to as Pond Scum, got their skulls knocked together when we got to an exhibit about All Might and they started making absurd kissy sounds at Ellie and Midnight nearly got thrown out a window by a gust of wind for saying something that made Ellie really red in the face that everyone else missed entirely.
We managed to make it back to the bus with zero fatalities, which I was a little surprised about due to Ellie's irritability. Hizashi joined me off to the side in the parking lot watching as Ellie snapped at various students for various things.
"She seems a little angrier than usual..." He commented.
I shrugged, "No one's died, so that's a plus."
Hizashi chuckled, "Think it's that time of the month?"
Midnight popped up behind us, "You should ask All Might, he'd know."
We both looked to her curiously.
"He has an app on his phone, it's darling really, so he knows when to bring her chocolates. Honestly, they're like the cutest couple on the planet." Midnight smiled, "Let's call him!"
"I really don't need to know about any of this." I groaned and stopped Midnight from calling him, "Lets just head back." My gaze drifted to Ellie watching the bus driver like a hawk as he opened the doors for the students to get back on the bus.
Her three problem students, Pond Scum, as she referred to him, and his two buddies approached her with gift shop bags in hand. This was not going to end well.
"Those kids have a death wish." Hizashi grimaced.
I watched as Ellie peeled her gaze away from the driver and looked up at her towering students, "What do you want?!" She growled.
"We got you presents." The largest boy with the rust colored hair guffawed and pulled a plush bear wearing an All Might costume out of his bag, "Since you're his biggest fan."
Ellie's cheeks reddened as his goons followed suit with more All Might plushies but surprisingly remained calm, "I have a present for you three in return." She said calmly.
"What's that?"
"When we get back to school, you each can give me 1000 laps around the track, and 500 push-ups."
The three boys laughed at this and I saw the faintest trace of a smile dance across Ellie's lips as she accepted the plushies before waving them away with a shake of her head.
We got the all clear to board the bus. Once the students were on board Ellie followed suit with a handful of All Might plushies and dropped into one of the seats at the front. I sat next to her as Vlad King got the students to sit down quietly in their seats before sitting in the seat across from us as Hizashi and Midnight sat directly behind us.
"You alright?" I asked Ellie curiously as she stared down the bus driver once more, though he didn't appear to notice her intense gaze.
"Just waiting for my, I told you so, moment." She grumbled under her breath.
"We got here fine, why do you think something is going to happen?" I asked her quietly as the bus driver took his seat.
"Because the way back is the perfect time to do it, everyone's distracted, their guard is down, they're tired, easy pickings." She shrugged, "Don't forget, senpai, I'm well versed on how villains operate, I used to be really good at it."
I frowned at this but I couldn't argue with her. The reason Ellie truly excelled at taking down villains was because she could think like them better than anyone else. No matter how sweet she could be, I knew she could be downright ruthless when the situation called for it. I'd seen first hand what she could do when those she cared about were at risk.
About an hour into the drive, everything seemed to be going fine, I let my guard down as we drove on an open road in the countryside with nothing around for miles save for farmland. Ellie was as tense as she'd been since we'd left, her body rigid, her hands clenched into fists, her knuckles white and her deep oceanic eyes frantically sweeping the road ahead for any sign of danger.
As I was about to tell her to give it up, I heard a sound up ahead as if the earth were splitting open. The ground rumbled unsteadily and the bus driver continued on not seeming the least bit alarmed by the sounds. A few students began to look about in a panic.
"Shit." Ellie breathed as the road ahead suddenly plummeted as a massive crater appeared. Her hair fluttered around her as she activated her quirk.
There were a few panicked screams on the bus as some of the students noticed the massive crater. Ellie cast her hands upward as the bus was about to fall into the giant pit.
"Hang on!" I called to the panicked students as the bus and the few other cars that had been on the road with us took to the sky to avoid falling into the pit.
Ellie was on her feet struggling to keep the giant bus and the cars afloat in her shrieking gale force winds. Her arms shook from the sheer effort it took to keep all the vehicles suspended. She managed to move them all and set them safely on the ground away from the crater.
"What the hell?" Hizashi gaped.
"Come on, Yamada, you and I will stop traffic to keep any cars from falling in." Vlad King noted before hopping off the bus.
"Ellie, that was amazing!" Midnight applauded, but Ellie was still on her feet ignoring everything around her. Her oceanic eyes were fixed on the driver. "I'm going to check on the civilians in the other cars." Midnight hopped off the bus.
"Is everyone alright?" The driver asked seeming concerned for the well-being of everyone. He made a move to get up and walk the aisle to check on his passengers, but Ellie flipped over my head and landed swiftly in the aisleway cutting him off.
"Ellie." I warned her, he hadn't done anything to warrant her getting physical.
"You should probably radio this in." She growled, "I'll handle the brats." She didn't turn her back on him just watched him go back to his seat and get on the radio. A frown crossed her face and she threw a look in my direction, "Call the police."
I moved just outside the door to make the call. Ellie seemed to think the driver wasn't going to radio it in though he appeared to be doing just that. I heard Ellie moving through the bus checking on the students as she went. After giving the information to the police I was a little surprised to hear they hadn't yet received a call about it. As I hung up the phone, my heart dropped into the pit of my stomach as I heard a few students scream on the bus.
I sprinted back onto the bus to see the driver holding Midoriya hostage with a gun to his head. Ellie was at the back of the bus checking on the students, she reacted quicker than lightning making a summoning gesture with her hand. Midoriya flew from the mans' grasp with a yelp and landed safely at Ellie's feet before a violent wind lashed out hurling the driver through the windshield.
"Shit!" I ran to apprehend him. Ellie was shouting orders from within the bus.
As I got my scarf around the driver to immobilize him, I saw all the students surprisingly following Ellie's orders. I brought the driver around the bus to find Ellie had evacuated all the students. A few seemed shaken and scared some looked on high alert ready for action. All of Ellie's students were calm and collected looking to her for direction. Not a single one of her students showed any fear. Their faith in her ability to keep them all safe, was astounding to see.
Her deep oceanic eyes flicked in my direction, "Senpai, I advise incapacitating him. Either kill him or knock him unconscious."
"Ellie, as a hero our goal is to avoid killing people." I sighed.
"That's where we differ, senpai, I'm not a hero, and I vote we kill him." Her tone was icy and cool but she was level headed and calm. It was unnerving.
The driver paled at this. He was already in pretty rough shape from his fly through the windshield there were small pieces of glass sticking out of him. There was a big gash in the back of his head that was bleeding profusely.
"We'll let the police deal with him." I noted before securely tying him up.
Ellie shook her head at this, "Well here's your first, I told you so, don't worry, I'm sure you'll be getting another one soon." Her gaze flicked to the bus driver, "Listen up asshole, you try and hurt any of these kids again, I won't hesitate to cave in your skull."
"Who knew, the wife of the Symbol of Peace could be so violent." The bus driver smirked.
So, word had spread through the criminal underground like we had suspected. Ellie clenched her fists but stood her ground, "You have no idea, lowlife. A word of advice though, my husband is the only person who can keep my rage in check, do you see him anywhere?"
The driver paled once more. "No."
"Then I suggest you tread carefully." Ellie hissed before slowly moving away to scan the perimeter, her body tense as she looked around.
I tasked some of my students with keeping an eye on the bus driver and went to her. "You're more irritable than norm-."
"Shut up." She didn't even look at me, "He wasn't working alone, idiot. I thought you were a pro."
I scanned the countryside with her, "How do you know?"
"The crater wasn't him and for the record I don't think you should leave him with the kids." Her deep oceanic eyes zeroed in on something within the crater, "We have company."
I followed her gaze, five people popped up from a small tunnel in the crater, looking momentarily confused when they saw the crater was empty before they looked up at us. Ellie prepared an assault as I heard a chorus of screams from behind me.
"What the-?"
The driver was on his feet, his bonds lying on the pavement appearing to still be tied. How the hell did he slip out? He had a knife and lunged for the closest student, it was Midoriya again. Ellie disappeared before I could blink. She used her quirk to get there in an instant before utilizing gentle winds to push the students out of harm's way.
"GET AWAY FROM THEM!" She shrieked as she grabbed the man by the side of the head and threw all of her weight into him, slamming his skull into the side of the bus with enough force the thick metal crunched inward. He'd tried to slice at her as she grabbed him and managed to get a pretty deep cut across her forearm, though she didn't seem phased in the slightest by the blood gushing from the wound.
I ran to meet them. We had to hurry, more villains were approaching. "All students get back, stay with the civilians." I pointed to the cluster of civilians with Midnight and Hizashi not too far back. The students reluctantly obeyed.
Ellie swiveled on me with a glare as she ripped off the bottom part of her long black tank top and tied it tightly around her arm to slow the blood flow, "Next time I say we kill someone, we should probably do that."
Hizashi, Midnight and Vlad King ran to join us as the five villains from within the crater surfaced. Midnight paled when she spotted the driver's corpse still being held up by his head from the indentation his skull had cracked into. She looked to the blood dripping off Ellie's arm and grimaced.
"Ellie, are you going to be okay?"
Ellie nodded before chancing a glance behind her at the students standing protectively in front of the civilians. She cast her uninjured hand out at them. A strong raging whirlwind swirled around the cluster of students and civilians creating a vortex of shrieking winds that threatened to topple everyone and everything outside of it. Inside it appeared perfectly calm, the eye of the storm. It was a massive tornado centered around one spot staying completely stationary creating a protective barrier that even bullets couldn't penetrate. She hurriedly sent a text message on her phone to one of her students warning them to watch the ground as that was the only way someone could get through.
"You're amazing, you know that?" I smiled, relaxing a little knowing the students would be safe.
"I'm aware and I owe you that second, I told you so." She said coolly.
"Stand down, villains!" Vlad King called out to the approaching villains.
"Sorry, we can't do that." The man in the center a tall man swathed in black wearing clunky black boots, tight black pants with rips and tears in them and a black leather jacket over his bare chest retorted with a wicked grin, "We heard a lot of students All Might cared about were going to be present, and come to find out his wife is here, this day couldn't get any better. We can't wait to watch him sob over all your corpses."
Ellie darted forward before any of us could stop her, "You idiots are the only ones that are going to be corpses." She hissed icily as she lunged.
"Ellie!" I panicked, and hurriedly activated my quirk targeting the leader not knowing who the hell could do what.
She wasn't even using her quirk to fight; her energy was being focused on keeping the kids safe. Hizashi, Vlad King, Midnight and I jumped into action darting after her. A strong wind pushed us all backward just as a series of spikes shot from the ground. They would have impaled us.
"You're just going to get in my way!" Ellie snapped, "STAY BACK!" She charged forward. One of the guys, a bigger guy lumbered toward her. Using her petite size, she slid across the ground between his legs delivering two powerful strikes to his knee caps as she slid through. She landed in a somersault catapulting herself to her feet as the giant of a man whose kneecaps she'd just shattered fell to the ground with a scream. "You fuckwits have a lot to learn. My husband is the number one hero in all the world, if you think you stand a chance against me, you're fucking delusional!" Two more cyclones tore down from the sky, the villains began to lose their calm demeanor as Ellie flew into a rage.
"Holy hell." Hizashi gaped, "I'm glad she's on our side now."
"We have to help her." Midnight pointed as more villains began to climb out of the crater.
I nodded and we all jumped into the fray. Ellie didn't have to look, somehow, she knew where we all were, I could feel it as I worked with the other heroes to try to apprehend as many villains as possible. There were subtle shifts in the winds sometimes they'd pull or push me, keeping me from harm as Ellie fought onward. In her years being alone on the streets, during her life of villainy, she'd grown strong, but once she found the person she loved most in this world, she'd become an unstoppable force, for him, to protect him and all that he stood for.
No matter how many villains we took down, more kept coming, as soon as I'd identify one with a troublesome quirk, they'd be attacked by hellish winds until they hit the ground unconscious. The raging cyclone protecting the students never wavered. I had no idea Ellie was this powerful, or that she had such control over her quirk to control several cyclones at once, use the wind to push and pull all the heroes out of the way of fatal attacks and focus on fighting the villains in hand to hand combat all while injured.
I could hear sirens in the distance barely reaching my ears above the violent screaming winds all around us. The few remaining villains still on their feet looked like they were going to panic. One withdrew a gun and pointed it at Midnight. They were getting desperate now.
"MIDNIGHT!" Ellie disappeared in a flash as the villain pulled the trigger. The sound of flesh being ripped apart met my ears and I stared in horror as I saw Ellie appear in front of Midnight. She'd taken a bullet to the back, to save the woman she seemed to despise.
"ELLIE!" Midnight screamed and struggled to catch her as she began to fall toward the ground.
Hizashi let out a yell that nearly incapacitated us all along with the villains as he saw Ellie collapse into Midnight's outstretched arms. All the villains were unconscious. Vlad King hurriedly started tying them up as the sirens got louder.
I ran to Midnight as she slipped to her knees clinging to Ellie's motionless form. My blood ran cold as I got closer and saw the amount of blood staining her shirt both front and back, the bullet had pierced through her back just under her right shoulder blade and had torn through her chest and was resting embedded in her skin just under her right clavicle. Midnight laid Ellie's head on her lap as tears welled in her eyes.
The raging cyclone was still in place protecting the students and civilians though her other cyclones had vanished the moment she got shot. I wasn't sure if she was fully conscious or not as I knelt next to Midnight to try and assess her condition. Her breathing was choppy and labored, her pulse racing from the amount of pain she was sure to be in.
Hizashi went to talk to the police the moment they arrived and help them apprehend the villains. We had to get the cyclone down. I lightly placed my hand to Ellie's forehead.
"Ellie, you need to drop the barrier around the students, everyone's safe." I called to her.
There was no reaction.
"I don't think she's conscious." Midnight sniffled and looked over her shoulder at the roaring cyclone. "I think she's maintaining it through sheer willpower."
I gently smoothed her dark navy tinged raven hair out of her face before erasing her quirk. The cyclone dropped. Midnight reluctantly allowed me to sweep Ellie's unconscious form into my arms and carry her to one of the awaiting ambulances. The students helped get the civilians to safety.
"Ellie!" The panicked voices of the students rang in my ears.
I looked down at her unconscious form, "If you're such a bad person, Ellie, why are there so many people upset to see you in this condition."
"Brain damage." Came her soft, nearly inaudible reply.
Relief swept over me as she slowly opened her deep oceanic eyes. "You're in pretty bad shape."
"Not the first time, and I doubt it will be the last." She shrugged but instantly regretted it as it irritated the wound. Her skin took on a somewhat greenish pallor, "Senpai, don't take this the wrong way but looking at you is making me want to vomit."
"Not sure what the right way to take that is." I rolled my eyes at her, if she was okay enough to be snarky, she wasn't in any life-threatening danger.
"Not kidding." She shoved me away and disappeared in a breeze, appearing a great distance away, off the side of the road in the grass before proceeding to vomit. Did she hit her head when she fell?
