Chapter Thirty One
~Ellie's POV~
Toshinori was happier than I had seen him for nearly as long as I could remember, he told everyone he saw that he was going to be a father. It was as sweet and endearing as it was obnoxious. He was like an excited child on Christmas Day but it made me smile to see him so filled with joy.
We went to the doctor for our first baby appointment, half the faculty tried to invite themselves, apparently our baby was the official UA baby and all the staff wanted to be involved. I managed to convince them all, violently, to stay out of it. The doctor informed us that, despite my still healing injuries, the baby was healthy and we were able to schedule our first ultrasound. Toshinori had some additional questions for the doctor, so I went out to one of the waiting rooms.
I spotted Midnight wearing a ridiculous trench coat, hiding behind a fake plant just outside my doctor's office. As I was about to yell at her, one of the children from the children's wing I often visited, spotted me on her walk around the floor with her mother. Her golden-brown eyes lit up.
"Ellie!" She squealed and ran to me.
I caught the child in my arms and offered her a bright smile despite the fact she was currently putting pressure on my healing wounds. "Hey little one. How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay, what are you doing here?" She asked me with a grin, "Did you bring more bunnies to visit?"
I laughed, "No, not today I'm sorry. I'm here to see my doctor."
"Oh no, is everything alright, Ellie?" The girl's mother asked worried as she jogged to catch up to us.
I blushed at this, "Ah, yeah, everything's great...I'm...um... having a baby."
"Ellie's going to be a mommy?!" The little girl squealed in delight and hugged me tighter.
"Congratulations, Ellie." Her mother smiled.
"Th-thanks." I responded somewhat shyly feeling nervous, they were the first people I got to share the news with.
"Ellie's going to be the best mommy...well besides my mommy that is." The little girl giggled as I tickled her sides.
"No arguments there, you do have the best mommy." I beamed.
"Come on, we should leave Ellie be for now." Her mother gave me a quick hug and took the child from my arms.
"Okay. Come visit soon, Ellie." She waved farewell as they returned to the children's ward.
"I will." I waved back with a smile until they disappeared from view before turning to the plant, "If you don't get out of there, I'm calling security and telling them you're a predator."
Midnight scurried out from behind the plant. "Well that's not very nice, Ellie-chan." She laughed nervously.
"What are you doing here?" I sighed.
"I was worried about you and wanted to make sure your appointment went okay..." She trailed off, her bright blue eyes turning downward, "I wouldn't forgive myself if something were wrong with the baby because you jumped in to save me."
"Well you can stop worrying, baby is fine, I'm fine and I made the decision to do what I did with confidence, not your fault." I shrugged.
"Why did you save me?" She asked me curiously.
"No matter how annoying you are, you're not the WORST..." I said simply. "And I might have been upset if you got hurt..." I looked away from her.
Midnight dove at me and caught me in a hug nearly knocking me off my feet, "Ellie! You're the cutest! You care about me!" She gushed.
"AH! Get off of me!" I attempted to shove her away but she stuck to me like glue.
"Does this mean we're friends?!" She squealed.
"I don't know, hentai freak, get off of me." I managed to wedge my uninjured arm between us and push her away from me. "I've never really had girl friends before, how does it work?" I frowned.
Midnight smiled, "You're doing fine, don't worry."
"I didn't think I was the problem, you're too clingy and noisy." I huffed.
"Since you're admitting we're friends now-." Midnight began.
"I'm not announcing it to anyone." I growled causing her to giggle.
"- this means we get to have girl talk."
"No girl talk." I grumbled.
"Some girl talk." She protested.
"None."
"Once a day."
"NEVER!"
"Fine, once a week."
"We're not haggling!"
"Twice a week!"
"You're not haggling right!" I snapped at her.
Midnight laughed at this, "I'll settle for weekend girl talk."
"You're impossible!" I groaned. "If it will make you shut up, fine!"
Midnight smiled. "I'm glad we're friends, Ellie. Thank you for saving me, even if it was a tactic, you'd scold anyone else for trying."
I rolled my eyes at her, "Honestly, you all freak out too much. I know my limits, I've been shot plenty of times, I avoided vitals, it was fine."
Midnight's eyes widened. "You really did think it through before you jumped in...that was like a split second, if that, it happened so fast."
"Life is a lot more difficult for a villain, just so you know. They don't just fight heroes, they fight other villains, vigilantes and sometimes the public, everyday is a fight for your life, you learn a few things."
Midnight grimaced, "I had no idea..."
The door to my doctor's office opened and Toshinori stepped out in his skeletal form and looked to Midnight curiously. She offered him a smile.
"I've finally made Ellie my friend."
Toshinori chuckled, "Well that's good to hear."
"Is it? That sounded really kidnappy." I frowned.
"Speaking of, first girl talk, my house, this weekend."
"I'm sorry...speaking of kidnappy and then you invite me to your place, yeah, I'm going to pass, thank you but no thank you." I glowered.
Toshinori laughed and placed his hand atop my head to keep me from running away. He knew me too well. It wasn't fair.
"Don't worry, Ellie, I'll let you go so you can be home in time for dinner." Midnight smiled innocently.
I looked to Toshinori for help, "None of this sounds alarming to you?!"
"I think you'll be alright." He bent forward and kissed me on the cheek.
"Reassuring." I rolled my eyes, my voice laced with sarcasm.
"I'll steal you, Saturday morning." Midnight winked.
Toshinori shook his head in silent laughter as I paled.
"Absolutely not! Nobody is stealing me and I have absolutely no desire to see the freaky sex dungeon you call home, no doubt it's filled with ALL the weird things!" My face was bright red.
Midnight clutched at her sides in laughter, "Oh, Ellie-chan, you're too cute, I can't take it." Once she was satisfied that I was fine, she took her leave after trying to glomp me with another hug which I swiftly avoided.
Toshinori chuckled as we walked along the sidewalk, exiting the hospital. "I'm glad, you're making friends." He smiled earnestly.
"Pretty sure I made a stalker, not a friend." I scoffed and let out a squeak as he lifted me to sit atop his shoulder so I wouldn't get lost in the crowd of people walking to and from the hospital. He turned down a street leading away from our apartment, "Where are we going?"
"You'll see." He smiled slyly.
"Toshinori, you know I don't like surprises." I whined.
"You'll like this one." He chuckled and I let out a squeal as he moved his shoulder so I'd topple into his outstretched arms. We stopped at a bus stop and I frowned.
"Yes, because I love public transportation, so much." I grumbled, "Just tell me where it is, I can poof us there."
"Where's the fun in that?" He laughed.
"I don't know, avoiding millions of germs can be pretty exciting."
"Ah...I didn't think about that." He frowned, "I could just change and take us-."
"You would cause a riot, there'd be people everywhere trying to get your autograph, my way is quieter."
"Alright. The beach young Midoriya cleaned up."
I looked to him curiously. "Why there?"
"Surprise." He reminded me with a smile.
I rolled my eyes and tightened my hold on him before creating a massive gust of wind to whisk us away. We landed safely on the beach startling a couple of teens that were building sand castles in the now clear sand. I looked around curiously, nothing seemed amiss. There weren't people hiding waiting to jump out at me, he knew better, that was a one way ticket to sending anyone involved to the hospital.
"Here?" I looked up at him in confusion.
He nodded and began walking along the beach.
"I'm confused."
He chuckled but said no more as he carried me toward the rocky bluffs to a small foot path that led up the steep cliffside.
"Are we cliff jumping?" I pondered causing him to laugh.
"No. I don't think that would be good for your healing wounds or the baby."
"The baby is the size of a sesame seed right now, I don't think it would bother it." I frowned. "Please don't start treating me like I'm going to shatter just because there is a parasite growing inside of me."
"Did you just call our baby a parasite?" Toshinori choked on a laugh.
"Well, it kind of is."
Toshinori chuckled, "I know better. Even if it's my first instinct to coddle you, I know I don't have to."
He looked almost saddened by this and I felt a twinge of guilt spark within me causing my stomach to twist into knots, "...you can coddle me if you want...just try to avoid doing it in front of people, if you can..." I caved.
He kissed the top of my head as we reached the top of the bluffs. He continued along the grassy surface atop the cliffside overlooking the ocean. There wasn't much up here, it was flat and grassy, there were a few trees a few paces back.
"Toshinori! Tell me what it is!" I whined.
"You'll see."
I sighed and waited impatiently in his arms. We rounded a bend and I spotted a house, tucked in the trees, overlooking the ocean. There was a real estate sign in the yard with a bright red 'sold' sticker on it. I held my breath to see if he'd keep walking but gasped as he stopped at the white picket fence.
"Surprise!"
"YOU BOUGHT A HOUSE?!"
Toshinori winced, "I thought you'd be happy. It's just outside of the city, it's secluded so you have your privacy, its right on the beach, and it's big enough for our family." He'd done it for me, because he knew I didn't like being in the heart of the city around so many people constantly worried someone would find us out and expose our secret and I'd never have a moment of peace again.
"It sounds perfect." I smiled, "But in the future, maybe discuss house buying options with your wife." I held back a laugh as I was trying to be stern and wriggled out of his arms.
Toshinori grinned, "Will do." He raced up behind me and scooped me back up causing me to let out a squeal of laughter.
"What are you doing?!"
"I'm supposed to carry you over the threshold, it's bad luck otherwise." He laughed as he raced up the porch steps.
"I'm pretty sure that's false." I rolled my eyes as I clung to him tightly. He practically skipped up the stairs. I couldn't help but giggle as he balanced me with one arm and fumbled for the keys in his pocket before whisking me inside.
The house was beautiful despite it being empty. The ground floor was open so one could see the living room, kitchen, and dining room from wherever they stood. Opposite the front door was a wall of windows and a sliding glass door that led to a cute fenced in back yard with a little raised koi pond with a small waterfall. There was a fireplace between the living room and dining room, in the middle of the open floor plan. The stairs were along the wall to our right when we entered through the front door, leading to the upstairs. There were three bedrooms and a master suite upstairs. The master suite looked out over the ocean from three large windows, with built in benches. I could see myself sitting in the windows for hours just watching the sea.
It was perfect, we had enough room for the baby's nursery, a guest bedroom and a home office for us to share. There was a basement with a laundry room and plenty of place for storage. In total there were two bathrooms upstairs and one-half bathroom next to the kitchen. The kitchen was much bigger than our tiny one-bedroom apartment kitchen, there was plenty of room for me to prepare any meals I wanted and cupboard space enough for all my kitchen gadgets.
"What do you think?" Toshinori asked me with a smile as I firmly planted myself in the kitchen with a giddy grin as I laid on the floor.
"It's perfect!"
"The kitchen or the house?" He chuckled.
"Both!" I giggled.
"Good." He plopped on the floor beside me and interlaced his fingers with mine.
"When were you planning on us moving?" I asked curiously.
"This weekend." He shrugged.
"Oh, uh, you can start coddling me now, I'm not volunteering for that." I giggled.
"That's alright, I'll take care of everything while you have a girl's day with Midnight." He smiled.
"On second thought, it seems like a pretty big task and I might need to supervise."
Toshinori chuckled and pulled me into his arms. "I'll be fine. You relax, you're still recovering."
"Have you met Midnight? Nothing about her is relaxing." I grumbled.
