Chapter Forty Eight
Ellie's POV
A few weeks later, at 26 weeks pregnant, I was having many a sleepless night. I was exhausted. The babies, though I still didn't believe there were two as the doctors still insisted there was only Eli, kept me up all night moving. Maybe there were two of them and they thought it was super fun to play tag every night to keep me awake. When the babies weren't keeping me up, I was plagued with nightmares.
Midnight kidnapped me early Saturday morning, much to my displeasure. With Grace's help, they got me dressed and out the door before Toshinori even realized what was happening as he hadn't been getting much sleep either due to my tossing and turning and occasional bouts of nightmare violence. I'd accidently elbowed him in the face the week before and gave him a nice black eye. I felt horrible for days which didn't help the sleeplessness at all.
"Where are we going?!" I growled in annoyance as Midnight and Grace dragged me along behind them, each of them keeping a firm hold on an arm to keep me upright and also to make sure I didn't escape.
"Today is pamper Ellie day!" Midnight grinned.
"Cool, then let me go back home and sleep, that's all the pampering I need." I grumbled.
"Nope." Grace giggled. "We're going to the spa."
"That sounds horrible." I groaned.
"It'll be fun." Grace poked me in the side.
"And relaxing." Midnight smiled, "which is what Ellie-chan really needs right now."
"I don't wanna." I whined and tried, in vain, to break away from them.
It didn't work, they were both surprisingly strong. We got to a fancy looking spa. I noticed a sign on the door that said something about a masseuse that specialized in pregnancy massages. I had no idea such a thing existed. That was probably why they picked this place.
We spent nearly two hours at the spa getting massages. By the time we were done, I was so relaxed I'd fallen asleep in the waiting room waiting for Grace and Midnight to finish up. The calming music and the trickling water of the small water feature as well as the scent of fresh lavender did the trick to put me in an exhausted, sleep deprived coma.
I awoke to find Midnight and Grace sitting on either side of me. They looked over as I stirred awake and smiled.
"What are you guys doing?" I fought off a yawn and looked at them curiously wondering why they didn't wake me up.
"You really needed the sleep." Midnight smiled.
"How long was I asleep?" I groaned as I tried to get up.
Grace and Midnight stood up beside me and each took an arm to help me. "About an hour." They said in unison.
"Ugh, because that's not weird at all." I sighed. "Can we go home now?"
"Not quite." Midnight smiled and they pulled me out of the spa.
Before long, I found myself sitting outside of a fancy café at a table under a giant umbrella. I sighed and looked around, surveying my surroundings. I'd never been to this café before but it was pretty close to the restaurant Toshinori had taken me too before he'd started teaching. It felt like so long ago that he'd taken me out to that fancy place as a preemptive apology for being consumed in his work, and now we worked together.
Out of the corner of my eye, near the entrance of an alley, I spotted a little girl of six, with pale white hair wearing a dirty white dress that almost looked like a hospital slip. Midnight and Grace had gone inside to order food and drinks and told me to sit and relax. I frowned; the little girl looked scared. There were tears glittering in her bright red eyes.
I got to my feet and hopped the small fence sectioning off the outdoor seating area from the busy street and sidewalk. The little girl looked at the people walking by helplessly. As I moved closer to the alley, I spotted a man behind her wearing a black cloak and a bird like mask that covered his face. Just like the yakuza on the roof when I'd rescued Grace. I clenched my fists as the little girl turned around and her tear-filled eyes grew wide.
"BACK OFF, CREEP!" I snarled as I lunged forward and took a swing. Raging winds and electricity encased my fist as it connected with the face of his mask. There was a crunch as the hooked beak like front of his mask cracked before he was sent flying backward in a strong torrent of wind and electricity. I smiled softly as I looked down at my round belly, "thanks for the assist parasites." I turned to the little girl and knelt down so I was at her eye level. "Are you alright?" I placed a hand atop her head.
Her eyes widened a little seeming taken aback by the gentle touch. More tears welled in her eyes.
"Are you all by yourself?" I asked her warily.
She hesitated, looking scared to answer.
"If someone is threatening you, don't worry, I can protect you and my parasites love zapping creeps, so don't fret, we can keep you safe." I smiled as I gently wiped away her tears.
"Eri." A cold voice that sent a chill down my spine sounded from the end of the alley. I turned curiously to find a tall man with dark hair. He was wearing all black and had a similar bird beak mask on his face, but it only covered the lower half, leaving his piercing gold eyes visible. "Come here." His cool voice made the girl flinch. Was this the scary guy Gem had warned me about?
"Who are you?" I demanded as I struggled to get to my feet, kneeling had been a bad idea. It didn't look very graceful or intimidating but I managed to get to my feet before he took a step closer.
"Her father."
I frowned, "I see zero family resemblance."
"Eri, come." He ordered the girl coolly.
She took a step away from me and I waved my hands at the man. Strong raging winds shrieked as they tore down the alley before sweeping him up off his feet suspending him in the air. As long as he couldn't touch me, he couldn't hurt me. I didn't care how scary or intimidating he was, I wasn't going to stand by and do nothing.
"You look more like her abuser." I glowered as I took a step closer to him keeping myself between him and Eri. "Do you have any idea what I do to assholes who think they can abuse little girls?"
"Well, this is interesting." I heard a somewhat familiar voice behind me and turned to see the remaining League of Villains at the entrance of the alley where I'd just come from.
Eri jumped and took a running step toward me. Her bandaged arms wrapped around me as she clung to my side, terrified. This wasn't good. I hugged her to my side with one arm and turned so she wasn't in direct line of sight for either enemy. I had to protect this child. "Listen, little one. We're going to part ways for a minute. I'll fly you across the street to that sidewalk. There's a café just a few doors down from that flower shop. Outside there should be two women. One with long dark hair wearing red glasses, the other with big curly hair, run to them. They will get you somewhere safe."
She clung to me tighter.
"Please, little one, there's a lot of scary people here, I don't want you to have nightmares." I gently ruffled her pale hair. "Those two girls are my friends; you can trust them."
She reluctantly nodded.
"Alright. Here we go." I breathed calmly as the League of Villains moved toward me. "Parasites, I could use a lightning bolt." I whispered as I called forth a gentle wind to carry Eri to safety. Strong hellacious winds followed along the gentle breeze keeping Eri from harm until she was safely across the street. A massive streak of lightning tore from the sky above and struck the ground in front of me just as one of the villains tried to reach for me sending them all leaping backward to avoid me. "Alright kids, let's deliver some justice, for daddy." I smiled as I cast my hands out sending strong winds to lash out at all the surrounding villains.
More men wearing varying cloaks of black and some that looked like lab coats in white all wearing birdlike masks began to appear at the other end of the alley. Was this a fucking villain war?
"I was just on my way to meet with you, but something came up." The man I had hovering in the air addressed the hand freak, Shigaraki.
Shigaraki's crimson eyes flicked to me, "she is quite the nuisance."
"Hey, fuckers, probably not a good idea to act like I'm not here. Unless you'd like to be fried chicken." I smirked as another lightning bolt ripped from the sky and struck the ground where Shigaraki had been moments before.
Using the wind, I was able to keep the enemies away from me while I tried to tactically wield the lightning from the parasites to incapacitate them. There were too many of them and now it seemed like they were temporarily working together against me. They had mentioned something about meeting, why were these weird bird like yakuza meeting with The League of Villains?
"You let your guard down, Mrs. Symbol of Peace." The cocky voice of the dark-haired boy with the blue flames pulled me from my internal pondering.
"Shit." I waved my hand reflexively causing a wall of wind to sweep around me as he launched a massive amount of blue flames in my direction. I nearly lost my footing as I stumbled a step back and soon found my back pressed against the brick wall of the alley.
I heard people scream from the street as we finally drew some attention with our fight. As I glanced over, I spotted Eri on the opposite sidewalk and felt my heart drop as another man wearing a white lab coat like cloak and a bird mask stepped out of the opposite alley and picked her up.
"NO!" I took my focus off my enemies and launched a flurry of wind in their direction just as the lizard like villain with the knives lunged for me.
I felt the faint burn as the knife slashed me across the chest just below my clavicle. He swung with a second blade and I caught it in my hand not even wincing as it tore through my palm. His eyes grew wide as he realized I'd caught his blade in my hand.
"Die." I hissed under my breath as I seethed with rage.
A strong electrical current shot from my hand into his blade and he let out a cry of pain as it lashed out at him. Consciousness faded from his eyes and he collapsed to the ground. I flipped the blade in my hand around catching the hilt with my now bloody hand. If my quirk started acting up, I'd need it to defend myself. My breathing was getting heavy. I was losing a lot of blood from the deep wound on my palm and the surprisingly deep wound across my chest.
When I looked back to where I'd seen Eri she was gone, my wind hadn't reached them. Rage burned inside of me. "You, assholes are all going to die." I seethed with rage.
My vision started to blur and I leaned back against the brick wall for support as I suddenly felt very dizzy. Had there been something on the blade? Sweat beaded on my forehead. Police sirens screamed in the distance. The villains decided it was better off for them to leave me and all turned to run.
"I don't think so." I shakily cast out my good hand causing miniscule blades of wind to lash out and tear at them all.
The edges of my vision began to darken and I felt myself start to slip down the wall. No! I had to stop them! I let out a scream of rage and the winds shrieked in response and ripped down the alleyway battering everyone and everything in their path. Dumpsters went flying. The League of Villains grabbed their fallen comrade and managed to disappear down the sidewalk. The yakuza leader had managed to escape, I must have dropped my hold on him at some point. One of his goons had gotten taken out by an out of control dumpster and was lying motionless on the ground. They got away.
I slipped to the ground as the police sirens grew to a deafening volume. My eyes fluttered closed and I fell into unconsciousness.
