Chapter Fifty One
~Ellie's POV~
The babies and I had to stay in the hospital for a week. Due to the poison that had been on the blade I'd been cut with; I was unable to breastfeed until it was cleared from my system. It lingered in my system for a few days even after I'd come back to consciousness after the procedure. When my system was finally cleared, neither of the babes would latch. I felt like a failure as a mother, I couldn't breastfeed my children. It hurt. I was lacking as a mother and I'd only been at it for a few days.
Seeing how distraught I was at the news, Toshinori and all the medical staff tried to reassure me that formula feeding had already been working so well since they were already growing so much and that thousands of children had to be formula fed. They tried to reassure me that it was just as nutritional and there weren't any major drawbacks aside from the bonding time, I would have gotten with them which tore my heart out.
I got visitors daily at all hours of the day. Shota was a frequent visitor taking his role as Godfather very seriously. There were brief moments where he'd display such a violent overprotectiveness when anyone aside from me or Toshinori wanted to hold the babies that made me wonder if he was confused about which type of Godfather role he was supposed to play. Shinso and Midoriya frequently visited. Grace hardly ever left the room and had resorted to bunking at Midnight's place since it was within walking distance of the hospital.
Naomasa was one of my most frequent visitors to check in on me, Toshinori and the kids. He also came to ask me a bunch of questions about what had happened. Aside from those they already knew about from the League the other guys didn't ring a bell. The Yakuza were always pretty careful about covering up their tracks and had been flying under the radar.
Present Mic visited once but didn't return as he'd startled me awake and I nearly sent him flying out the window. Endeavor surprisingly showed up twice and looked embarrassed at having been caught both times. I'd suspected he was trying to do his visiting while I was asleep so he could just check on my condition and leave. It was oddly sweet but also kind of gave me the heebie jeebies as he was still not that high on my favorite people list. After Toshinori told me how Endeavor had helped him through everything, he'd moved up in rank he was somewhere in the middle no longer hated but not liked either.
Bakugo visited almost every night around the same time, his first visit he chewed me out, got zapped by the babies and left. His second visit he was quiet. By his fourth visit he was willing to grumble at me and even held the babies though they both zapped him which was quite comical. Toru and Ojiro visited together a few times along with the rest of the first years.
The most surprising visitor was Nighteye. He brought me some flowers and two plush baby safe ducks for the kids and sat with us for a while, not saying much. He and Toshinori sat in an uncomfortable awkward silence most the time. He cooed at the babies and asked me the expected questions how I was feeling and all that boring stuff and completely ignored Toshinori.
I made an interesting observation through our never-ending visits with all our worried friends and students. The babies would zap everyone with their quirk, except for me. Toshinori was usually exempt as well but if he said something that flustered me, Eli would zap him. This realization gave me a little shred of hope that I wasn't as much of a failure of a mother as I had thought.
When I was finally able to return home, with the babies, there was an army of people waiting to offer their help to get us all home. Even if I gave them all one item to carry of all the items that were sent home with me and the babies, I'd have more people than items. I hadn't realized there were so many people who cared so much about our family. All the students were there, Endeavor was there, Shota, Present Mic, Midnight, and Grace were there. Most surprising of all, Nighteye was there for a brief moment but disappeared after realizing there was a helpful mob already at our beck and call. Shota managed to get almost everyone cleared out pretty quickly. As he tried to send Shinso away though, he fell into Shinso's trap and wound up getting caught in his quirk before being told to sit quietly on the sidewalk.
I couldn't help but laugh at my student, he learned well. "You're going to be in big trouble when he snaps out of it." I warned Shinso with a smile.
Grace, and Midnight helped me and Toshinori get the babies settled safely into their car seats and situated in the taxi van. Midoriya and Shinso put the bags in the back as Present Mic picked up the now catatonic Shota with a sigh and everyone clambered into the van with us. The doctor had informed me I wasn't allowed to lift anything heavier than the twins for at least another week and I wasn't allowed to do anything strenuous for the next four weeks to give the incisions time to heal. My mind kept wandering to the little girl, Eri, and how I'd failed to save her.
I told Toshinori, Midoriya and Shota about Eri. Midoriya wanted to jump into action and scour the city in search of her. Toshinori wanted to side with Midoriya but also wanted to make sure I wasn't going to abandon my bedrest and try to find her while I was recovering. Shota threatened to put me under police surveillance to make sure I didn't try to sneak away and take care of it on my own.
On the drive over, Midoriya informed me he was going to start interning at Nighteye's agency which I had a few reservations about considering how Nighteye felt about Midoriya inheriting Toshinori's quirk. I pulled out my phone and sent a hurried text to Nighteye's phone. Perks of being an ex-villain, I knew how to get information most people didn't.
E: If you let anything happen to Midoriya, I will end you.
N: Ellie?
E: Oh, and the babies love the plushies you got them, thank you.
N: You're exhausting
I tucked my phone away as the taxi van came to a stop on the hidden drive woven within the small patch of forest stretching up the bluffs where our house was located. Shota still hadn't snapped out of his daze though I had a feeling it wouldn't be much longer.
"You can hide in the house; I'll buy you some time and tell him you went home." I ruffled Shinso's unruly indigo hair.
Shinso chuckled at this, "that's alright Sensei, pretty sure you're hormonal enough he wouldn't get far if he tried to retaliate in anyway."
I rolled my eyes at this but I couldn't argue with him, I was feeling extra protective of my kids and that feeling extended to my students. As I reached for Nana, Toshinori swept me into his arms careful not to jostle me too much treating me like a delicate flower. "AH! Toshinori! What are you doing?!"
"I should carry Ellie and the babies across the threshold for good luck." He beamed.
"That's not a thing!" I bristled as I tried to wriggle out of his hold.
Grace giggled, "If I say it's a thing, will you do it?"
"NO!"
Everyone laughed at my expense.
"Parasites, mommy needs an assist." I grumbled.
Eli and Nana both scrunched up their little faces and everyone save for me was zapped with lightning. Toshinori managed to keep a firm hold on me throughout the whole ordeal. The shock was enough to snap Aizawa out of his catatonic state. He came to and threw a glare in Shinso's direction.
"I like having baby tasers." I grinned.
"Your children are nightmares." Shinso grumbled and hurriedly moved away before he could get zapped again.
Toshinori gave me a single pouting look that almost broke me. "Humor me, please."
I tried to tear my gaze away from him, "no...don't give me that look...you know I can't say no to you." I groaned before caving with a long dramatic sigh, "fine, carry us over the threshold."
Toshinori grinned.
"So cute." Grace and Midnight giggled together, it seemed like they'd become close friends while I'd been in the hospital.
Midoriya scrambled to hand me the now giggling bundles so Toshinori could carry us over the threshold for whatever asinine reason he'd come up with. Even though it seemed completely ridiculous and silly, I couldn't help but smile as Toshinori carried me inside the house with Eli and Nana giggling in my arms. He gently set me on my feet and took Eli from me before capturing my lips in a sweet kiss.
"Welcome home."
Everyone helped bring the stuff in from the van and Grace ushered us upstairs to the nursery. The painting she'd been working on was completed. It was a large piece in bright oil paint depicting a scene of a cute animated rubber ducky family enjoying a picnic in the park on the lake. The entire family was wearing All Might costumes. It was probably the cutest thing I'd ever seen and because my hormones were still not working right, I burst into tears and the babies zapped everyone again as a reflex.
"Ah! Sorry!" I wiped away my tears before pulling Grace in for a side hug, "thank you, it's perfect."
