16~ The Frail Queen.
BORNO EMIRATE COUNCIL.
"Whoa, this is where you live?" Suhayr couldn't hide away her astonishment from her voice making him feel proud and his ego to swell up a notch when he asked her not to get hers any higher. He can't help it, he helped in making the castle get a little modern.
"No, this is where I keep my animals." Came his sarcastic reply which abruptly have her gritting her teeth is anger. He knows the button to push to make her mad and he is pressing on it quite too much, he needs to stop.
"I won't be surprised since you are one too." She gave a smirk of triumph when she saw his face falling then he scowled deeply which elicit a chuckle from her. He will get what he deserve, that she promised deeply, a vow Suhayr will never erase.
"Don't get to mighty because of one good comeback, be careful. I'm a Prince and I can have you locked up for insulting me, mind you." Now it's his turn to feel triumph but she wasn't done, she has one to send back to him, he won't get the last words just like that.
"I'm that Prince's wife, I have all rights on you too. I'm not illiterate, dude." She huffed when he narrowed his eyes but didn't get to comment when he looked up at the home they are about to enter.
She stared at the sangria coloured castle that gazed right back at her with it's intimidating eyes. The powder white colour in stripes by the edges making it look less ancient and more of modern home. A clock, a vast one is atop the gates written in roman numerals and looks to be working just fine making her wonder if it has been there for centuries like she's heard most of the things have been in royal homes such as this castle in front of her. It's so gigantic but also complicated in one weird way or the other.
There is also a canopy like building just below the clock painted in rice cream colour, four strong looking pillars holding it in place. On either side of the gate, there is a staircase that leads to God knows where but it probably lead to somewhere up there. Her eyes roam back to the people coming down from the stairs making her wonder if there is a sacred place there she needs to know. You might never know when you will need a secret passage, she is just been cautious.
The building is said to be built with burnt bricks and was constructed by four famous Kanuri masons and architects. That is the home of traditional ruler of Borno who is her husband's grandfather. Who would've thought she would ever be called your highness apart from when she was dreaming? She never thought the time would come where she will feel the aristocracy of being a royal member. But then again, the saying is never play with destiny for you don't know when it will take your stars and make it shine brighter.
She never thought she would find herself in a castle in a foreign country she know nothing about except the fact that her foster mother had some horrid experience with it when she was younger. There is nothing much she wanted to find out but now, she is willing to search all crannies of that country and come up with the definition of it by herself. She needs to finish with this castle first though, there are a lot for her to see and find.
Maybe she might just enjoy her stay if no one troubles her, but if they do, she will be their worst nightmare cause she has already made up her mind. She won't take shit from no fucktard, everyone should respect his or herself then she will be a sweetheart. She hates showing her true colours, but she will if it gets to the place where she has to. Her husband is clearly not telling her a thing about his family.
Their car zoomed in after the first convoys entered followed by the ones at their back. She let her eyes wander around the place taking in how modern it looks from the inside though there are so many sides that looks like wings. She watch as they drive down the long driveway that is interlocked to perfection while the palm trees lined up the walls on each side making it look like she was on a trip in Hawaii and not Nigeria.
There is a water fountain that has traditional calabash painted cedar and tawny making it look historical but it poured water from the side when it got filled by a sword. Woah, that looks incredible and she would like to give credit to whoever it is that did that. Her eyes move from the piece of art to the stoney tub below the calabash and sword where the whole water stays put inside.
That view should be seen at night when you don't get to sleep. Weirdly enough, she wish the window to her room will be showcasing this piece of beauty but she can't see any building in sight so she highly doubt she will see that from a room but it will be worth seeing at night. She let her eyes wander off the front where they keep trudging into, the car in full speed like they were been chase by devil himself.
"Why are you going to that wing?" Sa'eed asked seeing that the cars are trudging into his grandmother's wing not the one he built for himself, his own Chamber.
"Her majesty gave strict orders that we should get you to her wing as soon as you arrive." The driver answered not bothering to look back or even look uneasy as he did when she talked to him.
Darn traitor already knowing his work.
Suhayr kept quite and only watch as they roam around the castle before finally stopping in front of a gigantic building that could be separated from all the other. Is it because of the ancient towers or the gold getting illuminated by the sun standing right in the middle of the sky? It's so beautiful right from the outside and emanate this feeling of royalty that no one knows. It looks like a place where nobody is allowed in but look at her, few minutes after entering the palace she is already going there.
Sa'eed opened the car and left, moving to the hickory oak doors and she hastily followed since he didn't ask her not to come, she won't miss the chance. She sighed then move feeling so sleaze around the place and trust me, she is never one to feel conscious of her appearance even if she is going to meet the king of Saudi Arabia but that particular place is making her feel cheap and like she should just go back to the car and wait for him.
The door opened by the guards standing there in some ruby red and teal blue coloured uniform that manage to look good on them even though they are men. She watch as they bow and call Sa'eed all sort of good names with her too, they already know. Hmm, this should really be fun.
She got in but only miss her step on the scarlet red carpet that is spread across every inch of the corridor. There is no sign of any breathing specie but Sa'eed looks to know where he should go and kept ferrying inside while she look around like a lost puppy. The corridor is wide like a lobby of some sort, the air conditioner blowing from somewhere she can't even see. It feels like an invisible aircon is placed somewhere to scare people like her.
There is a set of white couch by their left which looks clean and spotless with golden sequined throw pillows on them. A spotless center table is in the middle of them where an ancient looking golden and emerald vase sat. In it, is different coloured artificial tulips that are mocking her with their brightness, the only thing that makes the place feel less powerful and intimidating. Those vibrant colours that her mother would like to take with her if she were alive, she loves flowers.
Tall flower pots are on each corner of the four walled place with intricate that will make her eyes bleed before she gets what is drawn. They also have all those sort of flowers inside like orchids, poppies, roses and camellias. She don't even want to remember the name of the others so she removed her eyes from them all the while walking behind Sa'eed so she won't miss him. Then the paints on the walls, they seem to love those stuff because there are so much of them placed on the tan coloured walls.
Is that even a drawing or paint splashed by a kid? The thing looks like it hits some accident right after it was done getting painted. There are only stripes of colours, circles and some other shapes she don't even know if they do exist in dictionary. Who on earth drew those animals and objects then place them in a castle? She chuckled at her own thought then hurried when she saw Sa'eed turning to another corner by the far end.
Wooh, the place is really long that her legs are already aching from too much walks.
The hallway is bare of anything except those paintings and some stones placed on the walls, she's never seen anything like those stones. They look like they are glowing when the sun hit them, be it red or blue but it glows making her eyes squint to see if they are bewitched. Only this hallway has many guards standing at attention like statues only to bow when Sa'eed came to pass through. The lucky bastard gets respect everywhere, that's why his ego is huger than mount everest.
Everyone is willing to give their lives to him which makes him feel mightier than any other person she's ever met. Arrogant bastard!
"His Highness is coming through." Someone announced in front of a door same as the one from before. Hickory and golden intricate patterns all around it.
Sa'eed was let through immediately and she was quick to follow behind, she needs to see that place. Her eyes kept bulging out as she stares at the things her mind has never imagined but she kept mum and only make sound internally so as to not get too much attention to herself. She needs to keep it low key, whoever it is they are going to looks powerful and have the final say since Sa'eed himself couldn't argue.
This room is painted cherry red and golden. The traditional maroon carpet closed all inches in the floor. By the far end where they are facing at the moment is a royal chair Suhayr has never seen even in Pinterest blogs. It's cherry red with golden too then a small cushion where a woman placed her gentle frail old legs that has seen so many days but still manage to be pretty from all the massages she is getting or maybe have her own personal spa in the place.
So many maids are around the room doing one thing or the other making it hard for her to see every inch of it. Apart from that Royal chair, there are some traditional cushions thrown all around the room probably meant to rest your arms after sitting on the floor. There are no chairs or cushions, it is plain except for the three golden coffee chairs sitting around the corners of the room. Jugs and small ancient cups are on all the three which indicates that this person loved tea or whatever.
Then those stupid paints that makes her eyes bleed unnecessarily covered each space, not really but there are more than fifteen of them in the room. This painter must be too good for a Queen to place on her walls.
"Grand mama." Sa'eed called after he gave the woman kisses on both cheeks and a hug making Suhayr come to another conclusion.
This woman here is the queen of that state and not only that, she is extremely close to Sa'eed from their chemistry that looks effortless. They don't look to be awkward around each other, it seems natural.
"Sa'd." The woman called which effectively have Suhayr raising an eyebrow at the nickname, it doesn't suit the man named that at all neither does Sa'eed.
She even named him felicity when the guy us anything but that name. Hmm, she will like to see his side when he is with his grandmother before she concludes anything but that doesn't mean she isn't annoyed. Her voice is amazing if Suhayr would be honest with herself, so beautiful and thin too. She could only wish for her voice to stay like it is when she gets old, not everyone is lucky.
"Where is grand papa? I can't see anyone around, anything going on?" He asked settling himself on one of the traditional cushions not even gesturing that she could sit.
"Don't mind my mannerless grandson. Have a sit, dear." The woman yawed her attention away from Sa'eed and settle it on her for the first time since they walked in.
"Thanks. He really is mannerless." She couldn't stop her mouth from mumbling those words making the Queen raise her brow while Sa'eed glared at her from his position on the floor but she didn't cower and only sat down the way he did to act royal already.
"Feisty aren't we?" The queen still has her brow raised at Suhayr who only shrugged, "Back to you, Sa'd. Your grand papa is still mad at you so tackle your explanation well. The traditions are about to start and everyone is arranging for it. Her family are already sent to the North wing where you will be taking her." She explained to Sa'eed who grunted in annoyance.
"When is it starting?" He asked reluctantly, he hates his own culture and traditions.
"In thirty minutes if Jakadiya comes back soon." The woman walked in just as she closed her mouth as an eunuch announced her presence.
"Your majesty, everything is settled and his Majesty has told everyone about it. The family will be going to the north wing now to ask for her hand in marriage then settle a date which is not important since the marriage is going to take place in a day." The Jakadiya explained in one breath issuing a huge smile on the Queen's face.
"Is his majesty going there too?" She asked sneakily since she wants him to find out as soon as possible so he won't be mad at her Sa'd for long.
"Yes, your majesty. Because it is in the castle, they are all going there now so I suggest the bride is sent to the north wing immediately." Jakadiya's head is still bowed looking at the floor.
"Sa'd, be quick and get her back. Be back here after everything is sorted because I need to discuss some stuff with you. You too Sumara." The Queen said to Sa'eed first then turned to Suhayr and said the last three words.
"It's Suhayr." Suhayr furrowed her brow wanting to know whether she is mocking her or she just genuinely forgot.
"You will be here later, off you go!"
