Camp

Tina awoke on the floor of the Scamander home. Mr. and Mrs. Scamander had volunteered their home to be used as the camp for the army. Wizards and witches lay nearby, far enough for comfort, but close enough to allow every person a place to sleep. Tina glanced around the living room. Newt was fast asleep, twitching slightly. Credence was awake, dark circles under his eyes, sitting by Caoimhe, watching over her as she slept.

Tina already hated the war, and the battles hadn't even started. She closed her eyes, trying desperately not to remember when she had said goodbye to Dawn.

"Daddy! Tell Jacob I want to stay!" Dawn screamed, clinging desperately to Tina as Jacob tried to wrench her away. "Shhh, it's okay, Uncle Jacob will take care of you," Tina said, attempting to soothe the screaming child. "I'm not leaving! Noooo!" Dawn bawled louder as Jacob finally succeeded, wrenching Dawn away from Tina. Dawn screamed, tears streaming down her face as Jacob carried her away and onto the boat to America.

Tina looked back at Newt. When she had first seen him, she had barely recognized him. His hair had been slicked back away from his forehead. The clothes that he had once loved to wear were replaced by a black jacket with dark pants. His eyes were sunken in, and his eyes always looked empty, as if he were only a hollow shell.

Everyone had changed. Alice's beautiful hair had been cut off to her chin, her face covered in bruises and cuts. Caoimhe hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail that was much to strict for her style. Credence refused to sleep, even when Caoimhe insisted that he should, so he looked ashen and weak. Mrs. Scamander's beautiful red hair was frazzled and full of knots. Theseus's bones stuck out of his body because he had given his food to Alice. Everyone wore dark pants with a black jacket. Tina hated it.

"Credence, go to sleep," Caoimhe said softly. "I don't... need..." Credence found it harder and harder to speak as the tiredness began to shut down parts of his brain. He felt something soft press up on his cheek. It took him a second to realize that Caoimhe had kissed it. She wrapped her arms around him, and he instantly nuzzled into her touch, too tired to complain. He found himself drifting off to sleep, head resting on Caoimhe's chest. He inhaled her sweet scent and fell asleep for the first time in days, Caoimhe watching over him.

Tina curled up by Newt's side, and Newt's arms went automatically around her. His scent wasn't there anymore. It made her tear up.

She wished that the war didn't exist. She wished that she were back at home in their bed, Newt sleeping by her side. She wished that she could see Dawn one last time, but it was too late for all that. She buried her face into his chest and sobbed.
