Zayn is finally at the end of the line filtering into the main room.
He sits in a plastic chair, pushed against a wall opposite the one door leading into the room with the four specialists.
And he was nervous, actually.
Like, he'd made it. He'd been in line all day and here he was. Up next. Nearly halfway to meet whoever would be compatible.
Nearly halfway to meet his wife.
And that thought alone had his heart rate accelerate.
"Zayn?"
And he looks up at once.
"Zayn Malik?"
He takes a deep breath.
Here we go.

"Stevie? Stevie Davis?"
"That's me," she whispers, rising quietly from her seat.
The two girls sitting on either side of their sister watch as she pushes back some of the dark curly hair from her face and forces a smile.
"Here I go."
The pink-haired one gives her sister a thumbs up.
"Good luck, Stevie J."
"Yep," the blonde grins. "Good luck, sis."
"Thanks, guys," Stevie grins, grateful for the shift in positivity with her sisters. "See you on the other side."
It had been a completely different story that morning.
"You can't be serious. Janis," Edie looked between her sisters, "Jan, tell me she's not fucking serious."
"Nah," Janis shook her honey-colored head, "I'm checking out of this conversation as of yesterday."
"I told you, if it doesn't work out we can divorce after six weeks!"
"Six weeks my ass!" Edie exclaimed. "Stevie, babe. I love you. I love you a lot. You're my big sister and my role model and my everything, but right now, I gotta tell you, this is some bull."
"Agreed."
Stevie rolled her eyes. "Janis, I thought you'd checked out, boo."
"I'm back. I'm back and I'm better--"
"Stop."
"--and Edie's right, Stevie. This is beyond wild."
"Beyond it."
"What? It could be fun. I could end up with someone great, okay?"
"Or you could end up with a serial killer."
"Or a rapist."
"They run background checks."
"Pssh," Edie folded her arms tightly across her chest, "So? You gonna get a copy of his credit score? His dental records?"
"Right?" Janis agreed, and Stevie rolled her eyes again because Janis always ended up agreeing with Edie, "What if he's got a history of hypertension in his family? What if he comes from a line of diabetics?"
"You won't know, 'cause you're marrying a stranger."
"Okay," Stevie rubbed her temples, "this is the last time I'm telling you two this, okay? I get matched with someone likeminded, okay? After six weeks, if we hate each other, we call it quits, got it? I'm not locked into this if I hate him."
"Then why the hell're you getting married?" Edie asked.
"True," nodded Janis. And she giggled, "That's like, the entire concept of marriage."
"Exactly."
"So," Stevie stressed, "if I love him, which damn it, I hope I will, we stay together. I found my soulmate. I beat the game. I live happily ever after."
Edie's lips pursed. "And if you don't?"
"I'm..."
Stevie really hoped she didn't have to worry about if she didn't.
"I'm right back where I started, I guess."
