Leaving Home

Amy woke up at the break of dawn since she had slept poorly, her worry keeping her awake all night as she tossed and turned.

She couldn't help but think about Mark, how heartbroken he looked when the bouquet of flowers now sitting on her bedside table fell from his hands and were stepped on as he hastily left.

"I can't dwell on that now, I have a job to do." Amy muttered to herself as she sat up and swung her feet over the side of her bed, pausing to yawn before she slid off of the bed.

Her feet landed on the floor with a muffled thud, the wood chilling her feet as she walked over to her dresser to pack all of her necessities.

She jumped when she heard a knock on the door, causing her to stop packing so she could answer the door.

Amy opened the door to reveal Mark standing there with an apologetic smile, his face glowing in the early light.

"I came here to apologize about yesterday, I shouldn't of said what I did or cane here at all. I'm hoping this could make it up to you sir." Mark stated as he offered Amy an envelope.

"Please, call me John." Amy replied gruffly as she cautiously took the envelope.

"Right, John. Didn't I see you there at the center of town when all army volunteers met up?" Mark added curiously.

"You did." Amy nodded.

"I can't wait to defend our country with you then John." Mark smiled as he held a hand out to Amy.

She firmly shook it with what she hoped would pass as enough force before Mark left, the male clearly seeming more at ease after the conversation.

Amy ducked back inside and opened the envelope and opened it to find money inside, as well as an apology letter.

Dear Mr. Nelson,

Please know that I had no idea that Amy was married, otherwise I would not have approached her the way I did. I hope that the money will help you both and may your marriage be filled with happiness.

Sincerely, Mark Edward Fischbach

Amy stuck the letter and money in her bag, starting to leave before she paused at the door of her house.

"I may never see this place again." Amy realized aloud as she glanced back at the place that had been her home for years ever since she had moved away from her family.

"Are you with the army?"

Amy whirled around to find a woman with short brown hair and brown eyes standing behind her, her accent being one that Amy had never heard before.

"I am, yes." Amy answered with a brisk nod.

"My name is Signe Hansen, I'm head doctor of the army and I'm looking for more nurses. Would you be willing?" Signe asked.

Amy considered her choices as Signe's eyes bore into hers, her expression patient and kind.

"Sure, I'd love to." Amy finally said, earning a smile from the woman.

"Great! I'll teach you what I can as we go along since I'm assuming you've never dealt with the sick or injured before." Signe promised Amy as she started walking off.

"Wait, where are you from?" Amy called out after her.

"Oh, I'm originally from Denmark." Signe replied before leaving.

"You should come with me, it's about time for everyone to be getting on horseback." Signe added over her shoulder, pausing to wait for Amy.

Amy shouldered her small bag and braced herself for the weary months to come, hoping that she could fix things between Mark in the process.
