Hidden Secret
"Ah, this is just what I needed." Sean sighed as he broke through the surface of the water to bask in the rain, the droplets spilling down his pale face as he looked up at the sky with a smile.
"Wait, I can make it rain too." Jack smirked playfully as he arched his green scaly tail up out of the water before splashing it back down, sending droplets of seawater raining down on top of him to combine with the rain.
"What do you think Sam?" Jack asked the small green fish with one functioning blue eye that acted as his companion.
Sam flicked its tail in reply before nuzzling against his side as a sign of affection.
"Yeah, I figured you'd think that." Jack chuckled knowingly as he ran a hand along the top of Sam's head before he looked back up at the sky.
He was startled from his thoughts when he heard a female voice scream a name he didn't recognize, her tone conveying her panic.
"Stay in the cave, I'll be back." Jack told Sam before he swam off to help, his sparkling green tail propelling him forward at a speed that was faster than any human could swim.
Once Jack arrived at the place where he heard the cry emanate from, he looked down to see a woman floating to the bottom of the sea.
"A human." Jack gasped in disbelief as he looked down at her.
Her brown hair floated around her like a halo as her arms hung limply at her side, her dress blue like the water threatening to suffocate her.
Jack dove down and reached for her hand, managing to grab it and pull her closer to him so he could swim her back up to the surface, his tail burning slightly from the effort it took to bring them both back up.
Jack kept the woman's head out of the water as he swam back to his home where Sam was waiting for him.
"Please be okay, please." Jack begged as he laid her down on the slightly rocky entrance of the cave, his blue eyes filled with concern as he gently swiped strands of her hair out of her face.
"She's beautiful." Jack breathed in awe, Sam nudging him with a gleam in his eye.
"No Sam, I can't tell her the truth about my...predicament." Jack protested as he gestured at his tail.
"She wouldn't care to help me anyway, she probably has problems of her own to deal with." Jack added as he glanced back at her.
Jack flinched back when the woman abruptly sat up and started coughing water out of her mouth, her eyes wide in alarm as she gasped for air.
She had brown eyes that looked like the color of his hair, her complexion slightly more tan than his.
Jack ducked under the water before she could see him, San bumping against him and motioning for him to go back.
"I-I can't." Jack stammered as he swam down away from her.
"Wait!"
Jack froze at the sound of her voice that held a hypnotizing accent, her tone kind.
Jack hesitantly swam back up to the surface to face her, making sure to hide his tail out of sight.
"Who are you?" The woman asked gently as she crawled closer to the water's edge.
"Um, I go by Jack." Jack stated awkwardly, mentally cursing his inability to be social.
"Have you seen anyone else? I was with a man that had short brown hair and blue eyes." The woman asked.
"I'm sorry, I haven't." Jack told her grimly.
"Was his name Robin?" Jack added curiously.
"Yes! How did you know?" The woman countered.
"I heard you shout his name, that's how I found you." Sean admitted.
"Wait, I'm sorry, I never said thanks yet." The woman apologized sheepishly.
"It's alright, really." Jack assured her with what he hoped passed as a comforting smile.
"My name is Signe by the way, it's a pleasure to meet you." The woman introduced herself cooly despite her close encounter with death.
"Well my name's still Jack, just don't wear it out." Jack replied jokingly, smiling when he heard Signe giggle.
"I'll try not to." Signe replied lightly.
"I, uh, are you hungry?" Jack asked as he picked a strand of seaweed out from under the water and offered it to her.
"I'm alright." Signe answered, politely declining his offer.
"Right. Okay, I, um..." Jack trailed off as he realized that he had no idea what to say to her next.
"Can you help me look for my friend Robin?" Signe asked hopefully as she looked at Jack with her brown eyes that he was beginning to adore.
"I'll do my best, just wait here." Jack instructed before swimming off, praying that she had no idea that he was a merman.
At least not yet.
"Maybe...no, she'd never." Jack muttered as he began his search, hoping he could help and see that beautiful smile of hers again.
