Accident
Jameson woke up to the sound of a door quietly creaking open, causing him to abruptly sit up in alarm.
"It's okay, it's just me. I got us some food for breakfast." Will soothed the jumpy Irishman, showing him the hand woven basket of fish in his hands.
"You like fish?" Will asked him as he went outside, motioning for Jameson to follow him.
"Never had it." Jameson admitted with a shrug.
Will sat the basket on the ground before gathering a pile of sticks to create a sizable bonfire.
"I think you'll like it." Will remarked as he drove a stick through one of the fish and set it up like a spit roast, kneeling down to light the fire with a small lighter from his pocket.
"You wanna come with me to get water?" Will asked with a grunt as he stood back up.
"What about the fire?" Jameson countered warily.
"I'll have someone watch it for us." Will assured him.
"The river is this way, we'll bring some back here and boil it to make sure it won't get us sick." Will continued as he walked off, Jameson following him like a lost puppy.
Will held a small clay jar in hand for the water, the outside covered in vibrant colors and intricate patterns.
"So, why didn't you bring food?" Jameson spoke up as they walked along the worn dirt trail.
"I like eating what the area has to offer. That, and it means less things for me to pack and carry." Will explained with a small shrug.
"Fair enough." Jameson mused.
"Have you ever even been out of Ireland before?" Will prompted casually.
"Wouldn't you know that with all of the research you gathered on me?" Jameson muttered bitterly.
"Look, I'm sorry." Will apologized softly.
The pair silent for a moment as they reached the river, Will squatting down to scoop up some water.
"I didn't find you by mere coincidence."
Jameson's gaze shot away from the murky water to look at Will, confusion shining in his eyes.
"Mark had told me about someone named Sean, and he encouraged me to take him. When I went into the pub, I found the man that fit his description perfectly." Will paused for a moment as he looked out at the horizon.
"As soon as I heard your name, I considered leaving." Will admitted, earning a hurt expression from Jameson.
"But then I saw that look in your eyes, like a part of you was missing. The kind of look I see in my eyes every time I look in the mirror." Will sighed softly with a sad smile.
"Once I knew your name, I had the detective research and send me all he knew about you." Will continued.
"But why?" Jameson frowned.
"I wanted to see if you could he trusted, and I wasn't about to pair up with someone that would annoy me." Will stated with a slight mischievous smirk that made Jameson smile back.
"I'm not annoying?" Jameson scoffed in mock disbelief.
"Well, you did rescue me from the quicksand." Will reminded him.
"Yeah, only after I accidentally knocked you into it." Jameson countered.
"Well I thought it was an exhilarating start to our adventure." Will remarked.
"Exhilarating is one word for that I guess." Jameson chuckled.
"I trust you Jameson," Will added in a light serious tone.
"I just hope you'll learn to trust me too."
"I do." Jameson replied.
And for the first time since they met, he truly did.
"C'mon, let's get back so our food doesn't burn." Will instructed, a spark of joy shining in his eyes.
Jameson nodded and turned to go back, only to move too fast and slip on the muddy bank of the river.
He yelped in surprise as he fell back into the water, his clothes quickly becoming soaked and muddy.
Once Will realized that he wasn't in danger, he laughed at Jameson hard enough to make him double over.
"Shut up." Jameson mumbled in embarrassment as Will offered him a hand up.
Without warning, Jameson dragged Will into the river with him so they could share in the suffering.
Will laughed as he emerged from the depths, his hat floating a few inches away from him.
"Here." Jameson chuckled as he slapped the sipping wet hat onto Will's head, causing the water left inside to cascade down his face like a waterfall down a cliff.
"Gee thanks." Will replied sarcastically as he stood up, brushing what mud he could off of him while wringing his clothes.
"Am I annoying yet?" Jameson snickered teasingly as he too stood up, shaking his hair like a dog would shake its fur to send water droplets flying into Will's face.
"You're getting there." Will chuckled jokingly.
"We should probably get changed before we eat." Will advised as he looked down at his dripping wet attire.
"Good plan." Jameson agreed, walking alongside Will back to their fire.
The same man that had greeted the adventurers upon their arrival was waiting for them with a clay plate covered in cooked fish, the fire gently cracklings behind him.
The pair nodded in appreciation as they took their food, setting it down by the fire before retreating into the hut to put on fresh clothes.
Soon Will emerged in a cream colored long sleeve shirt and light brown pants that were held up by bright red suspenders, his wet black hair plastered to his forehead.
Jameson has changed into what he was wearing when Will had met him, mainly because he felt comfortable in them.
They ate breakfast quickly before gathering necessary supplies for their long hike and disappearing into the jungle once more to look for their prize.
"Is there like a whistle or something you can do to attract elephants?" Jameson wondered aloud.
"I'm afraid not, but if you want to make your own elephant calls you can." Will stated.
Jameson pressed his lips together and blew air through them at a rate that allowed a trumpet sound to come out much to his own delight.
Will only laughed at his counterpart as he guided them to the best spot he knew of to find elephants, enjoying this hunt much more than the ones he had previously done alone.
"Shh." Will abruptly whispered, pointing off into the distance where an elephant was lumbering around.
Will motioned for Jameson to follow him as he silently crept forward, his rifle drawn.
They froze when Jameson accidentally stepped on a branch, causing a sharp crack to echo around them.
The elephant noticed them and charged, provoked by the noise and strangers.
"Move!" Will barked, pushing Jameson out of the way as the elephant charged past.
"Thanks." Jameson gasped, shocked at how close to death he had come.
"Take this." Will tossed him the pistol Jameson had used earlier against the snake, surprised to find one last bullet in the chamber.
The elephant let out a mighty trumpet as it reared up on its hind legs, Will taking the opportunity to take a shot.
The bullet bounced embedded into the elephant's leg, causing it to cry out in pain and stagger to keep its balance.
Jameson looked over to see a baby elephant wailing for its parent, it's tusks not even grown in yet.
Will took another shot, this one making the beast collapse to the jungle ground with a defeated cry.
"Damn, this is out." Will cursed softly under his breath as he tossed the rifle aside.
The elephant struggled to stand, but could only manage to lift its head before slumping back onto the ground.
"Jameson, give me your gun." Will instructed.
"You can't kill it, the elephant has a kid for fucks sake!" Jameson protested.
"Jameson-"
"No, this is fucked up!" Jameson snapped furiously, holding the gun away.
Will abruptly lunged out at Jameson, wrestling with him for possession of the weapon.
"Let it go!" Will shouted.
"No, we can't kill it!" Jameson argued.
Will managed to have a hold on most of the gun, digging his feet into the ground to pull the gun back.
A gunshot echoed through the jungle.
Jameson looked down at his abdomen to see a dot of red appear and grow on his blue vest and soak through his white shirt as his fingers slipped from the gun.
Time seemed to move in slow motion for Jameson as he lightly pressed his fingers against the wound, looking at his blood stained finger tips before he crumpled to the ground.
Will snapped out of his shocked stupor and caught the Irishman just before he hit the ground, cradling his head in his lap as tears welled up in his chocolate brown eyes.
"C-Colonel." Jameson choked out, fighting to breathe through the pain as he looked up at the devastated dark haired male.
"Shh, I'm right here, I-I can fix this." Will stammered, jaw trembling as he looked around for his bag of supplies he had set aside during the battle with the elephant.
The bag was gone, dashing any chance of Jameson's survival.
"I-it hurts....I..." Jameson trailed off as darkness began to take hold of him.
"It was an accident," Will whispered as Jameson's sapphire blue eyes fluttered shut for good.
"I swear."
Will remained sobbing over his friend's corpse for hours, refusing to let any creature touch him as he grieved.
Eventually, Will buried Jameson to hide his own guilt and to protect him from scavengers, keeping Jameson's monocle as a reminder.
"Goodbye...old friend." Will sighed, swallowing hard as he stood over the mound of dirt Jameson was covered by, a bundle of exotic flowers that Will had gathered laying on top.
Will shook his head as he turned to leave, using every ounce of willpower he had to not look back and break down.
Once he had gotten a few feet away, Will finally dared to glance back one last time.
Only to see Jameson's grave empty.
The End.
