Your home phone rang, distracting you from the TV. It was the hospital, they said Mark was there and wasn't doing well. He had too much to drink out with his friends and passed out. They were getting him into emergency surgery as you spoke.

You sat in the waiting room outside the surgery, your foot bouncing up and down nervously. Nurses would come by and offer you water. You drank it gratefully.

A nurse whose nametag read 'Jackie' woke you up on the couch outside the surgery room. Mark's surgery had been finished, he was resting in his room. They expected he would wake up soon.

You sat at his bedside, his hand in yours. Under your breath you were muttering silent prayers to a god you weren't sure you believed in. Mark's chest was rising up and down peacefully, even amidst all the tubes and wires. He was supposed to have woken up by now.
You perked up when you thought he was squeezing your hand. It was only a spasm, which was then carried up throughout his whole body.
The nurses and doctors rushed in as he seized and convulsed. Jackie tried to get you out of the room, and you fought back. He was yours to watch over, yours to love, yours, yours, yours. A flatline sounded in the room, but only for a moment. They managed to shock him back.
The tears stayed at bay as you rushed back into the chair.

You weren't holding his hand now. He looked too weak, too fragile. As if he would shatter if you touched him.
His breaths were more faint now, his chest no longer rose triumphantly, instead it weakly shook.

The doctors told you he would make it, but deep in your soul you knew he wouldn't.
You were unafraid to hold his hand, or to lay your head on his chest, just to feel him beneath you. Still breathing.
You hummed him his favorite song, told him your favorite memories from your time together, relayed the first time you met, and just how much you loved him.

His heartbeat was getting softer under your ear.
You allowed yourself to cry as you thought of when you woke up this morning in the same position. This would be the last time you'd be in his arms. This would be the last time you'd be able to kiss him.
Your lips graced over his face, his neck, his arms, his hands, everywhere you could reach without disturbing the comforting position you were in.

There it was.
The flatline he wasn't going to be coming back from.
With it, you could hear your heart breaking.
You couldn't hear Mark's heartbeat.
You could feel your chest getting heavy with the weight of sorrow.
You couldn't feel Mark's chest rise and fall.
He wasn't here anymore with you, and you knew it in your soul.
Resigned, you stood away from his lifeless body just as a nurse asked you to.
They attempted to shock him back, the electricity making him flail as he could've been alive. You couldn't watch the fake life anymore. You wanted to scream, run, and die all at once. The least you could do was run from your problems for now.
As your foot had crossed the threshold of the room, you could hear the doctor declare time of death.
4:46 am.
The exact moment that the best part of your life was officially gone.
And he took your love with him.
