"Place your heart in the hands of a God, and he shall place it in the hands of one who deserves it."

• Her lungs filled with the cold, crisp air of October, her body clutching her long robe closer around her body. Other than her arms hugging herself, there was no other way to show she, indeed, was chilly. Her feet balanced precariously on the edge of a thin branch, her dull grey irises watching a couple from above. A gust of air came tumbling from her trembling lips.

She stared down at a woman and her familiar, the once great Lord Tomoe. The woman smiled so elegantly at the familiar, it made her heart beat irregularly. "You are killing yourself, Ayameko," the woman muttered to herself. She watched Tomoe ruffle the woman's hair.

"Lady Nanami. Next time, let me clean the well. It is not fit for a land God to do a familiars duties."

"Oh, it's not a problem at all!" the land God, Nanami, replied, a bright smile adorning her delicate features.

The familiar frowned, making Ayameko inwardly cringe. Do not frown, Tomoe. Smile. Smile...

Ayameko turned away from the happy looking duo, and jumped off of her branch, to another, father away. She landed nimbly, her arms tucked inside of her robe. She hopped from tree to tree, the cold air whipping at her face. The speed almost hurt her neck. If she had been a normal human, this would've been a problem, but Ayameko was not normal. She was a yokai, a monster of sorts. That was how humans viewed her kind. Monsters, lingering under their beds, and nightmare's, penetrating their sweetest dreams. Her blank expression masked the unhappiness inside of her. She was remembering that day, the day she had met Lord Tomoe, the most feared yokai in her realm.

It was three hundred years ago. Ayameko was but a child. Her home was now in ruins, and she was cast away, her only father, now dead. It was then, wandering the cold, bitter forest, she met Ingaru, the spider yokai. As the chilly air nipped at her exposed skin, she felt a tug on the back of her long, dirty hair. When she turned around, her shrill scream rang about the isolated area. Her heart beat faster as the hairy legs grabbed her from the waist, looking her straight in the eye. The smell emitting from Ingaru was putrid, and to this day, Ayameko could recall everything about him. The horrid smell of his breath, the dark cloud of miasma that followed him around like an omen, and his several, beady eyes.

"Help! HELP! Somebody help me!" she screeched, clawing at the legs that bound her.

"Let me go! LET ME GOO!"

Little Ayameko was defenseless. She cried as she realized she was to die alone, like her God, and father had. Her eyes closed in horror as the yokai's awaiting maw snapped open and shut in anticipation. But before she was swallowed whole, there was a sickening crunch.

Ayameko let out a cry as she was suddenly dropped, and hit the cold snow. Just as suddenly as Ingaru had been there, he had disappeared. Ayameko, shaking, stared in the spot where he once was. Wide eyed, she only saw his remains; charred leftovers and dissipating poison in the air.

Once the smoke cleared, blown away by winters harsh winds, she stared into the beautiful eyes of a fox.

His hair was a blindingly gorgeous silver white, reaching the snowy ground. He possessed a fan in his right hand, covering his right eye, while the chromatic color of his eyes shone through. Behind his body, poking out of his blood stained robe, was a full, white tail. Ayameko was won over by this man's appearance, her breaths stuck in throat. "Are you just going to look, girl?" the man asked. Ayameko gasped and covered her head, shaking. She knew she couldn't fight this yokai, nor could she will him away. She would have to bear it, or die trying. As the young child shivered, she felt a sudden warmth caress her frail body.

It was the fox yokai.

He now only wore a white, long sleeved shirt, along with a white trousers, his flame-like robe around the shoulders of the child.

"M-Mr. Fox...won't you be cold?"

The yokai said nothing, staring down at the child with an unreadable expression. "My name is not Mr. Fox. It is Tomoe."

And with that, he disappeared.

Ayameko gasped, looking around her wildly. The daydream she had, remembering that fateful day, felt so real. She could still feel the cold sting of the winters wind, and the heat radiating from the robe. The same robe she wore to this day.

She stopped at a particularly spindly tree, and bent over, catching her breath. Her heart beat faster in her chest, memories overwhelming her. She narrowed her dull blue irises and bared her teeth. The chilly air blew her long black hair around her body. Her mind wandered towards the land God. The one who stole her Lord, her love. "I will have you someday," Ayameko murmured. "And no one will stand in my way."

"Nanami! Hurry up, you're the only one who didn't show up for class yet," Ami yelled out. Nanami sighed. She slipped on her shorts and walked into the hallway, when she spotted a baby chick. The chick was limping.

"Awe. Hello little chickie. Are you hurt?" Nanami gathered the baby in her hands, when black fog surrounded her body, and she felt herself become woozy.

She held the chick closer to her body as she wobbled, falling into her knees. She coughed, her vision fading in and out, finally passing out.

Nanami's eyes opened slowly but surely. She couldn't see anything too clearly, but noticed that the baby chick was missing. Her brain was slowly at comprehending, and tried to move, but her body was immobile. Her head lolled to the side, to where she saw a woman staring at her. At first, all she could see was the outline of her body, and then more details appeared. Nanami took a look into her dull blue eyes, and was surprised at how they stared at her.

"W-why are you staring at me?"

The woman frowned. "I am just wondering why a pitiful human like you enchants my dear Tomoe."

Nanami's face instantly hardened, all fogginess leaving her brain. "And who exactly are you? What do you mean by your 'dear Tomoe?'"

The woman stood up, staring down at Nanami. "Ayameko Mizota."

Ayameko started to walk away, when Nanami shouted back at the woman. "What the heck is going on? Why am I here?" Ayameko glanced back at the land God, watching her struggle as her arms and legs were bound. A small smile tugged at Ayameko's lips. "Isn't it obvious? You are my captive." Nanami was taken aback. Why was she some strange womans captive? What had she done? And why did she call Tomoe her own? Questions circled Nanami's mind.

"Let me go!" Nanami demanded.

Ayameko felt a pang in her heart when she heard Nanami scream those words. The same words she had yelled when she was faced with imminent death. But she had been rescued by Lord Tomoe. Nanami would not be, not if Ayameko could stop it.

"I will not let you go. You are in my way, so you shall be eliminated."

Nanami winced. "Why do you want me so bad?"

Ayameko frowned, strutting closer to Nanami. She grasped her face tightly, making the land God look deep into her blazing eyes. "It is not you I am interested in, but your familiar, Tomoe. I will soon enough take that away from you. And you will be left, forgotten." Ayameko sneered momentarily, but then orchestrated her face into one of vacancy. Her lips twitched, and then slowly pulled into an awkward smile. Her body began to shake, and soon enough she burst into uncontrollable laughter, pivoting her whole body to the floor.

"Hahaha!" she cackled.

Nanami growled at Ayameko. "STOP! Tomoe would never forget about me! Never..." as Nanami trailed off, Ayameko's laughter died off as well.

"Tomoe will never love you, land God."

"You're lying," Nanami whispered.

"I am not. He shall leave you someday and never return."

"You're lying," she said, conviction lacing her every word.

"Why would I be?" Ayameko asked amusedly.

"Because you want him. You want my Tomoe. But you'll never have him!"

Ayameko looked away. She felt something heavy press into her chest, and she clutched at her robe. The pitter-pat of her heart reminded herself that she, herself, would never have Tomoe. "I believe in those I care about," Nanami said quieter now. "And because I care about Tomoe, I believe he will come and find me. He'll bring me home. I'll never be left behind."

Ayameko couldn't take it. Her hands slid into her thick pockets and pulled out a feather. She threw it as hard and as fast as she could, slicing Nanami's cheek. Ayameko was crazed as she stared intensely into the eyes of the land God. "Do you know how it feels to love someone who shall never love you back? To love someone who already has something precious to them? And not being able to kill that precious thing, for if you do, it would go against the love you have for that person. Therefore, I shall keep you here forever."

"Tomoe will come for me, Ayameko."

The yokai woman grit her teeth. "Yes. I know. And that is what breaks my heart the most, Goddess Nanami. The fact that you are my loves, Precious One."

Not a split second later, the door was busted open. Debris and wind filed into the old cabin, making Nanami wince and shut her eyes. When she looked up, she gasped, tears filling her vision. "Tomoe! You came for me!" She was ecstatic at his arrival. The woman's words were finally starting to sink in, and she began to think what she said was true. She feared Tomoe would forget her, and never come, making her Ayameko's prisoner for life.

Ayameko watched from the tree balancing on her toes. She watched sadly as Tomoe swept his mistress into his arms, and carried her away. He doted on her, was kind to her, and obviously loved her.

This made Ayame angry, sad, and frustrated.

"Are you just going to look, girl?"

"M-Mr. Fox...won't you be cold?"

"My name is not Mr. Fox. It is Tomoe."

"I am just wondering why a pitiful human like you enchants my dear Tomoe."

"Tomoe will come for me, Ayameko."

"Yes. I know. And that is what breaks my heart the most, Goddess Nanami. The fact that you are my loves, Precious One."

Ayameko watched the couple from up above as she always did, fresh tears sliding down her passive face. She let them drip into her robe. Her eyes closed for a second, and she could see the old Tomoe, with his long silver hair and piercing eyes. When she opened her eyes, Nanami and Tomoe were gone, and she was left with the memory.

"Be good to him. Keep him happy, Tomoe's Precious One."
