Mari [Black Blood]: I don't need anyone anymore.. I'll just eat everyone.

Mari [Sane]: I need him more than anything else in this world... just to hold him tight and kiss him until the world ends, and he can make all my scars go away, and then i don't have to be scared anymore. I just don't want to be afraid of anyone. Please... I hope you're not afraid of me.

-Please Stand By-

Mari's eyes opened to darkness and she was still, her body not strong enough anymore to move. Her arms felt weak like broken sticks and her leg felt like there was stones tied to them. She felt as if her bones would snap if she moved, so she was still. "Kidd..." her cracked lips ushered.

The door opened and she squeezed her eyes shut at the sudden brightness. She tried to hold her arm over her face, but they were limp by her sides. The figure stepped inside and closed the door.

"Mari." Medusa said.

Mari opened her eyes and looked up at the woman. "What do you want?" She crackled, her lips beginning to bleed black blood. The cracks sealed as black scars and faded quickly. A jab of pain stabbed her stomach and she cringed, her dark blood splattering her lips.

"You need to eat." Medusa said.

Mari laughed a little and tried to move a shaking hand to her mouth to wipe away the blood. Her fingers brushed her mouth and pain arched through her body at the motion. "What sort of food?" She smiled up at the sealing. "Normal food won't do anything."

Medusa grinned, her hands moving around in her pockets. "No, no." she walked to Mari, leaning over her. "I mean human. Flesh, blood..." Medusa shivered with the thought. "Souls."

Mari closed her eyes. She took in a breath, her mouth watering. "Ok...ay..." Medusa pulled away and Mari began to sit up. Her bones crackled under her skin with a popping sound and Mari didn't flinch as she stood, cracking her neck. "Where?" She asked, her voice ragged.

Medusa began to walk out, beckoning. "Just follow me." She said.

Mari took a few steps forward, halting at first, then her hunger truly hit her and she followed Medusa, her jerking body movements eager. They walked down hallways that turned into more hallways until they had reached a door, a door that smelled like fresh air and... humans. Mari opened the door and stepped out, warm wind hitting her face. She walked in the direction where she smelled people, something controlling her. She felt trapped and she couldn't tell her legs what to do, and when she spoke, she sounded different, calmer. "I want to eat. Now."

She slammed a house's door open, the black blood fully controlling her now. She seemed to be in Death City and she could smell all the souls. She stepped into the house, her wings folded behind her. "Souls..." her voice crackled.

She heard a pair of footsteps walk in her direction and she reached her hands out to either side of her, almost waiting to embrace the person so she could eat their soul.

The woman in front of her screamed and fell back, stumbling on a rug and falling. "What the..."

Mari stepped forward toward the woman and fell on top of her, her hands on either side of the woman's head. The woman was shaking and was frozen to the spot. A man came out of the same room, a tense look on his face, when he saw the woman beneath Mari, he yelled and charged her.

Mari looked up at him, of her wings flying up and nocking him to the ground, unconscious. She turned back to the woman and smiled with her teeth, opening her mouth to tear out her throat.

"Stop!" someone said and Mari froze. She felt something cold on her neck and she turned, finding two duel pistols pointed at her. She saw Kidd's distort face and her hands began to shake.

"No!" She screamed, the two people in her battling for control; madness and the girl that used to be her. "Stop!" she shouted, her voice changing and cracking. She pulled at her hair, her eyes rolling like an animal's. She bent down next to the woman's throat and bared her teeth, about to rip the woman apart.

"Mari..." Kidd said. "If you do this... you'll never be human..." She heard him fall to his knees as the woman shook beneath her.

Mari turned her head slowly, her teeth slowly digging into the woman's neck. "But... I'm not human..." Tears were flowing down her cheeks. "No one can love a monster like me... only Medusa, and she doesn't even love me."

Medusa was suddenly behind Mari, her arms wrapping around her in a hug. "I do love you, Mari. More than Crona, even. More then my own child." Medusa's hands moved to clamp Mari's jaw down on the neck of woman beneath her.

Mari could taste blood and it was sweet to her now. Her tongue felt the woman's skin and longed for it. 'Eat.' Her mind said.

"Mari..." Kidd said, tears falling from his cheeks as he held Liz and patty steady at her. "If you do this... I'll never get to love you again... please..." he bent his head down.

She was suddenly in a bright white place and there was nothing all around her. She was in white clothing and her dark eyes and wings shone out like stones on a beach.

"Mari." A voice said and she turned. Mari's eyes welled up with tears as she saw her mom. Her arms were open and her long silver hair shone out behind her. "Mari, there's something I need to tell you... but you can't tell anyone."

Mari's tears rolled down her cheeks and she ran to her mom, throwing her arms around her small waist. "M-mom!" She sobbed. "Why are you here?" She pulled away so she could look at her mother's face. "You died when I was five..."

Her mother kissed her forehead, a ripple of white appearing when her soft lips touched Mari. "It's because... I'm not dead."

Mari stared up at her mother, her head spinning. "W-what?"

Her mom stroked her head. "When I was born, my mother, your grandmother, was a witch, and my father, your grandfather, had a keshin egg soul. I was a mix between two very evil things and they showed me how to control myself so no one would find out and kill me. When I was fourteen, both of them were killed and I ran from my attacker.

"I grew up on the streets until I met your father, a kind young man, and then I was pregnant with you." She smiled and held Mari's face in her hands as if she didn't look like a monster. "When you were born, I had to release my soul protect because I didn't want to hurt you with magic." A dark shadow passed over Mari's mother's eyes. "When I held you, minutes after you were born, I knew that they would find me and I would need to do something. But you... they would've killed you... because... because..."

Mari shook a little. "Because?"

Mari's mom, Aya, hid her face. She took in a breath then looked up at Mari, tears flying from her eyes. "When you were born, you were a monster." Mari's heart stopped. "And don't mean deformed or anything..." Aya wiped her face. "I have seem monster, terrible things, and you..." She looked up at Mari. "You were a monster. The doctor fled the room and your father backed away from his own child and I..." The woman smiled. "You were a monster, but I held you in my arms. You had the same black eyes and wings as you do now, but sharp claws like daggers, and rows upon rows of needle teeth, white like bone."

Mari fell to her knees, her hands falling from Aya. "No... no why...?"

Aya moved to the ground next to Mari, the long white dress she was wearing billowing around her. "Because I need to tell you everything." Mari held her shoulders and rocked back and forth. Aya stroked her head and tilted her chin up so she could see Mari's dark eyes. "On that day, I looked into my child's black, beautiful eyes, and I knew I would do anything for you. So when the academy students came, I still remember, it was Stein, you know him. He walked to me and I remember the look of crazed enjoyment as he stared down at me and you. I told him about my parents and that I had never eaten or killed anyone that hadn't hurt me first and he said that if I ever strayed that he would kill me and, if you ever strayed, her would kill you. I begged him, told him that you could help the academy with your skills and powers and he said, 'Five years and you have to hide what that thing really is.' That's all I had with you."

Mari looked up at her mom. "But I can remember you dying on that day..."

Aya's smile was sad. "I remember having to put a spell over you so you honestly thought I was dead. You were so little. I had to tell your father that I had to go or the academy would kill me. I put a final spell on you that would make your soul look human until you found me." Aya looked around them, the edges of the white place flickering. "I don't have much time..." she said. "I told him to let you go to the academy since I knew you were a weapon, and to tell you that I had been a weapon or meister. Then, I had to leave my husband and child with a replica of my body, and the sadness of your mother dying."

Mari was in shock and she couldn't move. "Wait... where are you? I need your help... and how can I see you?"

Her mom smiled. "It's a vision I'm sending you from where I am. They have me." Her mom's face flickered and began to disappear. "Ask the Reaper, and Mari..." Mari held onto her mom's hand as it vanished. "Kill Medusa."

Mari opened her eyes and was back in the hallway with the woman at her teeth, Kidd behind her, and Medusa pushing her jaw down into the woman.

Mari pulled her teeth out of the woman and sat back, standing slowly.

"Mari?" Medusa asked, almost sounding annoyed. "Why aren't you killing her? Aren't you hungry?"

Mari felt her form changing again and tears of pain rolled down her cheeks as her teeth grew to the needle teeth her mother had spoken of and her fingers sharpened into claws.

'So we've been a monster this whole time... haven't we?" the sane part of her mind said.

'Yeah.' The madness in her whispered like a snake. The two mixed and came to an agreement, their essences mingling and becoming one.

"No." Mari said, her voice sounding different through her teeth.

Medusa got what she was saying a moment too late and her thoughts registered as Mari's hand ripped her in two. Her blood splattered over Mari and Medusa's eyes got wide for a second.

She smiled. "Well," She said, her body beginning to glow. "At least it was you who killed me, Mari. My child. My little demon." She held out her arms. "Take it." She said as her body dissipated and turned into a purple soul.

Mar took the soul in her hand and brought it to her lips, slipping it into her mouth. She could feel the snakes in her vanish as the soul went down. Mari felt her form glow for a second and she leaned her head back, hoping she would become herself again. Or... what she had believed to be herself.
