Part Nineteen - Larnaca

Larnaca, 1960

So many homes barely list them all
It's the little things you always recall.
Red shuttered windows, ceiling fan,
Wake up wondering where I am.
Staring round unfamiliar room
Remember this is now our home.
One thing that will make you laugh.
A silly tale, that's a wee bit daft.
At school we have to share our news
Mine bought chuckles to all who viewed.
You/won't guess what it was I drew.
Mum chased by a cockroach out the loo
Knickers round ankles, what a to do!
Teachers shared it round the school
Parents evening on the wall.
What was mum supposed to do?
But join in with the laughter too.
Our Larnaca then is different now
Things have changed. I'll tell you how.
An open air cinema one end of the street.
Was loud and noisy; that end was Greek.
From the other end came a call to prayer.
As you may guess they were Turkish there.
Before the Turkish armies came;
The island was one; may it be so again.
We were in these places roughly a year
Our next stop Dhekelia.
We'll be longer longer there.
Two whole years. How will we fare?

The map shows Cyprus as it is today. We lived there in the 1960s before the island was divided. It was split after the Turkish invasion in 1974. You'll see we have lived both sides of the border and in No Man's Land.
