track twelve.
DAISY: We must've written eight or nine songs the first couple weeks. I would have an idea, and then he'd flesh it out, or he would come up with a riff, and I'd come up with a melody line.
BILLY: When you're making an album, any album, it's an intimate thing. I mean, it has to be.
DAISY: Which isn't to say we didn't...fight.
BILLY: Oh, we were fighting constantly (chuckles).
WARREN: For a month it was like that. We'd be, we'd be in the studio, you know, recording all the arrangements, and they'd be...who knows where, doing God knows what.
EDDIE: Every day, they'd come in with something new.
KAREN: I mean, great fucking songs.
EDDIE: And every night, they'd come in giggling like two little schoolgirls.
STELLA: It kinda felt like they had their own little secret that no one else knew about. And, honestly, I didn't want to know what it was.
✯✯✯
While the band was practicing in the studio, Daisy and Billy came in laughing. "And then, I mean, I mean, that's exactly what he said," Billy said, obviously telling her something they'd been talking about before arriving.
"Bullshit," Daisy replied.
"No, I swear, I swear on my life!"
"Bullshit!" She said again as the two laughed more and more, the band just silent as they watched them.
"What? It's not that funny," he spoke through his laughter.
✯✯✯
INTERVIEWER: Did it concern you?
GRAHAM: Not really. Not yet, anyway. I mean...like, whatever they were doing...(shrugs) it was working.
STELLA: Yes, it did concern me. Especially after Billy already cheated on Camila not once, but a few times before she found out. I wanted to trust him and Daisy, especially Daisy, but I just...I didn't want him to hurt Cami again (frowns).
✯✯✯
They played the song that Daisy and Billy had written before Daisy interrupted them. "It's not right. It doesn't sound good. It needs to sound — It sounds too nice. It needs to sound swampy."
"Swampy?" Eddie repeated.
"Do you know what I mean? It needs to sound swampier," she shouted to Billy, who'd been watching through the window.
"Uh...Ride the toms instead of the high-hat. Eddie, longer notes," Billy instructed through the intercom.
"All right." The band started up again, but this time the way how Billy told them to do it.
Daisy nodded along, looking back at Billy with approval written in her face. "Great. Was that so hard?" She asked, making the band stop playing.
"I guess he speaks Daisy now," Eddie commented, referring to Billy.
Warren chuckled, "Swampy."
"Swampy!" Eddie repeated in a funny voice, looking in Stella's direction in hopes of making her laugh since they hadn't really spoken real conversations in a while, but she hadn't found any of it funny.
In fact, the entire thing just felt so weird to her. Billy had been way too happy recently and it had all started when Daisy and him wrote their first song together. Don't get her wrong, she liked when Billy hadn't been his grumpy self but she didn't like the reason behind it if it was something that had to do with infidelity.
She liked Daisy a lot since the two agreed on many things, but if she had been doing stuff with Billy, she wasn't sure if she could like the girl. But she didn't want to jump to conclusions since it was perfectly fine if they were just friends, but she just found it weird.
And she knew the others had to have found it a bit weird, too, but no one wanted to say anything since they were actually getting things done without as many heated arguments.
✯✯✯
GRAHAM: Yeah, we knew it was good.
BILLY: Teddy, was th-the most confident.
WARREN: Here's how confident Teddy was: Before we even finished recording, he calls in a favor at Rolling Stone.
JONAH BERG (journalist/author The Rise of Daisy Jones): It was only my fifth assignment. Had the magazine thought more of The Six at the time, they would've sent someone else.
DAISY: Look, I know that I said that I would tell you everything...but how much of everything do you really wanna know?
INTERVIEWER: And what were you doing, while all this was happening?
CAMILA: Oh, I was busy raising a child. Pretty much...(sucks in a breath) all by myself.
✯✯✯
"What'd he look like?" Karen asked after Camila had gotten done telling her and Stella about how a guy tried to ask her out. Camila thought it would be nice if they had a little girls night, just drinking and smoking. Well, not a full girls night; Daisy hadn't been there.
"What does that even have to do with anything?" Camila questioned with a laugh.
"I don't know. I'm just painting a picture in my mind," Karen grinned.
"Yeah, was he hot?" Stella went straight to the point and all of them giggled.
"It just felt nice to speak Spanish," Camila shrugged. "You know, and just...to not feel like a mom for thirty seconds of my life."
"If you want, I could learn Spanish so we could chat," Stella offered before taking a sip of her beer.
Camila laughed softly. "You don't have to do that. And Warren can already speak it so if I'm really desperate, I could just go to him." Stella nodded at that, hoping that she would use that option more since the woman seemed a bit sad about not speaking as much Spanish anymore.
"How's things with you and the boss?" Karen inquired after a moment, earning a glance from Stella.
"Oh, you know," she yawned, "fine, I guess. He's never really here, and even when he is, he's not, like...here, you know?"
"Well, the songs are really good," Karen voiced with a smile, trying to change the subject since she could tell Camila felt weird about the topic.
"But that's another fucking thing," Camila leaned in, making Karen's smile drop and for Stella's eyebrows to raise. "I haven't even heard the songs yet. When you guys were making the first album, I felt like I was a part of it, somehow."
"Like the honorary sixth member," Stella breathed out, remembering how Camila came up with that compromise since she and Billy had been arguing; she should have known from that moment that she and her would become good friends.
"Yeah," Camila nodded. "Maybe I just...need something of my own, you know?"
Karen began to nod. "Yeah."
"Anyway...how are you and Graham?" Camila questioned and Stella's eyes widened, immediately looking at Karen who seemed shocked as well.
"Wait, what? He told you?!" Karen exclaimed and Stella's mouth dropped, her suspicions being confirmed that something had been going on.
"I've known Graham since he's 17 years old, okay? I've never seen him smile this much in his life," Camila pointed out.
"I literally cannot believe this," Stella breathed out.
"We're just having fun," Karen assured them, shaking her head.
"Just? Why just?" Camila pried, sharing an entertained expression with the Stone girl.
Karen scoffed, "Oh, God."
"You like him, though? Yeah, you like him."
"Yeah. Yeah, I do like him," Karen admitted.
"And...he loves you," Camila told her.
"No, he doesn't," Karen denied.
"Karen."
"Please don't tell anyone," the Sirko girl pleaded.
"I would never," Camila promised.
"Oh, me neither. As long as you tell us how it happened," Stella teased and Camila nodded eagerly.
Karen rolled her eyes at them. "No. No way. Can we please stop talking about this and talk about something else, like, I don't know, Stella's love life?"
"My love life?" Stella repeated, arching a brow.
"You make a good point actually," Camila agreed. "Any guys catch your eye recently, Miss Stone?"
Stella gave them a look. "No. I've honestly been so busy with the album that I haven't had time to put myself out there," she stated, which had been the truth. She just didn't want to mention what happened with Eddie, especially since the two had barely been speaking now.
"Really? Not even with Eddie?" Karen asked, which made Camila's eyebrows raise with interest.
Stella's stomach dropped. Eddie didn't tell her what happened, did he? She thought worriedly, but she decided to play dumb. "Me and Eddie? Why would you think that?" She queried nonchalantly.
Karen shrugged. "I don't know. You two have always just seemed so close, but now I feel like you guys haven't been talking a lot. I was wondering if something happened."
Okay, so she doesn't know. Thank God. Stella began to shake her head, continuing the lie. "I mean, yeah, Eddie and I are close but we're just friends. And I guess the reason for not speaking a lot is just because we're focused on the songs. Eddie wants to impress Billy and, honestly, I just want to make sure I do everything correctly. I haven't really noticed that we haven't been talking, so you just reminded I probably should."
"So there isn't anything going on with you and Eddie?" Camila spoke curiously.
"No. Guys and girls can be friends without it being romantic, and that's exactly what we are," she told them, lying through her teeth. "I mean, would I ever consider hooking up with him? Maybe if I was blackout drunk." Another lie. "Does he feel the same? Most definitely." Another lie.
Camila nodded before she finished her drink. "Ah, shit. I'm gonna go to the bathroom and get another drink. Be right back." She got up from her seat and went inside, leaning the two girls there.
"So, what do you think about Billy and Daisy?" Stella immediately asked Karen so she wouldn't press her further with more questions about Eddie.
Karen sighed. "I honestly don't know. They're making great fucking songs so I can't complain, but if something else is going on..."
"Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about it. Like I just said, guys and girls can be friends without it being romantic—"
"Like you and Eddie," Karen interrupted, still having an inkling that something happened and Stella was trying to cover it up.
"Yes, like me and Eddie," she confirmed slowly, narrowing her eyes slightly. "But Billy just seems different around her," she continued her sentence from before. "I just hope he doesn't hurt Cami again."
"Yeah. That would honestly suck," Karen shook her head before placing a cigarette in between her lips and blowing out some smoke. "But are you sure there isn't anything going on between you and Eddie?"
Stella scoffed at her. "Yes, Karen, I'm sure. Why do you keep asking?"
She shrugged. "I don't know. I just thought there was a spark there or something."
"A spark? Seriously?"
"Yes, a spark. Like, a connection," Karen explained.
Stella rolled her eyes and shook her head, "You're drunk."
"I am, but drunk words are sober thoughts, you know?" She joked, causing the both of them to laugh. "I'm just saying, I think there may be something there. It wouldn't hurt to try. And you can just keep it secret like Graham and I, and have all the fun you want."
Stella thought about it, Karen's words putting everything into perspective for her. Did she and Eddie really have a spark? Would they make a good couple? The blonde wasn't sure, but now Karen's words had gotten her to think more and more about it.
"Sounds tempting, but I think I'll pass," Stella brushed it off jokingly, even though she wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to pass up on it, before practically chugging on the rest of her beer.
