March To the Sea
There's miles of land in front of us.
And we're dying with every step we take
We're dying with every breath we make
And I'll fall in line
A young man, barely near the age of 21 walked off the boardwalk and into the sand.
It was a cloudy and gloomy day. The man remember hearing the weather man warning everyone to stay indoors because of an upcoming storm.
But he don't mind. The young man was dirty blond. He also had blue eyes matching the sea in front of him, blue, deep and dull. If you were to see the man in the street he would normally wear a bomber Jacket over his shirt. But today the man left the Jacket in his closet. He decided to wear a black t-shirt and jeans just like anyone else around his age.
But he was different. He may look to be around the age of 18 but he was much older. 240 years to be exact. The man has seen many things in his life, war, famine. Poverty and most of all death.
In face he seen it everyday after all he is the personification of the United State. But when asked on the street he will claim his name is Alfred.
Alfred looked up from the sand. In front of him was another man. Automatically Alfred knew his name.
Fred Jones, age 32, currently unemployed as of yesterday and is single also as of yesterday. How comical the young man shared the same last name as him and is about to do the same thing.
A stranger's back is all I see
He's only a few feet in front of me
And I'll look left and right sometime.
But I'll fall in line.
This ocean is quiet popular. The police wanted to close it but due to the ocean being the only attractions in the small town they let it open.
There's a small legend in this town. It said thoes who march to the sea will be given a great blessing, freedom and happyness. Of course Alfred knows that's not true. But he still March anyway.
Fred on the other hand do as he walked into the ocean until Alfred could no longer see him.
Alfred looked up as he felt something wet hit his hair. Rain. The weather man was right for once. It's raining.
The sky is crying. Alfred wanted to cry too. But he need to be brave for this journey .
But Alfred knows that he is not a brave man. It is because he is not brave that he is walking.
No one looks up anymore.
Cause you might get a raindrop in your eyes.
And heaven forbits to see you cry.
And we fall in line.
He knows that he is a flawed person. After all he's only one man. Everyone else has flaws why is his such a sin?
They call him many things. They enjoy making fun of him. They like watching him suffer.
Alfred don't know why.
Maybe because he's young and manage to do things that take the others centuries to do.
Maybe it's his army.
His money
His power.
Sure he may have a lot of power but he tries his best to keep it up on a small level.
And about this time of every year
This line will go to the ocean pier
And walk right off into the sea
And then we'll fall asleep .
Alfred is tired of hearing complaints.
He's tired of being a hero.
He's just plan tired.
Please allow him to sleep. It's only fair.
He was so close. So close to the ocean.
Just one more.
One more step and it will all be over.
And as we near the end of land
And our ocean graves are just beyond the sand
I asked myself the question why
Do I fall in line.
Why?
Haven't he mention it before.
He wants a way to escape.
But...
This can't be the only way right.
And then out of the corner of my eyes
I see a spaceship in the sky
And hear a voice inside my head
'Follow me instead '
'Follow me instead'
'Follow me instead'
'Follow me instead'
'Follow me'
"Tony" Alfred breath out.
Tony is his alien friends that he saved from his government from long ago. But why is he here? Alfred remember watching Tony leave for a family gathering. Why is he here?
The spaceship landed right by Alfred as the door opened up.
"Come back." Tony said.
Then the wages of war will start
Inside my head with my counterpart
And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase.
This line the only way.
Should he?
And then I stare down at the sand
My eyes are focused on the end of land
But then the voice inside my said said.
"Follow me instead."
Alfred bit his lips. He's so close, yet he is so far.
'Follow me instead '
If he goes back. Then he will suffer.
'Follow me'
Alfred felt fear rising up his throat. He can no longer think what is right for him.
'Follow me instead '
'Follow me instead'
'Follow me instead '
'Follow me instead
'Follow me instead'
Alfred sigh as the last raindrop fell. He turned around and face the spaceship.
Take me up. Seal the door
I don't want to March here anymore
I realized this line is dead
So I'll follow you instead.
Tony pat him on the back. "Good to have you back." He said. Alfred weakly smiled and nod.
'So you put me back in my place'
'So I might start another day.'
Tony took his to one of the room and lead Alfred to the bed. Alfred only state at the window glaring at the ocean that almost took his life.
'And once again I will be
On a March to the sea.'
"Tony let's go home."
