Week Two Prompts
Wednesday March 8th - Wednesday March 15th
(I'm posting this early so everyone can get a head start)
Here we are! Another week and more poems to write! Who's having fun? I hope everyone is enjoying the prompts so far! This week we have some interesting International Days so hang onto your hats and make sure you have your reading glasses on, 'cause here we go!
Prompt One: World Sleep Day! (Celebrated March 18th)
Ahh, sleep... I wish I knew what that was! I don't get much sleep these days, so can someone please tell me what it is and what it feels like? I'd love to know! For this prompt, you'll be writing your poems as an Acrostic. Yep, a good ol' acrostic for good ol' sleep. Basic, but powerful and meaningful, much like sleep. Cause see, all you do is close your eyes... and count sheep... and think about life's stresses... then realize you're hungry and... okay never mind!
In case you don't know what this poetry style is, have no fear, Mickey is here! To write this poem, the first letter from each word is used to create a phrase. Read vertically is the word, and reading across is the phrase that starts with the letter that helps make up the word.
Still confused because I suck at explaining? Don't fret over there, here's an example:
Prompt Two: International Day of Happiness! (Celebrated March 20th)
What a wonderful day to celebrate! I'm sure we all have many things to be happy about. I bet if you get enough sleep you're very happy too! Don't freak out, you don't need to talk about sleep here as well, though now I'm getting tired... maybe this is a good thing?
I digress! For this poem please write it as a List Poem. For this style, it's simple, all you do is make up a list of things or items. They don't follow any strict rules, though the last line is often funny and/or impactful and sums up the entire poem. So make up a list of all the things that bring you joy! I'll be waiting to see myself on everyone's list ;)
I'm joking... seriously don't give me any attention, I'm shy!
Here's a little example to help ya out:
Prompt Three: World Storytelling Day! (Celebrated March 20th)
Last but not least! Storytelling! Ahh, this is amazing I love that we get to write poems about this. How very fitting! Why am I so excited about this?! I really need a life.
For this great day, I would like you to write the poem as an Epic. These poems are usually really...well... EPIC! I'll explain:
Epic poetry refers to very long poems which tell a story. They contain detailed adventures and extraordinary feats performed by (they can be real or fictional) characters who are often from a distant past. The term 'epic' was derived from the accomplishments, adventures, and bravado of these poems. Homer's The Iliad and Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queen are famous epics that are often studied the most. It doesn't have to rhyme, and there are no set rules for this poem.
Now I know what you're thinking, "Mickey, this seems long and complicated!" To which I say, "Yeah, it kinda is!" But there's no need to write a ten-page epic poem (actually please, do NOT do that to me...). Just write me a poem about an adventure. It can be something metaphoric, or something very simplistic, up to you. Just transport the reader into a magical storytelling experience, but don't make it more than 200 words please :)
Here's an example of an Epic for all my visual learners out there:
Well, folks, that's it! If you noticed, I skipped a bunch of days in March because there are not many International celebrations on those days, and the few that do exist are a bit... silly! Anyhoo, I'm very excited to see what you all come up with! If you have anything at all to ask me, or say, please let me know and I'll be happy to help!
P.S: Please listen to the song I linked above. It'll get your happy juices flowing!
Good luck!
