12: Remus Lupin - An Unbreakable Bond Part One
Warning! This is part one of two!
House: Slytherin
- Flashback -
"Remus! You can't go yet!" I cried to my best friend, holding onto his arm. He had received a visit from the infamous Professor Dumbledore, head of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, offering Remus a place there. When Remus showed me the letter Dumbledore had given to him there was a bright smile on his face, him admitting that he didn't think he'd be accepted due to his lycanthropy. I was however two years younger than him which of course meant that Remus would be going to Hogwarts before me.
"(y/n) you know I have to go," he smiled, pulling me in for a hug which I happily reciprocated.
"But I'll miss you! Can't I go with you?" I begged.
"You'll be able to go in two years! But I'll miss you too," he mumbled and I smiled. I had grown a silly little crush on Remus Lupin, despite only being nine.
"I'll miss you too... promise you'll write to me!" I said quickly and he chuckled, nodding.
"Absolutely, I promise."
- Flashback Over -
I clutched onto the letters Remus and I had sent each other all throughout his first two years at Hogwarts. Now I was waiting at Kings Cross in London with my parents, my trunk and owl on a trolley. We were waiting for the Lupins to arrive, Remus having promised to sit with me during my first ride on the Hogwarts Express. "Remus!" I called out to him when I saw him. He waved back, him and his parents approaching me. Together we all went through the wall between platform nine and ten, which revealed platform nine and three quarters where a ruby red train sat.
"Welcome to the Hogwarts Express," Remus said and I smiled brightly.
"I can't wait, this is going to be amazing," I said brightly, glad I could finally attend boarding school with the boy I loved.
"Have you got everything?" My parents asked protectively.
"Yeah mum! I'll miss you both," I hugged my parents, waving to them as I followed Remus onto the train. We walked through the thin corridor, Remus holding my hand as he led the way. He looked through every window of each compartment, no doubt looking for his friends. Finally he stopped outside of one and I peeked in, seeing three boys sat in an already messy looking compartment.
"Moony!" One of them, a boy with shoulder-length black hair exclaimed as he opened the door.
"Hey Sirius," Remus smiled, stepping into the compartment and pulling me in behind him. "Guys, I want you to meet (y/n), my friend from home," he said, stepping aside to let me properly see everyone. Sat on the left there was a boy with black messy hair and glasses whilst on the right there was a fairly round boy with mousy hair.
"Hello," I mumbled politely, waving.
"Hey, you're the girl Remus always talks about!" The one Remus called Sirius said and my eyes widened. "The name's Sirius Black," he said, holding out his hand for me to shake which I of course did.
"And I'm James, James Potter," the guy with glasses said.
"A-and I'm Peter!" The round boy chipped in eagerly.
"Hello, it's nice to meet you all," I said with a smile.
"C'mon then (y/n), take a seat, the train will be setting off in a minute," Sirius gestured the seat opposite him, next to Peter. Remus sat close to me on my other side, smiling at me reassuringly. I spotted my parents through the window and waved to them just as the train started to move bidding them a final farewell.
I was a little nervous in the company of the boys, but due to the fact it was a seven hour train ride I got to know them pretty well. They were all such fun, and each of them were exactly how Remus had described them to me when he came back during the holidays. I soon became friendly with the three others, them plus Remus making my first trip to Hogwarts memorable.
They told me all about the Professors and the lessons, about the castle and Hogsmeade, it all seeming so exciting. I was beaming brightly by the time the train arrived at Hogsmeade Station, and I couldn't help but pout as the boys told me they had to go to the horseless carriages whilst I, being a first year, had to go to the boats. Still I hugged Remus goodbye, waved to the other three and made my way to the boats, meeting a few other first years whilst there.
The castle was magnificent, my eyes wide as we were led through the stone corridors towards two large, decorative oak doors. When they opened I saw a giant hall which I assumed was the Great Hall the boys told me about on the journey up. As we walked in I saw there were four long tables running down the majority of the hall, each filled with students. I managed to spot Remus and the others on the Gryffindor table, them dressed in their smart robes. I waved enthusiastically to my friend who laughed and waved back.
When we reached the front of the hall there was a bother long table standing perpendicular to the others in the room. This table had numerous adults sat at it, me assuming that they were all our professors. In front of us there was a small stool with an old hat sat upon it, and a lady in green robes standing next to it. "My name is Professor McGonagall. When I call out your name you will approach, I will place this hat upon your head and you'll be sorted into your house. Now then,"
She began calling out names, and I began to feel incredibly nervous. Chills ran down my spine when she called out my name, and she gently placed the hat on my head. I looked out towards the rest of the students sat down at their respective tables and spotted Remus, who was looking at me with a smile on his face. "Slytherin!" The hat cried out after a moment, and I stood up excitedly, heading over to the correct table. I looked back across the room towards Remus and waved again, but there was a look of uncertainty on his face as he waved back. His three friends didn't do anything, and simply stared at me in a way that made me feel nervous. I decided to just sit down and make friends with my various housemates, as I knew I'd find Remus to talk to tomorrow.
When the feast was over, the house prefects directed the first years to the common rooms, the Slytherins being down several flights of stairs towards what seemed to be the old dungeons of the castle. "Wasn't this castle always a school, even when it was built? Why did they need dungeons...?" I questioned a new friend of mine, (f/n).
"I have no idea... slightly worrying though," she laughed awkwardly, looking at the chains that hung from the ceiling. The prefects stopped outside a bare stretch of stone wall, and muttered a word that sounded like it was in Latin. A door then formed against the stone, and the prefects ushered us inside.
The common room was stunning - it had beautiful elegant leather sofas, a large fireplace with decorative stone snakes running up the sides of it, a large mirror hanging above it and several large tables with chairs that had firm, tall backs. On the far side there were very long windows which seemed to look out into a large body of water, it presumably being the Black Lake. I could see a large variety of fish swimming around, as well as a few magical creatures. On the journey up Sirius even told me about a giant squid that was rumoured to habit the lake, and it made me wonder whether we'd be able to see that too. The prefects then continued to lead us through some corridors towards our dorm rooms, and I found my luggage waiting for me on my mahogany four poster bed, the posts being intricately designed snakes.
"This is amazing," I said brightly, collapsing onto my large bed. I got to know the other girls in my dorm, only briefly though as we were all incredibly tired and decided we needed our rest ready for our first day of school the next day.

It had been a busy first week at Hogwarts, (f/n) and I spending time exploring the castle whenever we weren't in class, eating or doing homework. We had almost been caught by prefects twice already, but we had managed to run away before they found us. The only sad thing was that I barely had a chance to talk or see Remus, so when the first weekend of term came around I decided to approach him at the Gryffindor table. "Remus!" I called out to my best friend and crush, him sitting with his three close friends who I hadn't managed to speak to since the train ride up.
"Hi (y/n)," Remus said, turning to me with a sweet smile.
"Hello everyone," I greeted everyone else. I felt a little awkward when James and Sirius simply sent me a glare.
"H-hi (y/n)," Peter stuttered, but I decided to turn my attention back to Remus and not think too much about their weird behaviour.
"Fancy spending the day together? I've waited two years to finally be at Hogwarts with you and we've barely had a chance to see each other! C'mon, I want you to show me your favourite parts of the castle!" I said excitedly and it warmed my heart when he smiled and stood up.
"Sure, let's go."
"Have you finished breakfast though? I don't want to drag you away if you're still eating," i said sweetly.
"No it's okay, I'll grab something for the road," he reached over a few plates to grab a slice of buttered toast. "I'll show you around."
"'Kay!" I said happily, following his lead.
"How've you settled in so far?" He asked, munching on his toast.
"Oh it's been amazing, the Slytherin common room is stunning!" I praised, a smile never leaving my face however I saw his falter.
"Really? What's it like?" He asked.
"Well it's under the Black Lake to begin with, through the windows you can see all the amazing creatures that live in it. And there's a huge fireplace with large snakes carved out of stone surrounding it. Oh, and my bed is so comfy! I love it Remus, it's all so cool," I clapped my hands together as he led me down a corridor towards a flight of stairs.
"Huh, that sounds... Slytherin," he said and I laughed.
"I wonder why," I said sarcastically. He had already told me what the Gryffindor common room was like, and the two did sound very different but both nice in their own right. I started telling him about how I was finding my classes, and he began showing me his favourite parts of the castle. We went up to the astronomy tower, we went to the library, the kitchens and even the edge of the Black Lake outside. "Remus, why did James and Sirius ignore me earlier?" I asked and he stiffened up slightly.
"They've just had a bit of a rough week - already had two detentions each," he said but a part of me thought he was lying. I decided not to question it though and carried on speaking to him casually like we always did, just feeling happy that we could finally attend Hogwarts together. He helped me with some of my homework in the library but I just felt so happy to be back by his side, in an environment where we could hang out everyday like we used to.
As time went on however, I noticed slight differences in him. I knew him so well that I could pick up on even the slightest of changes in his personality that a normal friend may not have noticed. Still I kept on smiling when in his presence, unable to stop myself from doing so whenever I was in his presence due to my feelings for him. His friends however acted odd around me, barely talking to me and only sending me the odd glance - it was very different then how they were on the train. Peter was the only one who spoke to me out of the three, but even then I thought it was just for Remus' sake. "Remus?" I asked as we walked along the side of the Black Lake one spring afternoon, my first year at Hogwarts almost coming to an end.
"Yeah?" He asked, his hands in his pockets as he kicked the stones under our feet.
"Your friends don't like me very much, do they," I said, knowing it was the truth and wondering whether he could give me a solid reason. He stiffened slightly, it being so subtle that only a true friend of his would notice.
"They just don't know you," he shrugged, trying to play it off.
"That's a lie. On my first train ride to Hogwarts I got to know all three of them, and they were so friendly to me, but by the end of the first week they tried to pretend like I didn't exist. Not only that but I've been in your company so much that there were so many opportunities for them to talk to me like I tried with them, but they never listened. They'd sometimes literally turn their backs on me," I said sadly.
"I'm sorry (y/n)... I don't really know why they act like that," Remus said sadly.
"Could you maybe talk to them? Tell them that I am a nice person, and I'd like to be their friend," I said, stopping and grabbing my best friends hand. A small and sweet smile appeared on his face which made my heart melt.
"Sure I can," he said, pulling me in for a hug. I snuggled against his chest, adoring the feeling of his arms around me. It was thanks to Remus and his help that my first year at Hogwarts was so much fun - I didn't doubt it was going to be amazing but now that I was here with Remus it felt so much better.

It was the beginning of second year for me, meaning it was fourth year for Remus. Our summer had been exactly how it usually was, however as soon as we were back there was something different about Remus. For starters he wouldn't let me ride in the same compartment as him and his friends which hurt a little, so I instead went to find (f/n) to catch up.
During the first few weeks of second year Remus was exactly how he always was, however as the months went on he slowly began to drift away from me. Just like before it was only subtle differences in his behaviour, but he soon started blowing off meeting up with me altogether. Our weekend trips to the library had been cancelled many times, and sometimes he wouldn't even show up without telling me prior. Not only that but his friends were sending me dirtier and dirtier looks the more times I went to try and speak to Remus.
It wasn't as if he was ignoring me completely, but we definitely weren't meeting up as often as we used to. Each time we saw each other I felt compelled to ask, but I never actually built up the confidence to do so. "Remus!" I called out to him as he sat on the top of the astronomy. He turned and smiled at me sweetly, as I sat down beside him. "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," he let out a sigh.
"Full moon tomorrow," I observed, looking up at the almost complete moon that shone down on the castle. He leant back and sighed loudly.
"I'm tired of being alone, (y/n)," he mumbled and I clutched his hand.
"You're never alone so long as you have me," I said reassuringly and he smiled.
"Thanks (y/n). Don't know what I'd do without you," he chuckled. We spent time sat there, up on the astronomy tower simply talking. I adored times alone with him like this and time always seemed to run away from us. We'd sit there for hours, laughing and talking away about anything that came to our minds, and it was times like this when I felt at my happiest.
When the full moon came and went, I couldn't see Remus sat at the Gryffindor table at breakfast. Concerned about him, I walked over to where his friends were sitting. "Erm..." I voiced my presence and their conversation ceased immediately as they turned to look at me. "Where's Remus?"
"Why would we tell you?" Sirius asked gruffly and I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Because he and I are best friends," I said firmly, folding my arms.
"Pfft, yeah right," James scoffed and anger surged through me.
"Just tell me if he's alright!" I yelled, stomping my foot.
"H-he's fine-," Peter tried to stutter before he was interrupted by Sirius.
"There's nothing a Slytherin like you could do for him, run back to the other snakes," he stood up, punching the table. I knew of their 'rivalry' with a few of the Slytherins in their year, but I figured it was simply a clash of personalities, or the houses classic competitiveness at Quidditch but it seemed as though Sirius had an issue with all Slytherins. Everything fell into place as I realised that must be the reason the three despised me so much, and it was simply because of the colour of my tie.
"How dare you, he's my best friend-,"
"We're the ones caring for him, not you!" James shouted, standing up also. The anger on their faces seemed a little threatening, causing me to back down but I knew I had to see Remus as soon as possible - I wasn't going to let his friends keep him from me.

As second year rolled into third, I began to notice serious changes in Remus. He now almost always blew me off, most of the time without telling me. I'd be sat waiting for him in the library on the table we always sat at, or on top of the astronomy tower where we always hung out but he'd rarely show. When we passed in corridors I tried to stop him for a conversation, or I at least tried to wave but a lot of the time he'd look at me then quickly glance away. My heart was hurting as the boy I had feelings for ignored me more and more with each passing day, and I couldn't think of a single reason as to why he was acting such a way.
I voiced my feelings to (f/n) one evening as we sat in our dorm room, just the pair of us. I told her about how insulted I felt, and she could tell it was making me depressed. "I bet his friends put him up to it," she said and I furrowed my eyebrows.
"What?"
"I bet his friends are the reason he's stopped talking to you. You know how much they hate Slytherins after all," she said with a huff.
"No, Remus would never listen to propaganda like that... he's more sensible than that," I said and she sighed.
"Then you think of a reason," she suggested and I sighed. "You need to confront him (y/n), just talk to him and see what he has to say for himself."
I nodded at her suggestion, knowing it was probably the right thing to do, so I decided to put the plan into action the very next day. I was fuelled by anger and desperation to know what's gotten him acting this way, so when I was walking with (f/n) to breakfast and I saw him in the entrance hall, I found myself storming up to him. "Remus Lupin!" I cried out loudly, making him jump and whirl around.
"(y/n), what do you want?" He asked dismissively, it seeming as though he was insulted at the fact I was talking to him. His friends stood behind him, smirking.
"I want you to tell me why you've been ignoring me! Why you've been avoiding me at almost every opportunity!" I cried out, ignoring the audience we had.
"I'm not in the mood for this now (y/n)," he said, about to walk to the doors of the great hall but I stopped him.
"Well tough! I want an answer, now!" I shouted.
"Just leave me alone! I've got my O.W.Ls to deal with, I don't want you leeching onto me as well!" He shouted, anger in his usually calm eyes. "Now go away, I'm busy," he pushed past me physically, his friends following behind him. (f/n) ran over to me to make sure I was okay, but I was far from it. It felt as though I had just been stabbed directly in the heart, my feelings for him pouring out of me like blood. Suddenly I didn't feel so hungry for breakfast and instead found myself running up to the astronomy tower, telling (f/n) that I needed some alone time. When I was sat at the top of the tower, I found tears leaking from my eyes unwillingly as I thought about the boy I had feelings for, the boy I thought was my best friend and the boy who had just shouted at me, practically telling me he didn't want me in his life anymore.
I ended up sitting at the top of the tower all day, (f/n) bringing me food during breaks. I didn't bother to go back downstairs until it had almost reached curfew, and over the next couple of days I found myself hurting more and more particularly when I saw that he didn't appear to regret a single word he had said to me.
