My heart was full of joy and love as gazed at my squirming kits. I had just kitted them about half a moon ago, and what a struggle it was. I purred and gently nudged one of my kits. I had given them very unique names. Proudkit; for the fact that both Appledusk and I are extremely proud of our halfclan kits, Bravekit; for the bravery that Appledusk had to bring a Thunderclan cat with his kits to RiverClan, and my own bravery to leave my home and everything I had ever known, and lastly Lovekit; for the strong and beautiful love we shared. I knew that Appledusk would approve. I was then startled by a loud squeak.
"Mama?"
I looked down to see Lovekit staring straight at me with her giant dark blue eyes.
"Ah you've opened your eyes! Wonderful. Now stay here mommy's gonna go check something really quick!"I purred.
"Okay."
I stood up and padded away from my kits, and peered out from the entrance of the den. The guard was no were to be seen.
Here's my chance!
I plucked up my kits one by one in my jaws. This was extremely hard to do; it was like trying to carry three, live, mice, very frustrating. They kept moving and yelping as I tried to adjust them.
"Mama! What are we doing?"Bravekit squawked, eyes still closed.
"We're going to see your father."I meowed absentmindedly, removing my jaw from Bravekit's scruff and setting the kits down.
"Our father? Isn't our dad Ryefeather?"Pridekit inquired.
I sighed."No, he isn't,"I dismissed my kits' shock with a flick of my tail."Your father is a Riverclan tom named Appledusk."
"So we're halfclan?"Bravekit gasped.
"Does this mean we'll have to leave the clans and become rouges?" Lovekit cried.
After Lovekit's outburst, all of my kits started whining.I quickly hushed them."No, no, no, my lovelies! We'll go to RiverClan and meet your dad! You'll become the best warriors, I promise."
The kits' whimpering died down and soon they began to slumber. I purred. I had kept them up almost all night, so now they needed a long nap.
Once I was situated, I darted out of the nursery, surprisingly quiet. My paws thumped against the ground and my tail trailed wildly behind me. The kittens were still fast asleep.
Good.
"Halt! Who goes there?"
I froze in my tracks. I didn't try to hide the misery and fear in my gaze when I turned around.
I've been caught!
"Mapleshade? Where are you going with the kits?"
It's Firepoppy, my sister. Thank StarClan. She won't force me to go back to ThunderClan.
I stammered unintelligibly with the kits still in my mouth," G—just g—going on a litt—little moonlit walk."
The dark ginger she-cat narrowed her green eyes,"So you're just carrying them?"
"They got tired and—"
"Stop lying Mapleshade! I'm your littermate! Why can't you trust me?"
Because you are the Clan deputy, and you want Mousestar to trust you so you could carry out your dirty deeds.
I sighed, my head dipped in shame,"These kits aren't Ryefeather's."
I ignored the shocked gasp Firepoppy produced,"They belong to a RiverClan tom. I belong with him, that's where I'm going."
I finally gathered up enough courage to look my sister in the eyes, which were blazing,"You know I have to alert the Clan, right?"
"I know,"
Firepoppy unexpectedly licked my ear goodbye,"Be careful. I love you."
I blinked in surprise," I—I love you too!"
"I'm going to let you get a head start,"She went on,"I'll try to stall them if they already realize you are missing."
"Thank you,"I murmured, and disappeared into the bushes.
I was running as fast as my legs could carry me. My neck hurt, but I pushed forward. I just had to make it to the river . . .
A furious yowl split the air,"There she is! Get her!"
Shoot! How did they catch up so quickly?
I could now hear the thudding of paws on the ground and the rustling of plants. The cats I had grown up with were chasing me down, ready to slice open my throat if they had to. I had no idea what they would do to me if they caught me. I wasn't about to find out!
"Mapleshade!" Firepoppy blasted out of the ferns in front of me and blocked my path.
"What are you doing? They're going to catch me!"I squealed like a kit, terrified.
My sister snarled, amused,"That's kinda the point."
My insides started to boil when I finally realized which side the flame colored she-cat was on.
Traitor!
I impulsively raked my claws through her throat. Her eyes widened until I could see the whites around them, and she crumpled into a pool of blood that matched her pelt. Without a second thought, I leaped over her body.
The river! It's right there!
When my paws landed on the first stepping stone, I cautiously released my kits and turned around to face the bristling ThunderClan cats.
"You are a disgrace to our Clan!" Screeched Ivyblaze.
"Wretch!" Cried out Badgerfall.
Mousestar padded forward, Firepoppy's bloody corpse was hanging from his jaws,"You killed her! She was going to be my mate! I'm going to rip off your legs and beat you with them!"
"You should be thanking me!"I yowled back," She was going to kill you!"
The sky suddenly let out a fearsome roar, there was great blast of white light, leaving every cat temporarily blind. Rain started to cascade down from the black clouds high above. I wasted no time plucking up my terrified kits. Once we were in RiverClan, we would be safe. I could almost feel Appledusk's soft, thick, and pale brown fur wrapped around me and the kits. My forepaw's hit the next stone. My hindpaws did not.
I was under the swift and swirling water in mere heartbeats, my kits's scruffs were ripped out of my mouth. I broke the surface of the raging river, coughing.
"Kits? Kits!"I screamed.
A small head was bobbing up and down wildly a tail-length in front of me. It was Pridekit!
With all my might, I swam to him."Pridekit?"
His green eyes were clouded with exhaustion. He tried to speak, but water flooded into his mouth.
"Mama!"
Lovekit!
The tiny she-cat was hanging from an old gnarled tree root that was hanging over the river, Bravekit was holding on to her.
"Don't worry, I'm coming!"I called, and grabbed Pridekit by the neck.
When we made it to the root, I tried to place Pridekit on land, but he was too heavy and he slipped out of my jaws. He was swept away with one tiny squeal.
No! Pridekit, no!
There was a splash and a screech, and Bravekit disappeared into the dark waters."MAMA!"
I had to save Lovekit. She was all I had left! I clambered up onto the shore, and reached for my smallest kit. Lovekit let out a wail, and dropped into the slurping currents.
I threw my head my head back and let out a cry so painful and raw that it could unsettle even the most cold hearted warrior.
The reeds rustled behind me, and a light brown tabby tom exploded out. It was Appledusk! I must be on RiverClan's side then. I rushed toward him.
Even though the rain flattened his fluffy fur, and darkened his pale pelt, he looked more beautiful than ever,"Appledusk! Our kits! Our kits!"
His green eyes were wide, he glanced back worriedly at the reeds,"Keep your voice down! What are you talking about? What kits?"
I almost wailed with dismay,"Our kits! Didn't you notice that I hadn't been meeting you at our usual place? That I stopped attending the Gatherings?"
Appledusk seemed dumbstruck,"Of—of course I noticed! I was worried! I didn't—you didn't tell me—"
"When my medicine cat realized I was expecting, she forced me to stay in the nursery, so I didn't get a chance."
I wanted to scream at him. Why was he acting this way? So unattached? I was expecting him to caress me with his big brown paws and tell me that everything would be okay.
"Where are the kits?"He demanded. His eyes . . . They looked . . . Horrified?
No, That can't be it. I must be going crazy.
I turned around to stare at the river, which had started to calm down. I realized that I was freezing cold, and I was shivering."They're . . . They are dead, they drowned!"
I waited for Appledusk to press himself against me and quietly morn with me, but that never happened.
When I looked up at him, I was confused to see relief in his eyes. He then glared suddenly down at me.
"You killed our kits by bringing them across the river! You drowned them! I never want to see you again!"
The world underneath my paws that made sense to me and comforted me shattered into a plethora of bits."Wh—what?"
"You heard me!"He scored his claws across my face,"Get out of here before I kill you!"
Bleeding, disoriented, and with my head still clouded with grief, I blundered away from him, and ran down the river bank. I mindlessly pushed through a clump of reeds and tripped. I bashed my head against something hard, a rock, and I mewled in pain. I was going insane, lying in that mud. I could hear voices, I recognized Appledusk's.
"Oh, there you are! Did you find out who screamed?" That wasn't Appledusk. It was a she-cat.
"Yes. It was some crazy old rouge. He kept talking about a yowling mouse."
"Where is he?"
"He fell in the river. I tried to save him, but it was too late."
"Oh, Appledusk. Don't beat yourself up about it. You are a great warrior, and I'm sure you'll make an even greater father to our kits!"
"Thank you, Moonstream."
The voices faded away, but my anger did not.
How dare he? He didn't care about me! He never loved me! He's glad my kits are dead! He won't have to worry about telling the Clan about me now!
My head was spinning, and I couldn't move. I felt something warm and sticky run down the back of my head. He thought he was safe, that I had ran away and would not return! Well, he was wrong!
I will have my revenge! Even after I utter my last breath, my burning vengeance will never die out!
