Nineteen
Eggsy was still reeling as he stepped into the Kingsman tailor shop. The blast of the gunshot echoing in his head, the screams from the church. Valentine's plan was horrific. The fact that phone chips could have such an affect on people was nauseating. He barely glanced at the clerk at the front desk as he stormed up the stairs. The doors to the meeting room was open as he turned the corner. Arthur visible at the head of the table in wait. Eggsy stopped, breath heaving his chest as he glanced around. He knew that the man would be there.
"Arthur, Harry's dead", his voice came out young and shocked.
"Galahad's dead. Hence we have just drank a toast to him", the white haired man corrected. he leaned back in his seat and gestured to the crystal tumbler of amber alcohol and the matching little glasses on the table.
"Well, then you know what that Psycho's doing. How many people round the world have got his SIM cards. Valentine can send a signal to any of them, all of them. If they all go homicidal at the same time then-"
"Indeed", Arthur interrupted. "And thanks to Galahad's recordings, we have Valentine's confession. The intelligence has been passed on to the relevant authorities. Our work is complete and a most distinguished legacy for our fallen friend, it is too".
Eggsy let his shoulder deflate. "And that's it?"
"Come sit down boy", Arthur gestured to the chair on his right. Eggsy slouched over and slumped into the seat. "This", Arthur gestured to the crystal tumbler. "Is an 1815 Napoleonic brandy, and we only drink it when we loose a kingsman". He leaned forwards to collect two glasses and pick up the brandy. The movement drew Eggsy's eye to the scar hiding behind the man's ear. Eggsy's eyes widened for the briefest second then he masked his expression, mind whirling. So this was why Neil was still missing. Arthur had probably been the one to give him up. Eggsy buried the anger in his stomach. This was the reason why Harry's dead and Neil was missing.
Arthur was still talking. "And on this occasion I think its an acceptable occasion for us to bend the rules a little since Galahad was so fond of you". The brandy swirled in the glasses as it was poured out.
Eggsy leaned across the table. "Are these all kingsman?"
The older man turned to the portraits that covered the green wallpaper. "Yes, those are founder members". Then he was turning back. "I want you to join me in a toast". A glass was set down in front of Eggsy. "To Galahad". And they were both lifting the glasses up to clink them together before raising them to their lips. Eggsy drunk the sliver of brandy in one swallow and placed the empty glass back on the table.
"Harry says that you don't like to break rules Arthur. Why now?" They both knew that he wasn't just talking about the brandy.
"You're very good Eggsy. Perhaps I will make you my proposal for Galahad's position, provided that we can see eye to eye on certain political matters". Arthur smirked then picked up the fountain pen that had been resting on the table. He flicked the clip down and held it up. "Can you guess what this is?"
"I don't have too. Harry showed me", Eggsy's eyes lingered on the pen before returning to the conversation. "You click it, I die. I thought that Brandy tasted a bit shit".
Arthur chuckled at the insult. "Bravo".
"Valentine won you over. Somehow".
"Once he explained, I understood". It sounded simple yet Eggsy couldn't fathom how someone could be so relaxed with mass genocide. "When you get a virus you get a fever. That's the human body raising it's core temperature to kill the virus. Planet earth works the same way. If we don't reduce our population ourselves, either the host kills the virus or the virus kills the host. The result is the same either way, the virus dies".
"So Valentine's gonna take care of the of the population problem himself?"
"Well if we don't do something, nature will. Sometimes a culling is the only way to ensure that this species survives and history will see Valentine as the man who saved humanity from extinction".
"And he gets to pick and choose who gets culled, does he?" Eggsy bit back. "All his rich mates get to live and anyone he thinks is worth saving, he's keeping them safe whether they agree with him or not. Is that where he took Agent Tristan?"
"Agent Tristan is infuriating but he is a good agent, I will say that about him. Unfortunately he is the last heir to a large and very important company so his father wants him contained and controlled a much as possible", Arthur stated without emotion. "I was going to let him die instead of Galahad but unfortunately Mr Draven is a old friend of mine and he doesn't want to raise another heir. So Agent Tristan is now under Valentine's care".
"Do you think Valentine is happy to be holding a Kingsman agent after what happened to Harry?" Eggsy asked.
"I am sure that he has the resources to keep Tristan contained until this is all over". Arthur paused then his tone changed. "And he could keep you safe too Eggsy, in Harry's honour. I am inviting you to join a new world. It's time to make our decision".
Eggsy smiled slightly. "I'd rather be with Harry, thanks".
"So be it". Arthur pressed down on the switch of the fountain pen and set it down on the table. A second or two passed with silence.
Eggsy looked down at himself and shrugged. Then Arthur's body seized. The old man groaned and slumped in his chair. Eggsy grinned and leaned forwards. "The problem with us common types is that we're light fingered. Kingsman's taught me a lot but sleight of hand, well I had that down already".
Arthur's breath had been speeding up, his face pale and body shaking as the poison worked it's effects. "You dirty little fucking prick". Then he jolted one last time before slumping onto the table. His heart stopping. Eggsy smirked and turned his attention to the scar on the man's neck.
