~part 30~
As soon as I arrived, the most obvious thing noticeable were the multiple shards of glass that had been broken and had been lying on the blowing grass covered in dandelions, since God knows when.
Avneet somehow came from behind the gate and was shaking with nervousness.
"Reem! Thank God you're here. Look..." she showed me her white dress covered in blood stains.
"What on earth?! I'm sorry but I can't keep this silent anymore. I have to call Faisal."
I started dialing his number, much to Avneet's disappointment.
"Faisal? Hi, can you please come to Tunisha's old house. There's been a murder and robbery. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, just bring yourself, don't bring any - any officers." I cast a glance at Avneet who looked slightly better when I said that.
"How did you find out it was murder?" She asked me timidly.
"Glass on the floor; blood on your shirt, hands - want any other proof that you committed this murder?" I said, raising my voice.
"WHAT? I did not commit this murder! Why would I have called you to the site then? Someone's just died in there!"
"Oh really? So how did you get into the house when you didn't have the keys.
"Well, I heard a scream so I decided to break the glass and go in to save the person.
"So you broke the glass, you went in - without the keys. Do you know who had the keys?"
"No. That's the point. The murderer had the keys."
"So you're saying the key destroying factory is the murderer? Look, the keys had been destroyed. No one can have the keys and there was no other way to enter this house without breaking the glass, which you did after you heard a scream and after the murder happened."
Suddenly, a car pulled up and Faisal got out with a number of police.
"I thought you said it's just Faisal that's coming!"
"Hmm, maybe that's why you were so scared that someone may discover something."
"Hello Reem. Hello Avneet." Faisal said rather politely.
"Faisal, why are you standing here so calmly? Go on - arrest her!"
"Wait Reem. I want to have a cup of tea first."
"What?!"
He hushed a finger to his lips and led everyone in.
Avneet was just as confused as me.
"Look, I don't know what you're doing but..."
"Chill Reem.... don't fuss."
"Avneet, get me a cup of tea." He ordered.
She rushed into the kitchen and soon enough, brought out a cup of tea.
He smelt the aromatic naturalness of the tea, and was just about to sip it when he stopped and looked down into his rucksack.
To Avneet's horror, he pulled out a chromatogram.
"What - what are you doing?" She asked hesitantly.
"Testing the tea." He replied back with a satisfying smile.
"Why?"
"You'll see."
He used a pipette to add a few drops of the tea onto the paper and soon enough, the molecules started separating. Instead of remaining brown, some white, grainy particles started appearing on it.
I watched in horror.
"Seems like this house is full of sleeping pills, am I right?" Faisal turned to Avneet.
"Oh my - I never knew. I'm so sorry!"
"I'm sorry Miss Kaur, I think it's time that we arrested you." Faisal said. I smiled contentedly.
"Wait! Stop!" A familiar voice made me jump from behind.
"What now?"
To my surprise, Sidd ran from his car and panted heavily as he reached the living room.
"Sidd? What on earth are you doing here?"
"Before it was too late - I'm just - I'm just admitting that.... it wasn't Avneet who committed the murder."
"Then who is it?" I went over to Sidd and looked into his eyes suspiciously.
"It was -"
"Go on..." Faisal came and stood beside me.
Avneet started crying silently.
"It was me."
Deafening silence rose around us and my heart just skipped a beat.
"Sidd, I know you must be panic-stricken but please - don't get yourself inv..."
"No, Reem. It was me. I killed a girl. Jannat."
My eyes widened in shock.
"Where is she?" Faisal asked, his voice almost shaking out of horror and disbelief.
Sidd led the way to an empty bedroom upstairs and stood beside an uplifted plank.
"She's here." He said quietly and opened the plank.
I screamed at the bloody sight of Jannat lying there - dead with ripped clothes.
Faisal and I exchanged glances.
Tears trailed down my ice cold cheeks and Faisal ordered the cops to tie a handcuff around Avneet while he inspected the site.
"Blood on the walls... hmm - right. Seems like she died a brutal death, or maybe it's a pretense."
Sidd was handcuffed as well and I dragged him by the metal out of the room and into the bedroom next door.
I pushed him against the wall.
"Sidd, tell me if it was you. Be honest. Please just tell me. I don't care I just want to know the truth, Sidd." I exhaled in exhaustion, inhaling deeply in anticipation of what he was going to say.
"Reem. I'm sorry. I murdered Jannat."
I stared at him with the glistening tears in my eyelids, pushing myself away and thrusting my body backwards. He stared earnestly at me.
He tried lifting his arms to touch my face but they were tied.
"R..."
"No." I said firmly, my voice going all wobbly.
"Faisal - take him away." I insisted, before I broke down.
"Reem, are you s..."
"Just do it. Take him away from my eyes. I don't want to see him." I said, looking away outside the window.
Avneet stood in silence all throughout this time.
"I'm - sorry, Avneet. You were right."
She tried smiling although she was shocked.
"It's just that - how could those sleeping pills be in this house?"
"All this Sharma business. I bet they have many more dangerous drugs around somewhere, hidden underneath a few more planks." She said in a flattering voice.
"Alright, calm down." I said, half crying. "You're innocent."
"Can I go now?" She asked shyly.
"Sure."
She nodded and gave me a hug.
"Err Avneet?" I stopped her, making her look back.
"Yeah?...." she asked timidly.
"If you're asked to present evidence in court, please take out some time and attend." I gave her a comforting smile.
"Okay. Bye." She waved.
