~part 28~

The rain was still dripping and I got out of the car quickly, heading towards Costa with my jacket over my head.

I felt like a social worker now, helping people who were related to my enemies....!

I reserved a table and sat down patiently, waiting for Avneet. My Instagram feed was all about the attack in Westminster, London.

I didn't understand why people tagged #prayforlondon on their posts, when they didn't have any respect whatsoever for the 5 people that lost their lives.

Just as I was engrossed in my thoughts, a young beautiful woman came up to me.

"Excuse me? Are you - Miss Sheikh?" She said in a posh, dainty voice.

"Err, yes! I am!" I tucked a loose strand behind my ear.

"Hold on.... Jannat?" I narrowed my eyes as I looked at her face closely.

"Excuse me?" She asked me questioningly.

"Oh, sorry... I can't seem to recognize you?" I stuttered.

She laughed quietly. "It's alright. I'm Avneet." She offered a hand.

I tucked mine into hers and we shook hands.

"Please have a seat. What would you like to have?" I scrolled through the menu.

"Your sympathy."

"Huh?" I looked up at her at this odd response.

She blinked away.

"What can I say? I have a rather long story to tell."

"Alright then - go ahead." I urged her.

"You know how Vishal is in jail..." she began.

"Yes...?"

"Well, he - it - it isn't his fault." She sighed.

"But I caught him red-handed in Secret Valley." I said sternly.

"But he's innocent! The fact that you found him there was, alright - he was helping Abhishek but, for a reason."

"What the reason then?" I wasn't giving her my full sympathy.

"He - he was forced to.... to help Siddharth Nigam. He forced him to help him. Abhishek was innocent. Siddharth fooled everyone with his foul play and got Abhishek killed by you. Siddharth loved you, Reem. And so did Abhishek. They had a rivalry between each other and... and Siddharth planned all this just to get Abhishek to look guilty in front of the cops. My brother is innocent, Reem. He's innocent."

She wiped a tear that rested on the tip of her eyelids and sobbed quietly.

Now this was a new story wasn't it? I had never heard this part to it.

"Okay." Was all I said.

I got out a notebook and started jotting down this new information. Avneet looked at in surprise.

"How did you come to find out about me?" I asked her.

"Well, you were on the radio after Abhishek's death. The whole town thought he was bad, but little do they know that Siddharth was behind all this."

"Hmm..."

"Anything else you want to tell me?" I asked her.

She looked at me with a straight face.

"Err, yes - I'm asking you to help me bail out my brother?!" Her dainty voice turned into a high pitched, colloquial accent.

"Look, I know you care for your brother and maybe what you're saying is the truth. I'll try my best to discuss this with my colleagues and...." I leaned forward just when she interrupted me.

"NO!" She got up abruptly, pushing her chair back.

The whole of Costa fell silent and looked at her strange behavior.

I looked around awkwardly and she sat down politely.

"Sorry." Her neck ducked forward.

"I just - don't want this to be shared. I trust you. You only. It's only got to be between you and me."

I narrowed my eyes.

"But, this case can't be handled by one person, otherwise it'll be hard to get proof for the jury members in the court...." I started.

"The court?!" Her eyes widened.

"Yeah...." I said surprisingly.

"Oh, err... I thought maybe you can do something on your own - like, without involving anyone else. You know - one man show?" She laughed unsurely.

I just stared at her unusual actions.

"Well, thanks Avneet, for this information. I'll try my best to keep it under cover and - hopefully we'll meet again."

She smiled.

"May I know where you obtained this information from?"

"I'll tell you tomorrow..." she said hurriedly.

"Okay...?! But.."

"Oh - it's just that - ah look, my driver's here. I have to go. See you tomorrow bye!" She left me quickly and I watched her get into the car and drive round the corner until the little white car turned into a small spec of white.

"She's a strange girl." I muttered under my breath.

💓

"How was your meeting with your friend?" Sidd asked at the dinner table that evening, stuffing a piece of chicken into his mouth.

"She's a bit weird." I said, resting my gaze upon the wine glass, just holding my fork in my hand and playing around.

"Who was she anyway?" Sidd mumbled, his mouth full of food.

"Avneet."

He looked up. "Sounds familiar doesn't it?"

I looked at him.

"She said.... she knew you."

"She did?" He arched his eyebrows, munching on a cucumber.

"Mm, she's Vishal's sister."

Sidd slowly stopped eating.

"Have your food." He quietly said, going back to his plate.

"I'm not hungry." I grunted and picked up my plate, rinsing it in the sink.

"Good night. I'm going to bed." I said, looking over my shoulder from the foot of the staircase.

"Alright. Goodnight." Sidd waved.

The lights in my room were dim, just when my phone beeped.

"Urgh..." I picked it up reluctantly to see someone had sent me an image.

"Kidnap her, take her to S.C. Attack her and make sure she doesn't have any weapons."

My mouth almost dropped at the sight of this.

Who had sent me this? At the top of the screen, it said "No identity."

Should I wake up Sidd?

My hands started shivering and I tried to breath through my frozen trachea.

My lungs felt like they had rocks in them and no matter how many mysteries I did, they always seemed to send a shiver down my spine.

I started analyzing the text.

"Kidnap her, take her.... obviously this means that this text might have been sent to the wrong person. And what's SC?" I muttered under my breath.

I wondered who was 'her' and S.C."
