~part 24~

The next day had been started with a bright morning, with the birds singing softly above the branches in the warm-leafed trees.

I slunk over to the window and stretched lazily, popping my head outside and squinting with a smile. The sun rays were glistening themselves. I knew why this house was called Sunrise now; there was so much sun shining around!

After a few minutes, I heard a door creaking behind me.

"Who's there?" I asked sinuously.

Nothing but the spring breeze whistled in my ears.

All that was there was Sidd lying on the bed in an unusual manner. I giggled quietly.

"Maybe it's only my imagination." I laughed and went over to him.

"Sidd." I shook him slightly.

"Sidd?" I narrowed my eyes at his stubbornness. "How much will you sleep? Come on!" I chuckled.

How could he sleep so much?

"SIDD!" I pulled off the duvet that was covering him, and my eyes sizzled in my sockets.

The duvet slipped out of my shivering fingers and to my horror, Sidd was definitely asleep, but dangerously asleep.

I gasped, not knowing what to do. Nervousness swept up my stomach in an anxiety wave.

Coming out of his mouth, was a white substance that was staining the pillow which was holding his head.

His face looked like it was cringing with sub conscious pain.

My knees went weak and I felt myself shaking.

"Tunisha! Sumedh!" I screamed.

They both came rushing into our bedroom and stopped abruptly at the sight.

"Oh - oh my goodness." Tunisha widened her eyes.

"Reem, we must take him to the hospital." Sumedh wrapped an arm around his shoulder and we all carried him to the hospital.

He was laid on a wheel bed and all the nurses rushed around, giving him injections and finding a vacant chamber.

I broke into countless sobs.

Sumedh rested a comforting hand on my shoulder.

"It's alright. He'll be fine." He looked at me unsurely.

💓

We all waited patiently and my head was heavy with tiredness.

"Sir, the patient has gained consciousness." The nurse told Sumedh.

He immediately brightened up and nodded towards me.

I jerked up and ran into the room.

Sidd was lying on it, looking rather weak but he was smiling as he saw me. Just as I was about to sit myself in the vacant space near him, Tunisha rushed forward and sat herself down, entwining her fingers in his.

He looked surprised but smiled even more.

Sumedh watched them in envy.

I walked over to him and smiled awkwardly. He blinked away and pretended to be happy.

"Sidd, how did you get so ill?" I asked him, breaking the silence.

Just as he was about to begin, the doctor sounded from the door:

"Miss Sheikh, we had extracted some of that substance and from our understanding, it seems like it was a diluted sleeping pill."

"What!? A sleeping pill?"

"But -" Tunisha had a worried look on her face.

"As you know, there are two types of sleeping sleeping pills. The type that Mr Nigam consumed was much more harmful, and are known to be illegal in this country. It is worth investigating on this topic as to how those even came near Mr Nigam."

I gasped, astonished at his report.

I had studied bio-chemistry and all the scale factors and digits seemed very familiar. Drug analysis was my strong point at university.

"You yourself are a high level forensic scientist, so if we form a contract, we might be able to get to the depth of this case. Please do think about it." The doctor nodded.

"Thank you doctor." I smiled uneasily and he left.

I looked back at Sidd and a thousand uncertainties filled my mind.

Maybe he was still involved in drug cases and he lied to me?......

After all, it is realistic to be avenging your twin brother's death.

I gulped and trashed those thoughts.

Come on Reem, if you're going to jump to conclusions, don't think of some crap that you're gonna say.

"Err, I'll get going. I have to go somewhere."

"Where? Why?" Tunisha interrogated.

"Well, maybe you might want some privacy." I taunted.

She stiffened up and smiled back confusingly.

I pushed through the door and rushed out.

My hand hovered in front of a taxi as it stopped.

As I got myself in the taxi, my fingers bashed my phone screen frantically.

"Hello? Hello, Faisal? Yeah -I need to meet you. Yes, right now!"

I hung up and stared out of the window hesitantly.

As soon as I reached his house, I ran up to his room, carrying a file which I tried to hide under my baggy woolen jumper.

💓

"So you're telling me that -"

"I'm not telling you anything. I'm not sure about all this."

Faisal tapped his foot to the beat of the light music that was playing in his kitchen.

I looked at him worriedly.

He bounced off his chair and attended to something that was cooking on the stove.

My eyes were fixed on a little sand timer that was placed on the kitchen dining platform, surrounded by mini candles. I rested my head in my right palm.

"Voila." Faisal placed a plate in front of me.

"I'm not hungry." I sulked, still watching the sand timer.

"How can you not like egg scotch?" He shrugged.

"Trying to be a cook are we?" I smirked, shaking my head in disapproval.

"Well, Roshni's not at home so it's my duty to serve my guest." He smiled inclusively.

"You're really good at cooking." I sighed and poked the egg scotch with my fork playfully, cutting open to see a rather white, liquidy substance float out.

I strained back my memory to this morning: a similar white substance which Sidd had excreted from his mouth.

"Faisal!" I panicked.

"What?" He turned round in surprise.

"That!"

"Huh?"

"That! Sidd..... drug, illegal!!" I shrieked, not understanding why Faisal was still confused.

"Oh my.... Reem, please. Sit down."

He sat me down and I still eyed the plate in suspense.

"Okay, tomorrow we both need to go to the doctor and sign that contract. And you yourself are going to test that substance alright? I've checked and re-checked with the drugs association and by far, they said they have not legally brought in that illegal drug. So calm down, they said that it's only 23% chance that that drug is a drug, and only 14% illegality chances."

I wasn't convinced.

"We can't play around like this anymore. If something happens to Sidd....."

"Nothing will happen! Trust me and have faith in all your fellow colleagues. We're just as worried, alright?" Faisal widened his eyes and I calmed down.

Maybe it was only just a normal substance - or was it......
