Chapter 4
"Hey, May," Blaze's voice called out, making May look up from the cursed cash register. He gave her his signature cute smile, and she felt the small frown on her face give way for a small smile.
"Hey, Blazer," she greeted. "I'll be out in a minute.
Blazer was a pet name that she'd given him after she saw him enter the coffee shop with a black blazer on, a poor attempt at being satirical and innovative with his actual name. He didn't seem to mind it, though, and it sort of stuck.
In the past week that she'd begun talking to him, she'd grown quite fond of his company. He was genuinely a good person to be around, and May appreciated that quality in him. Not many people had it, after all, and she was included in the many.
"I'll take over," Lily said, all but pushing May towards Blaze, who shot her a grateful smile. Lily had been more than supportive of May's developing friendship with Blaze, and she was always hinting at them being in a secret relationship, much to May's annoyance.
"Where are we going?" May asked when he grabbed her hand and led her out of the shop. She pulled her hand out of his grasp, the warmth and comfort that it provided too much for her to bear. For a moment, she thought she saw a flash of hurt pass through his face, but she deliberately ignored it.
"It's a surprise," he said, averting his gaze and walking ahead of her. She followed after him.
"I hate surprises," she said causally.
"Why?" he asked, turning his head towards her. "I like them."
"I don't," she stated. "Surprises catch me off guard. They bring change, and that scares me. I don't like changes."
His eyes scanned her face intently. "Changes can be good or bad, May. You might hate the bad changes, but you can't hate the good ones."
She kept quiet, and he smiled at her- his rosy lips twitching up to reveal a set of perfect white teeth. The small dimple appeared on his cheek again, and strands of hair fell across his forehead in a messy yet attractive manner. May didn't know how to explain it, but she felt a queasy feeling enter her stomach; a feeling that made her want to grab his face and kiss him breathless.
"May, if you keep staring at me like that, I'm going to start thinking that you have a crush on me."
That sentence was enough to snap her out of her trance, and she scowled at him. "Shut up."
He laughed. "Your wish is my command."
Somehow, along the way to their desired destination, his hand managed to find hers again.
And this time, she didn't pull away.
