"Wait, you guys can't come?" I questioned my parents, suddenly feeling anxious.

"Only members of the nobility can enter from what I hear," my father responded, smiling at me gently. "But it'll be alright, only one of us could have come in the first place anyways. You wouldn't want to pick, would you?"

I rolled my eyes at that statement as I stood from my desk to face my parents, who were standing in the doorway. "I can help you get ready, though," my mom said, grinning at me. "You're going to be the prettiest of the bunch." I snorted, remembering how pretty I thought the other girls looked. Still, I appreciated the sentiment. My mom paused before adding on, "Plus, Sophie Foster is going to be picking you up and you'll be arriving alongside her and her son."

"Eamon," I reminded her. "He's one of my best friends, guys. You'll probably hear about him more."

My dad sighed. "I'm sure we'll be hearing lots of about him." He locked eyes with my mom for a moment before turning back to me. "How do you feel about tonight?"

I shrugged my shoulders in response, but when no one said anything I realized they wanted a verbal answer. "I don't know. I'm excited to be one of the youngest members of the nobility. I'm excited the council trusts me, and Lady Marella and I went over a bunch of stuff in my session today and she said she thinks that I show great control over my abilities and that I'm powerful and gifted."

"Hopefully I can find the time to have a conversation with her," my father responded. "I'm sure there's lots she was able to learn that I wasn't given circumstances, but maybe there are things that I have learned that she could help teach you in the formal setting."

"Actually, there is one thing she was thinking about asking a more ancient pyrokinetic for an opinion," I responded immediately, perking up at the fact maybe he could have an answer.

"Ancient?" my dad laughed. "Does it look like my ears have pointed?"

I rolled my eyes and responded, "You know what I mean." He still laughed at his joke anyways and I took a moment before starting to explain the situation of my special abilities.

"Oh." My father frowned. "Well, her explanation does seem pretty on spot. Maybe your specialty is heat specifically. I do recall I believe my mother's abilities seemed to work the same way as yours. It's been a while since I've spoken to her, I could probably ask." He looked to be in thought for a moment before placing his hand on my mom's shoulder so she knew he was speaking to her specifically. "I'm going to be in the office and see if I can reach my mother to ask her about it. After that I'll go to the restaurant. Are you going to stay here until she gets back or meet me there?"

"I'll probably stay here to wait for her," she told him. "So we'll see you tonight, then?" He nodded in response to her before leaning down so they could share a quick kiss before he headed out. After he was gone she turned to me. "Alright, let's look through your closet to see if we have anything fancy enough."

After a while I finally finished getting ready and we by our leapmaster and waited for the Fosters to appear. "How is the mural going?" I asked my mother, trying to make conversation.

She smiled. "It's actually looking pretty good! Have you had a look at it so far?"

"No," I replied, shaking my head. "But Eamon's told me a little about it."

"It's beautiful, Keefe Foster is genuinely gifted at his craft. I had my doubts in the beginning, but he took all criticism thrown his way and so far it's looking exactly how your father and I pictured it." She grinned and anything I was going to reply with was cut off by Sophie and Eamon's entrance.

"Carina, hi," Sophie greeted my mother, using her first name. When she noticed the lack of my father she questioned, "Is Clarence here as well?"

"He's in his office," my mother responded, smiling in Sophie's direction although I could tell it was the same up-tight smile she'd always have. "He's talking to his mother, from what I know."

"Oh, do they chat often?" Sophie seemed intrigued.

"From time to time, I wouldn't say too often," she answered. "Is everything all set for her?"

"Yes, and when she's done I promise I'll have her right back here." Sophie grinned at me before turning back to my mother. "I'm sure someone will reach out to you from the council soon to discuss how her new role might affect your family life. You're certain you're okay with this change? A lot will be expected from her, and it is possible there are moment where she could be at risk of danger. It's not to be taken lightly."

My mom looked at me for a moment, her eyes softening before she turned back to Sophie. "I'm just extremely proud of her, I wouldn't ruin such a huge opportunity for her if I had a weapon pressed against my head." With that, she grabbed me and pulled me into a tight hug. "I love you kiddo, and I'll see you after."

I nodded and smiled. "I love you too, mom," I replied.

"Alright, we don't want to be too late," Sophie said, and with that we were off. After another glance at my mother we leaped to Eternalia, which due to my parents not being in the nobility, I hadn't seen much of.

"Can I just say, since I didn't get to earlier, that you look absolutely beautiful?" Sophie grinned at me and then nudged Eamon. "Don't you agree?"

He blushed slightly before saying, "Yeah, you do Nova."

I'm sure my face heated with a similar shade. "Thank you." We continued walking, passing certain people by. Every once and a while Sophie would see a familiar face and make sure to wave at them or quickly say hi. "Where are we going exactly?"

"Seat of Eminence," Sophie responded, and I remembered it as being hub of the nobility. I think either one of my parents or  maybe even Eamon had mentioned it.

"This is going to be my first time going, so don't worry," Eamon immediately responded. "Only nobility is allowed in, it's why we can't get in without my mom since we haven't received our official titles yet."

"Yeah, my dad said something about that earlier," I said as we approached the correct building and Sophie was able to open the doors. When we entered it was pitch black and I was almost worried that I was going to fall over something randomly placed in the room, although Sophie explained it was completely empty. She also went over why it was empty, apparently security reasons.

"I remember the first time I was here, I was just as worried as you guys. Don't be too anxious though, we're about to cross a threshold where we'll each get a little light." Her point was proven when not too seconds later she crossed the threshold herself and suddenly there was a red light around her. Eamon had a blue and after I eventually crossed mine turned brown. I was worried that having a dark color meant I couldn't see as much as everyone else, but for some reason I was seeing just fine.

"They show which abilities we have, mine is red for my inflicting. We're still not sure on exactly why that became my most prominent, as telepathy is what I'm most known for."

"Do the colors have meanings?" I questioned, confused. "Like, why are abilities certain colors?"

"I'm not sure," she replied, shrugging her shoulders. "The only one to make sense to me other than my own red for inflicting, was when I first came here and Wylie Endal's light kept flashing to be different colors. He's a flasher, as you might be aware of."

Neither Eamon nor myself responded, we simply followed along until we noticed other people surrounded by lights. Ashla with who I assumed to be her mother was surrounded by a yellow light. I slightly remembered her telling us during lunch that day that she and her mother had the same ability.

Atlas and Juno stood together, as always. Although she was surrounded by a gold color and his was more of a peach. Behind them was someone with white, who I later would find out was Atlas's father--a froster.

Briar and Marcel were together, Briar's color being purple and Marcel's being a bright green, almost lime. Next to them was Briar's mother, who was also surrounded by the same purple light as her daughter. I was a little embarrassed after realizing we were the last to arrive, but I tried not to think much about it.

After we spent a few moments greeting everyone, and a few of them looked slightly starstruck in front of Sophie, the councillors arrived in matching tailored suits, each of them having a cape pinned by what looked to be a golden key. Everyone had their hair pulled back, making it so they appeared as a united front. All of them were surrounded by silver glows, which confused me but I held back from asking, afraid of embarrassing myself.

After a quick introduction from the councillors, and another reference to what we were going to go through, they opened a small door which looked to be set inside a very thick wall. "You guys go on from here without us," Sophie said. "We'll see you when you get back. Then she turned to Eamon with narrowed eyes. "Behave."

Briar snickered at that, but was silenced immediately by a glare from her mother. "Don't you start, you two better behave too."

Briar rolled her eyes, not effected by her mother's words and instead turning to the councillor's direction. "Can we go now?"

"Before that, there's one last thing to discuss," Councillor Emery interjected. "As you are aware, we almost always instill a team leader. Your task yesterday was not only to achieve a spot on the team, but also an exercise to test who the team leader would be. We already contacted this person and they have agreed to a leading position, I don't want to get anyone's hopes up."

I looked around at everyone in the group, wondering who the team leader would be when Eamon stepped up from behind me. "That would be me," he said, slightly waving his hand before dropping it. I looked to see Sophie looking at her son with pride in her eyes.

"Now we're just playing favorites," Marcel complained, rolling his eyes. "We know why he was picked."

"Because he's the most powerful out of all of us," I responded, raising an eyebrow daring him to say otherwise. Ashla snorted before turning and whispering something to her mother. I didn't catch what she said as I got distracted by Councillor Oralie stepping up.

"While we think each of you are extremely talented and gifted, I will have to back up Miss. Madigan's statement. It's not a game of playing favorites, we watched each of you equally and voted on what we thought would be right," she explained before looking past us. I turned to see a group of people also surrounded by lights. "Ah, there you guys are."

I noticed Ivan, Eamon's brother, first. He was surrounded by a pink light, and I assumed that was for being an empath. He was holding Serena's sister's hand, a vanisher named Celeste surrounded by violet. Behind them was the rest of the current Team Valiant. "Sorry, we were trying to stay coordinated," Ivan apologized.

"You're good, hey brother," Leulla stepped out, nodding in his direction, before turning to the rest of us. "Every year it almost seems like this gets more and more crowded. Now that they are here, we can go through the door."

It took forever for everyone who was allowed to, to get through. Eventually we were all squeezed into one tight place, explained by Leulla to be called Paragon. "We will now be travelling to the Point of Purity for the Prime Sources," she explained. "The prime sources should have been covered in school."

"Sunlight, moonlight, and starlight?" I questioned, my mind traveling to a moment where we learned about it.

"Exactly!" Councillor Emery grinned. "There was a time when they were not taught in school. There was also a time where we did not ensure everyone had one of these." He pointed to the key pins, and it was at that moment I noticed Team Valiant had them as well. Councillor Oralie made sure to distribute enough for the rest of us who didn't have them.

"Traveling takes a while and it is very unstable. When we eventually reach our destination, there is a very ungraceful stop in which these keys will help keep you guys more stable. We learned through the mistake of our first time doing this that these keys would be needed." I thought about Eamon's mom, and wondered if I would ever remember to ask her about what she was talking about.

After the explanation the councillors held up the keys and did something to them so that we were suddenly moving. I had been feeling extremely claustrophobic, squished between Eamon and Ashla against the wall, but suddenly it was as if there was no gravity and we were moving freely. The Paragon was spinning around faster than I expected, and I was suddenly thankful for holding the key in my hand for stability.

Eventually we got to what they had previously mentioned to be the 'Point of Purity for the Prime Sources.' I noticed immediately that the vanishers in the group had started to flicker in and out of sight, almost like a strobe light.

"The Point of Purity is where can access the purest version of each type of light without any contamination or filtering. They can be extremely intense for those with light talents, as you can see," Eamon's sister explained as we looked to Briar and Celeste, flickering and out of sight.

"It feels intense," Briar added, not saying anything else. She looked almost in awe of what was going on.

"Despite the high intensities for them, everyone else can also feel each source so long as they concentrate. First we'll focus on sunlight, as it's the easiest. Stretch your arms out and hold your palms toward the windows." I felt goofy as I copied what Councillor Emery told us, but I felt less insecure when I noticed everyone else was still doing the same. "Feel for the warm tingle you're used to on a bright summer day."

Despite the freezing temperature of the Paragon, I thought of the heat of the sun. As my abilities progressed, heat started to became something I would sought after at almost all times. Basking in the sun's heat was one of my favorite feelings, and eventually it was almost as if I could feel my entire body being wrapped in the sun's warmth. It was an almost indescribable feeling, and I almost had to hold back from releasing that inner heat outward.

"Harnessing the sun is about respect and restraint," Councillor Leulla said, looking at me as she said the word 'restraint.' I understood what she was talking about, as I restrained myself from setting the room on fire. I took her next words to heart as she continued, "It is not a gentle heat, and it can burn all the way to your core if you let it. We must never let ourselves take more than we have a need for."

"Moonlight is up next," Councillor Emery decided to continue, so I tried my best to focus on his words and less on the previous feeling I'd been experiencing.

"And it's the opposite," Councillor Terik interjected. "Harnessing the moon is about managing expectations. Search for the soft calm you feel on a clear evening, which lingers in the quietest places." This one turned out to be much harder for me, as the heat is normally what I would associate with. Still, I tried to think less about temperature and more about a calming feeling. Specifically, I thought about moments I would be most at peace. Sitting on Blythe's bedroom floor, talking for hours about things that wouldn't matter. Calling Eamon every night on my imparter, talking to him before falling asleep about things that would. When I sit at the lunch table surrounded by my friends and have that calming moment at times where I realize that I'm surrounded by people that love me.

I realized that that calming feeling was enough, and soon enough I could feel a cold, silky caress down the back of my neck. "The moonlight will always be there for us in our darkest hours," Councillor Terik continued to speak once he felt we all had enough time to conjure up the feeling. "Sometimes it's weak, sometimes it's strong, so we have to learn to embrace its force no matter its varying phases. Like the sunlight we demand for as much as we can, but the difference is we never push for more than it has to offer."

"Starlight," Councillor Oralie started, "is the most varied of the sources. You'll feel it patiently thrumming in the background, like a steady, tingly heartbeat. Each star only shares the faintest flicker unless we ask it to give more, in which it will pour out all we need in abundance. It is always there waiting." The word heartbeat helped me to realize what I was searching for, and eventually I felt a pulsing shiver like it was everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. "Harnessing the stars is about choice, and utilizing them takes both knowledge and wisdom."

After we finished with that, Councillor Alina started to go over our last "test" of leaping back to Eternalia using a beam made from all three Prime Sources. She explained that while they used to have each person have two councillors, they started to let more people on the team so there weren't enough councillors for that to happen, which is when they started the practice of having one coucillor and one ex-team valiant member join, and if there weren't enough members only then would there be a person leaping with two councillors. "We have already pre-selected who your guides will be."

And with that I noticed immediately, and was not surprised, as Eamon's siblings made their way to him, high fiving him and doing a quick group hug. I awkwardly looked around, wondering who they would pair with me, when I realized Councillor Oralie and one of the females from Team Valiant, Haelyn Verbeck, were making their way to me.

"Hi, Nova, right?" Haelyn questioned, grinning at me. "I'm Haelyn, it's nice to meet you finally."

"Hi," I said, smiling at her.

"We'll not only be your guides for this leap, but also in the future while doing any tasks if you cannot find your answers from your team leader, you can always come to us," Councillor Oralie informed, smiling. "I'll make sure to bypass your imparter so you can reach me after this."

I smiled gratefully, and wondered about Haelyn. "Your ability, you're a...?"

"I'm a froster," she grinned. "I know, common ability, but I understand why they matched us. You're a pyrokinetic, correct?"

I almost cried when I realized the thought they put into our placements, and having her be my new "mentor" in a way. "So we're like opposites?" I questioned, almost rolling my eyes at how stupid my words sounded.

"Opposite in a way, but very similar in others. I move towards frost the same way you move towards fire. I think you'll come to find we're most similar than different. I've always related to hydrokinetics and pyrokinetics in my readings about them, and interactions as well."

Before I could say anything else, Councillor Alina started to speak over everyone. "As I'm sure you've discussed with your guides already, they will be your points of contact for as long as they serve. So long as you maintain your title as Regent, your councillor will be your point of contact as well. Primarily we expect you to report to your team leader, Eamon Foster, and expect him to report to all of us. That being said, if you are ever needing guidance, your contacts will always be available to you. Also important to note, most of your assignments will be coming from our Team Valiant corresponder, Sophie Foster. She will most likely work with the team leader alone who will distribute to the rest of you. She is another person you can contact for help."

"If everyone is ready now, we'll begin," Councillor Emery said, looking to all of us. When he saw us nod, the councillor in each pairing reached into their cloaks and removed a long silver chain that held a simple crystal pendant. Each of them held their pendant up to the windows, and the paths were so bright I found I could not look directly at the beams.

"Now, we ask that you make your oath as Regent. There have been a few adjustments over the years for what each group will say, but ultimately we've rested upon these words. 'I swear to use everything in my power to serve the council and keep our world a haven of peace, hope, and illumination.' Each of you will say the oath one at a time before making your leap back to Eternalia. There your assigned guides will give you your final instructions." I had tuned him out after the words of the oath, trying my best to remember the words in order so I wouldn't have an embarrassing moment where they'd have to repeat it to me thousand times. I suddenly felt cursed I didn't have a photographic memory. "It is normal for the team leader to go last, so we must ask who else would like to go first."

I was still trying to remember the words, so I found myself stepping back to almost hide myself so I wouldn't be picked first. It was like being back in school when they would pick teams for certain games in physical education. "I'll go," Atlas said as he stepped forward. He locked eyes with Juno before turning to look at Eamon as well, both grinned at him. He took that as an okay and released a breath as he reached for the hands of his guides and repeated almost perfectly, "I swear to use everything in my power to serve the council and keep our world a haven of peace, hope, and illumination."

"May the Prime Sources carry you safely," Emery responded before Atlas turned to look at everyone in the room one more time. After giving each of us a smile, he moved forward and the three of them stepped into the blinding light, vanishing.

"I'll go next," Juno stated in a quiet voice, smiling at Eamon as Atlas did. It was only then that I realized they were asking for his permission, to which he gave. After she was gone, Marcel and Briar went as well. I recognized that Celeste had been a guide for Briar, which made sense as they were both vanishers.

Ashla and I locked eyes, realizing one of us had to be next. I was still worried I'd forget the words, so I was grateful when she moved forward to go as well, almost tugging her guides along with the amount of excitement bubbling from her. After getting permission from Eamon she followed suit of those before her.

"Guess that's me next, then," I said, letting out a nervous breath. I looked to Eamon, and I don't think his smile had been so wide for anyone else. It helped me to feel less anxious, and I almost thanked him if it wasn't for the room full of people watching us. I took Oralie and Haelyn's hands before clearing my throat. I was almost shocked at how rehearsed my voice sounded as I said my vow, "I swear to use everything in my power to serve the council and keep our world a haven of peace, hope, and illumination."

I'm sure my face was bright red, but Councillor Emery only smiled as he replied, "May the Prime Sources carry you safely."

"I'm good?" I turned to Eamon, who grinned at me.

"As always," he responded simply.

I took that as a cue to move forward and step into the light, Councillor Oralie and Haelyn by my side, letting the Sources carry us away.

I don't think I had ever experienced such a soothing, peaceful leap as that one. I almost wished we could go through going back up, so I could do it all over again. I suddenly was thankful that Team Valiant members were now invited back up for the next Team's orientation. I was somehow made to feel both powerful and humbled at the same time.

We leaped to a round room, explained to be Councillor Oralie's readying room in the Seat of Eminence. "The leap takes a lot out of you kids, we've realized, so we take this time to clean you up a bit and give you all your new things."

I thought about the circlets, pins, and cloaks that were staples of Team Valiant. The almost always was dressed in a united front to look the same. I was almost a bit saddened that I would be wearing the new pin, so I could no longer wear my family's crest. It meant a lot to my mother specifically to proudly wear the family name.

Haelyn and Oralie both worked together to "make me look my best." After a few quiet moments, Councillor Oralie moved away to grab a large chest and flipped back the lid to reveal the circlets that looked almost identical to previous members I'd seen. I noticed the brown jewel in the middle, and studied it. I had always wondered what the jewels represented, no two members had ever had the same color at the same time. "What does my jewel mean?" I questioned.

"The jewels represent the color that surrounded you while you were in the Seat of Eminence," Haelyn said as she worked. "You must have radiated brown."

"We took great care into choosing your jewel specifically," Councillor Oralie informed me. "There are few brown gemstones to choose from, eventually we settled on one called Fire Agate." She grinned at her words. "We give you three circlets, one to represent each Prime Source. Eamon will be in charge of coordinating to make sure everyone is wearing the same to come across as a united front.

She then pulled out a smaller trunk and flipped back the lid to reveal the pins, which I knew to have the team's symbol. "You've seen these before, correct?"

"I have," I responded, looking at them. I felt weird, I never thought I'd be so special as to get to see one so close to me. I thought maybe Blythe would be invited to join and then I'd see her. "And the cloaks?"

There were three more chests on the floor to which she pointed. I was kind of excited to see what my patch would be. Councillor Oralie opened a smaller chest and handed me one of the patches so I could see the design. I wasn't sure why I didn't expect it, but when I saw the detailed silhouette of the flareadon, I realized how stupid it was to not expect. It looked a lot like the level seven mascot symbol, although slightly different.

"Well, that makes sense," I finally said after a moment, letting out a laugh.

Haelyn looked to see what I was talking about before laughing herself. Councillor Oralie let out a small chuckle herself before explaining, "Obviously, we tailored a lot of your look after your ability. Fire Agate and the Flareadon. Still, there's more reason to that. We loved the qualities about being resolute and enduring. Especially we thought enduring would fit perfectly, you've endured so much these past few months. And we expect that you'll be enduring a lot more in the future, and you're capable of handling each thing thrown your way."

"On top of that, a flareadon is uncommon, just like a person like you," Haelyn added on, smiling. "I think that could also be part of it. And the fire resistant can almost be like a metaphor, I'm not sure what, but it just seems like one."

I was too busy laughing at her tone to listen to Councillor Oralie explain other reasonings. Eventually they placed one of the new circlets onto my head, and placed my new cloak on along with its pin. I turned to the mirror and almost couldn't recognize me.

While my hair was normally unruly against my scalp, they had managed to find a product to calm it down so that the circlet rested against my forehead with ease. I made the mental note to ask Councillor Oralie what she used later, although I assumed it could probably be found in Slurps & Burps. I avoided going there due to the fact Serena's father owned it, and while he was nice I liked to avoid seeing her as much as possible.

I looked like me only more, dare I say, fiery. It wasn't the dramatic change I'd been expecting, but it was intense on its own. "Thank you," I said, smiling at both of them. I looked beautiful.

Eventually we made our way back to the dark, spotlighted room where we had previously left everyone behind. I studied everyone's looks, noting that like me there weren't any big differences. I also took notice of their different mascots, smiling at the fact Eamon's was the same as both his siblings and his mother before him.

We were still waiting on Ashla and Briar, who came in a few moments later and I grinned at their new looks as well. Ashla's blonde hair had been trimmed while Briar's hair was now in neat curls falling past her shoulders.

I wasn't sure what to do, as everyone seemed to go to their parents to talk when we returned, but eventually Eamon noticed me standing alone and said something to his family surrounding him and came to me. "Intense, right?"

I snorted. "Yeah, I never imagined something like this could happen to me."

"Well, at least now you have proof you're more special than you realize," he told me, and my face burned at the thought. "You look great, by the way," he said, talking about my small makeover.

"Thanks," I said. "You look great too. I like the new hair."

He rolled his eyes while instinctively a hand traveled through the new, shorter, hairdo. "Yeah, it's going to take some time getting used to. I really didn't want them to touch it, but my sister said my mom had been wanting me to get a haircut so this was her only opportunity to get that done." I had almost forgotten it would have been both his siblings in the room with him, working on his new look. "Still, I think it'll be fine in the long run. Leulla's good at this kind of stuff. I don't know, I might miss your crazy hair too."

I rolled my eyes. "Please, give it two hours and it'll probably be back to normal. I'm thinking of asking for whatever they used to calm it down so I can start doing this on my own. I like it." In a nervous habit, one of my fingers started to twirl a piece of hair although it went into the direction of the curl that was already there.

His family moved in our direction, where I was able to get the chance to be properly introduced to his siblings. After a few moments Celeste came over as well, immediately grabbing Ivan's hand and not letting it go, and I was introduced to her as well. She seemed much nicer than her sister, although the bar was so low it was hard to tell whether that meant she was actually sweet or not.

Soon enough everyone moved to steps outside the Seat of Eminence, where we decided we would have our official team meeting the next day at Eamon's house. That was convenient as his mom had been the Team Valiant corresponder, in charge of assigning tasks to the team, for a little over a decade and half at that point.

"You two need to call me more," Sophie lectured her older children as we were getting ready to go.

"Mom, I come home all the time," Ivan protested, rolling his eyes.

"And we literally work together," Leulla interjected, although she simply smiled at her mother.

"It's still not enough. You better call your father too. Especially you," she narrowed her eyes at Ivan, "he misses you guys. He wants to hear from you just as much as I."

"Okay mom," Ivan said, not protesting and simply bringing her into a hug before walking off with Celeste to his side, promising to call the next day.

"He's too independent," Sophie stated, rolling her eyes. "And those two are definitely getting married soon, I can hear the wedding bells already." She then said quick goodbyes with Leulla as well.

"Are you excited to see your parents and show them the new getup?" Sophie asked me as we started to walk towards the streets of Eternalia where people would actually be. They took notice of the large group moving, and loud whispers of the next generation of Team Valiant could be heard.

I tried to ignore the whispers from around me as I told her, "I'm excited for everything."
