Bonus Chapter - One
Almost 6,000 words of Eamon brain. Enjoy. There were a bunch of spelling and grammar mistakes in that first chapter but tbh I just kept them going in this one for continuity sake. I did however change one tiny piece of dialogue i think mr forkle said because the original dialogue was talking about something i didn't follow through with and adding thoughts from eamon behind that woudn't make sense lmaoo
When Nova's ability is triggered - Eamon's p.o.v
Having lunch detention was the general norm by this point, so I was barely watching where I was going as I headed in the direction. I was excited knowing that Mika landed himself a spot as well, and we were already telepathically making plans together on what we wanted to do.
I heard it's Lady- I was cut off as I realized I had accidentally knocked a poor girl to the ground.
Eamon? Mika's voice echoed in confusion.
Hold on, I responded to him, glancing at the girl who was standing up from the ground, apologizing, "Whoa, sorry."
"It's alright, I wasn't looking where I was going," I told her, and realized it was Blythe's best friend as her eyes snapped up and met mine. "Too busy talking with someone," I decided to add on, pointing to my head as she stayed silent.
After a slight pause she responded, "It's fine," before making her way towards the direction of the cafeteria, no doubt to meet with my cousin. The two were extremely close, Nova was all Blythe talked about at our family meetings. I knew Serena and Mika barely cared, Serena rarely cared about anything whilst Mika was a free spirit who simply enjoyed chaos, but I thought Blythe's random stories as she talked with our family's were interesting at times. It slightly hurt, though, knowing that Blythe hated all of us and instead took friendship with some random girl none of us really grew up around.
"Wait hold on," I found myself calling after her. I wanted to ask about Blythe, since Blythe never talked about me. I knew her name was Nova, I did have a photographic memory after all on top of the fact Blythe only ever talked about her, but I remembered the coined nickname and blurted out, "Poopy, right?" A smile appeared on my face as I thought of the story behind the nickname, back when I tried to rerecreate the Great Gulon Incident. While my mom had been angrier than I'd ever seen her, my dad secretly high-fived me and told me he was proud of me for trying whilst also denying he ever had a part in the original. Which was a complete lie.
Her fists clenched and I realized I must have hit a sore spot. "It's Nova. Novena if you want to be specific," she snappily replied.
Not wanting to look like a jerk, I recalled that her middle name was Poppy and thought, maybe I could pass it off as an accident. "No, but I heard Blythe say your middle name is Poopy and I thought that was weird."
Her eyebrows furrowed and I couldn't tell if it was in anger or confusion. "My middle name is Poppy," she corrected, even though I already knew. There was a pause before she said in a questioning tone, "I didn't realize Blythe talks to you?"
That proved that Blythe at least talked about us, and I felt a bit hurt at the question. It meant that Blythe probably went off in this girl's ear about how much we all sucked. Sure, Serena was definitely mean despite pretending to be an angel around her parents, but I thought Mika and I were pretty okay. Suddenly, that time when I got Gulon poop on her head flashed back in my mind and I realized it definitely didn't win me any favors. This girl definitely hated me.
I responded, "Hence the I heard Blythe say, as in I was in the room and I heard her mom ask about you and it came up." All of what I said was true, and I forced a grin on my face as I decided to give her an exit route and say, "Anyways, I've got a date with detention today so I'll be on my way."
"Okay," she responded, almost seeming relieved.
Deciding to tease her a little bit I waved and said, "See you Poopy."
Her fists clenched once more and I had to bite back a chuckle at how angry she was, noticing she looked really pretty even when she was upset, "I thought I just told you-"
"I like Poopy more," I cut her off, finishing off my statement with a wink so she knew I wasn't being serious.
She let out a steady breath, maybe holding back from saying something snarky back, but after unclenching her fists instead she a shriek left her mouth. "Oh this isn't supposed to happen!" She shouted, terror in her voice as she stared at the fire in her hands.
"Shoot," I said, suddenly worried she was going to light the school on fire. "Hold on there, pyrokinetic," I added on. Blythe never told me her friend was a pyrokinetic, I wondered why it never came up.
She turned to me with absolute terror filling her eyes, and I realized that the reason Blythe hadn't mentioned it is because Blythe didn't know. She couldn't know--not when Nova apparently didn't know herself. "Pyrokinetic?" She shouted before quickly looking around us, probably hoping no one could hear.
I noticed she had most likely gone into shock and looked like she was a second away from hyperventilating, so I made the quick trip to find Elwin since I knew he wouldn't be far.
"You're just like your mother," Elwin told me upon my entrance, and I rolled my eyes. "What potion did you explode on yourself this time?"
"There's a girl who I think is in shock in the hallway?"
He immediately jumped up, questioning in a panicked voice, "And you left her all alone why?" It didn't cross my mind that I had, in fact, left her alone. In the moment all I thought about was grabbing him. I followed after him and we worked on coaxing her into standing, as she had apparently sat down on the ground while we were gone, so that she could walk to the Healing Center.
The Healing Center was not unfamiliar, being that I spent a lot of time there. Not so much because I was always hurt, but because Elwin was a family friend and had been an extended authority figure in both my parents' lives. He was family and since he watched me grow, he allowed me to skip classes every once and a while and feign headaches. Well, I feigned headaches and he pretended to believe me.
Upon entrance there were pictures posted on the door of my parents when they were younger--my dad's favorite was the one of my mother in the mastodon costume from when she was doing the opening ceremonies back when she was a level 3. It was weird to see random things from when my parents were my age and even younger, it was hard to believe there was a time when they were kids themselves. Elvin History was especially weird considering there was an entire section focused on learning about them. While my dad was definitely one to brag, my mom acted a bit more humble about the fact their names showed up in one of my textbooks.
I was a bit impressed that when we had reached her the fire was gone and the school was up in flames. Usually when people manifested they went a bit crazy for a the first few weeks and couldn't control it. I know when I manifested in telepathy I accidentally transmitted thoughts to people when I was trying to think about them to myself. I also would read people's minds when not trying to.
We sat her down and Elwin checked her out while I took out my imparter and called on my Aunt Marella, explaining the situation. I figured she might be able to help considering she had most likely gone through the same thing at one point. She said she'd be there soon and was true to her word.
Nova seemed to be shaking off her shock just as my aunt entered. "I'm not in trouble, am I?" she questioned, fear in her eyes. I couldn't blame her, she had never been in trouble in her life most likely. She seemed like she would be afraid of simply getting the wrong answer on a test and making her teacher's feel disappointed. Meanwhile, I got lunch detention on the regular and the school hallways during times I was supposed to be in classes seemed to be my domain.
Aunt Marella laughed at her words and answered, "No, there's nothing wrong with what happened. It's completely natural, and it was barely a flame. No one got hurt, which is the best part."
Elwin was looking over Nova's hands as my aunt was talking, and he decided to add on, "No signs of accidentally burning herself and no clothes looked scorched." He gave her a wink before saying, "We're looking at a pro, right here."
She looked down at her feet as if they were the most interesting thing in the world, but I could tell she was nervous with the way she held herself. Marella asked her in a gentle tone, one I had rarely hear before," Do you want to walk with us to Master Leto's office so we can talk about what just happened?"
She nodded and hopped off the table which she was sitting on, ready to leave. "Before you go," Elwin interrupted, "I think she needs to eat something. This is cutting into lunch time. Also for you, Mr. Foster." He narrowed his eyes at me.
"I'm fine," I told him. I had hidden some snacks in my bag and ate them throughout my morning session when my mentor wasn't looking, so honestly I wasn't planning to eat anyways.
"You should head to lunch," Nova said, looking a bit too happy as she gave the suggestion. It was just more confirmation that she probably didn't like me, I cursed Blythe's weird obsession with hating everyone in our family for some odd reason.
"Actually," my aunt interjected, "He's going to have to be there with us when we speak with Master Leto." Then she turned to me, her eyes narrowed similarly to Elwin only a few moments earlier. "But don't think I'm giving you a free pass out of school, your mother would have my head. You're only allowed to come because we need you."
I held my arms up at her words, holding back a laugh at her no-nonsense tone. All my parents friends were like extra parents and didn't think it a problem to assert that. "I get it, no need to rat on me," I told her.
While generally she was probably the most cool of all my aunts and uncles, maybe because she was the only one of them who wasn't actually a parent, she did take the opportunity to start lecturing. "Weren't you supposed to be in detention anyhow? What were you even doing with her? You know one day you're going to give your mother an aneurysm with the things to do."
I almost gave the retort that my father was more likely to give my mom an aneurysm than me, but held back. Instead I watched as Elwin pulled her to the side and gave her a meal substitute elixir, most likely created by my Uncle Dex or maybe Dex's father. I would be able to tell if I was given one myself. Dex's tended to taste better, while his dad's tended to fill one up better.
Elwin explained what the elixir was and she thanked him before taking a sip. The way she reacted, which was not by gagging, I knew my Uncle Dex made it. I decided to speak up and remind them, "We need to go." I didn't want to rush them, but I was bit a anxious to get this meeting over and done with. It was obvious the girl didn't like me, and the sooner I could leave the most likely more comfortable she could get. I know when I manifested and things changed I didn't want to spend all that exciting time with someone I didn't like.
She chugged back the rest of her meal substitute before we left the Elwin's office and found ourselves outside Master Leto's. After Aunt Marella knocked he called for us to come in and told Nova to take a seat, smiling at her. "What seems to be the trouble?" he asked everyone, although his focus was on Nova.
Her gaze met mine and I realized that she was afraid to answer the question, so I answered on her behalf, "Novena manifested as a pyrokinetic and scared herself half to death." I figured maybe using her actual name would give me some points.
"A pyrokinetic?" Master Leto looked towards her, and she nodded. "Fascinating, that must be why you're here." He looked towards my aunt knowingly.
"I'm sorry," Nova finally spoke up. "I have no idea who you are."
Never did that occur to me, I suddenly felt bad for not taking the time to introduce her. Aunt Marella was no offended at all, and instead laughed as she held her hand out to be shook. "I'm Marella Redek, I'm practically Eamon's aunt."
Her eyes widened as she took my aunt's hand. "Wait--You're a pyrokinetic!"
She nodded and informed Nova, "Eamon called me and asked me to come here and help you out, but you seemed to put your fire out all on your own just fine. Now I'm here to make sure that you are properly taken care of." She looked at Master Leto as she added on, "And I'm also offering service as a possible mentor in the subject."
Master Leto must have been as surprised as me as he questioned her. "I thought you weren't taking in a job?"
"I know what it's like not to have a proper teacher, and the only person I trust to teach her that isn't me is my teacher," Aunt Marella replied. I had forgotten that there was a time when he had trained my aunt just as she had manifested.
After sharing a look he turned back to Nova and told her, "You'll definitely have to be properly trained, of course this is before you were born so you won't remember but we went through decades of suppressing all those with the pyrokinetic ability in the Elvin world and what resulted was plenty of the stuff that has now been covered in your Elvin History class. If those kids had been properly trained and allowed to exercise their ability, we wouldn't have gone through those problems."
"The fire gets too addicting if you don't know how to properly control it," Aunt Marella added. "I can help you out with that if you'll let me."
"Oh." Nova cringed at her own words, and despite the fact I wasn't an empath, I could still feel her nerves from across the room. "Okay, I think it'd make me feel more comfortable with you as my teacher. Does it sound mean if I ask what my other options would be? They don't really say how many pyrokinetics there are and I just wonder."
"Of course it's not mean," Master Leto replied. "But I will tell you there's really no better training you'll get than Marella Redek, I can attest having trained her myself."
Nova's eyes widened. "Wait you're a pyrikinetic?"
"No, but when I first manifested things were different," Marella spoke up. "Pyrokinetics weren't allowed to manifest, and if you manifested you kept quiet about your ability. I was trained in secret so I could help Sophie Foster, I was like a secret weapon I guess you could say. No one expected a pyrokinetic on our side."
Nova's surprise continued. "You worked with Sophie Foster?"
"Whoa, Poopy," I spoke up using her nickname, "aren't you behind on times?" Being best friends with Blythe, she had to know about everything to do with our family, even more than what's explained in the textbooks. "He was literally the-"
"Uh, enough of that," I was cut off with a glare from Master Leto. "First of all, only certain people know in confidence. If I hear you've told anyone about what you were about to tell her, I'm telling your mother directly. Your father too."
"I haven't," I immediately responded, a bit afraid at the way his eyes narrowed in my direction. It was true, though. My only real friend was Mika, considering Serena was as rude as they came so I avoided her like the plague when not in public. And he was part of the group of people to know most likely. Also, I didn't spend my time talking about the weird guy who practically made my mom in a science lab before injecting her into a human.
"Second of all, we don't go around calling students feces," he finished his statement.
"Oh, it's just her nickname," I informed him, smiling a bit. I tried not to pay attention to how cute she looked when she got annoyed. The ways her eyebrows furrowed and hands blenched in anger was slightly entertaining.
"What do you think made me so mad I literally became a pyrokinetic?"
"Me calling you poopy?" Suddenly I felt slightly bad, and also a little confused. "Wait what?"
"It's more than that," she replied, but didn't say any more on topic. I was hoping to get an explanation when she instead turned back to Master Leto and asked, "Can we not tell my parents about this?"
"What's wrong with your parents knowing?"
"I don't want anyone to know," she told him, and I was confused. From what I was aware, both her parents were talentless. They would most likely be ecstatic to hear that their daughter manifested, and in such a rare ability as well. "I hear the way everyone speaks about the ability," she decided to explain. "I just want to be trained to control it and then move on with my life."
"It's such a rare ability, though. It has to be reported to the council," he replied, his expression showing slightly disappointment.
When she mentioned not wanting anyone to know, my mind traveled back to the story my parents had told me a million times: the story of how they met. I thought over what my dad always said. She thought she could fool everyone, but she couldn't fool me. Even though I didn't know exactly what was going on, I knew she was special. It made complete sense when I found out she was a telepath. Maybe that could work.
"Wait, what if you do what they did for mom?" I questioned. They both looked at me in confusion. "Dad says that when mom first came here no one knew she was telepathic until after she was kidnapped. Can't you do that for her?"
I was about to fix my wording so they understood I wasn't implying we would keep Nova's abilities a secret until she was kidnapped, like it was implied that there would eventually come a time where she would be, but Nova replied before I could. "What did they do for her exactly?"
Aunt Marella answered, saying, "Only the council and the Vackers as well as her telepathy mentor knew officially. Of course Black Swan members knew as well, but they were still hidden at the time. On her schedule they were able to pass her ability training sessions as written down as a remediation class where supposedly she was catching up the Elvin world since she came from the humans."
"Can't we do something like that?" She turned to Master Leto. "I really just want to stay on the down low."
He took the time to think about it, nodding slightly as he replied, "I'll have to tell the council members, that goes over my head. I can write it off that you're taking a one on one special ability push class with Miss. Redek. If anyone asks it was requested by your parents because they got paranoid with them being talentless."
"And I can keep it from them?" There was hope in her eyes as she asked the question, and it made me wonder about her parents. All my cousins were as close with their parents as I was with mine. We all knew that if there came a time where it felt like everyone was against us, there would always be at least our parents there who we could trust.
Then I thought of my dad, and I knew that he had bad relations with his parents. His mom was an evil psycho and his dad was just a genuine jerk. I doubted Nova's parents consisted of a member of the Neverseen and an annoying, obnoxious person like my dad's. Still, it was possible that they were like my dad's parents before he realized his mom was psycho--pretty much negligent and full of possible high expectations.
I would understand why she didn't want them to know if that case. Still, it was odd the fact she wasn't close with her parents wasn't brought up by Blythe. In fact, I could have sworn Blythe had said that Nova adored her parents and vise versa.
Master Leto let out a large sigh as he told her, "We'll have to see with the council about that. We'll have to call in a meeting with them."
"Do you want me to hail my sister?" I asked him, figuring it would be the quickest way to reach a councilor. It was still weird thinking about the fact she was a councilor, she had only been elected a year prior but fit in so well. Still, ever since she had become one I could see the looks in all my mentor's eyes and the expectations.
It was hard being the youngest of such a prominent family sometimes. Not even looking to my mom, because she was an entire phenomenon herself, but even my dad is one of the, if not the most, powerful empaths. Ever. My sister is one of three inflictors and the youngest councilor ever, something even my mom hasn't achieved. My brother is the current Team Valiant leader, becoming in charge at only thirteen years old--younger than my mom when she was put in charge of the original Team Valiant. He was also a powerful empath like my dad, but even further not a lot of people knew, but it was acknowledged, he's probably the best person I've ever seen utilize a lot of the skills so many ignored. My mother had once set a record of holding her breath for 46 minutes, which was beat my Ivan who held his breath for an hour and a half.
While it was nice that all three of us siblings inherited different abilities, the fact that I was the unlucky one to inherit my mother's telepathy sucked. While Ivan inherited my mom's weird genes that made he so he was better than our dad at empathy from the get go, and Leulla inherited mom's inflicting which she rarely used making it so Leulla was able to utilize it in a way mom has never, and probably would never, tried making it so she could be powerful in a way my mom wasn't. Sadly, my mom was known for her telepathy. I was teased from the get go with reminders that she manifested in telepathy at age five, so that right then meant I could never measure up.
Asking my mentor to teach me more about washing minds was a relief, and while it was tasking and I knew it reminded my mother about her human parents whenever I talked about it, I learned to enjoy it a lot. Plus, in a way I was the best at something the same way my siblings and parents have been.
That all being said, there was no way I was going to be on the council like my sister, especially that young. I knew I wanted to get married one day, the same way she knew she didn't.
"That would actually be great," Master Leto replied to me, breaking me from my thoughts.
I took out my imparter and after a few moments, my sister's face popped up. "What do you want, rat?" she oh-so lovingly asked, not even taking the time to say hello. I couldn't act shocked, and instead grinned at her. The last few times I had called had been to ask for favors, and I figured she was getting used to that.
"Master Leto needs to call a meeting with the councilors."
"Not all," he interrupted. "Just as many as you believe would be needed to discuss a new ability manifested by a prodigy."
"I don't understand."
"She's manifested a special ability," he emphasized the word special. "Maybe call your mother as well, we're going to be discussing something that has to do with something she went through firsthand and she might have advice on the topic."
"Okay I can get people there. You might have me, Emery, Terik, and Oralie at most though. Everyone is out on different projects at the moment. Also my mom is out with my dad I'm pretty sure, so he'll take the initiative to invite himself."
"I'd be more surprised if he didn't," he said and I held back a snort. "Thank you, Leu."
"No problem." She exited out of the call without saying anything else, and I couldn't deny feeling slightly disappointed at the lack of acknowledgement.
I decided to ignore that and instead turned to Aunt Marella and joked, "How much are we betting my dad comes?"
She scoffed. "Would you come in this situation?" I didn't even think about it, I knew the answer right away and nodded. "Then your dad will come. You're like Keefe on steroids."
"I'm taking that as a compliment," I replied, grinning. It was no secret I adored my dad and wanted to be just like him. He was my biggest role model, my biggest goal in life was to become as great of a man as he has.
"I'd be more surprised if you didn't," my aunt told me with a grin matching mine. "I haven't talked to your mom in a minute, though. Is she good?"
"Stressed," I answered, thinking about the amount of paperwork my mom had gone through the night before. After giving birth the Leulla she stopped her job as the correspondent between the Black Swan and the council and took on the job as the Team Valiant overall boss essentially. She was the one who received the jobs from the council that would be completed by Team Valiant and arranged them. She also was in charge of arranging candidates for the team to propose to the council.
She took on the job as it was less stress and gave her more time to raise us, but about the year before new members come in she becomes extremely busy. One of those times she was pregnant with me, and she never let me forget it. The year before the new members would be initiated my mom would have to arrange the new assignment for the team as with each new team assembled there would be a new program put into place that they would focus on. Then, she would have to go through hundreds of student candidates to narrow down to just around twenty-five that she would propose to the council based on their abilities, skills, and mentor descriptions. Then once those people were chosen as well as a team leader, she was in charge of assigning the singular tasks from the new assignment to each person and arranging everything based on those skills.
The three of us continued to discuss my mom and how she was doing, but every few moments I would glance in Nova's direction essentially checking up on her. She sat in silence on her own, not adding anything to the conversation. She was a bundle of nerves, and I worried how she would react when everyone would show up.
Eventually everyone arrived, Master Leto opening the door and gesturing for them to come in. My parents made sort of a beeline in my direction, my mother standing next to my seat and my dad standing on the other side of her. The councilors were slightly grouped up on my dad's other side, but Leulla was standing directly next to him.
She smiled in my direction as Master Leto started to explain the situation to everyone. Nova expressed wanting to keep a secret and after Councilor Terik explained how he didn't think it would work, I spoke up, saying, "That's why I brought up what happened with my mom."
"What about me?" My mom looked at me in confusion.
Master Leto explained my idea, and the adults started to debate the situation. I was in my thoughts when someone mentioned her parents being talentless, and without thinking about it first I randomly stated, "Maybe one of her parents isn't actually talentless, and was supposed to be a pryokinetic but never had the chance to discover the ability."
Most of the adults ignored my words, but Nova's eyes snapped in my direction. They all continued to debate with Nova about if she really wanted to hide her ability, but I could tell my mom felt for her when she requested to speak with Nova alone. We all decided to give them the chance to talk, and my dad nudged me on our way out, using his eyes and tilting his head slightly in Nova's direction to get a message across.
I rolled my eyes, but instead of ignoring him I simply playfully slapped him which led to him doing the same to me. Eventually we were just playfully slapping each other as we moved, and Leulla let out a little huff in our direction when she noticed.
"When we get back inside I'll give you a pass so your mentor knows that this time not coming to class wasn't ditching," Master Leto told me after we exited the room.
"You've been ditching class?" my dad questioned, eyebrow raised.
"Not all the time," I tried to defend myself, as if it would help.
"Listen, when everyone's gone I'll give you a high five," he replied, snickering slightly and I could see the distaste in the councilors' eyes. It was no secret a lot of people didn't appreciate my father's overall lack of respect in most authority. Still, he had been an immense help during the old Neverseen and Black Swan days, plus he was married to the legend that is my mother and is the father of one their own. They couldn't deny he was important.
"Dad, you can't be encouraging that," Leulla spoke up, although there was slight laughter in her words.
"I don't want to hear anything out of you, Miss. I'm-too-busy-to-answer-my-dad's-phone-calls," he replied, narrowing his eyes at her.
She rolled hers. "I literally was busy at that time. And I tried calling you an hour after and you did answer me!"
"It's what you get," he replied, grinning. "I've missed you, though, bud." He pulled her into a slight hug. "You have to give me an update after this."
"We should have another family meetup," Aunt Marella jumped in. "I haven't seen most of the kids in a while, it would be nice. Especially hearing from Celeste and Ivan, those two have become practical hermits since they moved to the elite levels."
"They're pretty busy with Team Valiant stuff, though," Leulla cut in.
I went to reply when mom opened the door up and said we could come back inside. Everyone went over find details before Master Leto wrote me out a pass that I could take to my mentor, who was probably sitting with his feet propped up and a book in his hands, relaxing. I saw the disappointment in his eyes whenever he realized there were days when I would come, but we had an agreement that so long as I was passing and understood what he was going over he didn't mind that I skipped. When other mentors noticed is when he gave me detention.
I heard Nova stop Aunt Marella as we were walking out, but I couldn't stop to listen to what they were saying. "You go straight to class, and if I get a call saying you've been skipping again, you're going to start doing my paperwork with me," my mother told me. "The whole long, grueling process. From scratch."
"Sounds like a blast," I replied. "I'll try to get familiar with it ahead of time so it won't take too long."
My dad laughed at my words. "You need to stop acting so smart," he told me, but the smile on his face showed he wasn't being too serious about it.
"I want you to reach out to that girl," my mom said, changing the topic. "If she's really planning to go through with all this, she's going to need a friend to talk to."
"I was already planning to reach out," I responded, shrugging. "She doesn't like me that much though. She's the best friend Blythe always talks about."
"Well, make her like you," my dad told me, rolling his eyes. "Be nice, and don't dump more Gulon poop on the poor girl's head."
"Yeah, that really wasn't my best moment," I told him, cringing at the memory.
He ruffled my hair playfully. "It's better to leave those big pranks to the professionals. Will you be good for the rest of school?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine," I said.
My mom leaned forward and pressed a kiss on my cheek. "Alright, we've got to go then," she said. "We love you and we'll see you when you get home, alright?"
"I love you guys, too," I said, waving them off as they walked away in the opposite direction. Holding my pass in my hands, I walked off in the direction of study hall. There was no way I was going to just walk into class normally after my eventful afternoon. I was just a bit upset there was no one to talk to about it. I remembered what my mom said about reaching out, and how Nova most likely needed a friend. Well, what she didn't realize is that I was mostly going to reach out because I needed a friend too. I could only hope it would turn out well.
