Part - 1:
Nandini's Pov:
I was in a deep sleep when I heard my husband shouting my name.
"Nandiniiiiiii!!!"
I sat up on the bed within a fraction of seconds, scared by his tone. But my sudden movement caused enormous pain in my lower part.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh" I cried.
It was the same horrible pain which he gave me last night. The only difference was that the intensity of the pain has decreased, compared to that of the last night.
"Tum ab tak utti(Wake) kyu nahi? Time dekha hai? Aath(Eight) bajne mein sirf aadhe gante hai. Aur tum ab tak taiyaar bhi nahi hui" He yelled at me, completely ignoring my cry.
I immediately stood up, wrapping the blanket around me properly, not wanting my husband to see my naked body. I know he saw it last night. But I still feel very uncomfortable being naked in front of him. My vagina was still aching, but the pain was a little bearable this time.
I panicked, knowing that I am late. I was supposed to wake up at five in the morning, get ready and make breakfast for everyone in this house all by myself as it is a ritual that the newly wedded bride has to cook breakfast and lunch for her new family without anyone's help on her first day at her In-laws' house. But here I am late on my first day itself and I didn't even wake up by myself. My husband woke me, instead of me waking him up. OH GOD!! I HAVE DONE A BIG BLUNDER! HOW CAN I BE THIS CARELESS!! NOW I WILL HAVE TO FACE THE CONSEQUENCES!!! WHAT PUNISHMENT IS HE GOING TO GIVE ME NOW? WAIT A MINUTE!..............WILL HE....WILL HE PUNISH ME LIKE LAST NIGHT? NOOOOOOOOOO!!! I CAN'T. I CAN'T TAKE THAT PAIN. ATLEAST NOT NOW. MY LOWER PART IS STILL ACHING. IF HE DID IT NOW, THEN THE PAIN WILL NEVER LEAVE MY BODY. IT WILL HAUNT ME LIKE A GHOST!!!
I was going to answer when I realized he said some word which I didn't know the meaning of. HE SAID 'THAIM DEKHA HAI'!! WHAT IS THAIM?
"Man...ik j..i, ky..a hu.m ku..ch po..och sak..the ha.i?" I asked still being frightened. And you know what? Now I should be more scared because he is fuming with even more anger than before.
He grabbed my shoulders and roared digging his nails into my skin "Maine tumhe kuch poocha(Asked) hai. Aur tum jawaab dene ke bawajood(Despite) tumhe mujhse poochne ki anumati chahiye? Kya yahi sikhaaya(Taught) tumhare maa-baap ne tumhe ki jab mann(Heart) karo tab utho aur pathi ke sawaal(Question) ka jawaab math dena? Bolo, kya yahi sikhaaya?"
Tears were continuously rolling down my cheeks due to the pain in my shoulders and my heart too. His words directly stabbed my heart, making it to bleed. OUCH!!! THAT HURTS!! VERY BADLY!
I KNOW I HAVE DONE MANY MISTAKES ON MY FIRST DAY ITSELF. AND I AM REALLY SHAMEFUL FOR DOING SO. BUT WHY DOES HE HAVE TO BRING MY PARENTS IN BETWEEN? IF HE WANTS HE CAN SCOLD ME, HURT ME, OR EVEN HUMILIATE ME. WHY DOES HE HAVE TO QUESTION MY PARENTS UPBRINGING? WHY?
I wanted to say no but nothing came from my mouth. Instead I nodded my head in no while tears were not stopping from my eyes.
"Tum kya gungi(A Mute) ho joh kuch bhi bol nahi sakhthe? Bhagwan ne tumhe muh(Mouth) iss liye diya thaki tum apna pathi ko jawaab de sakhe. Par tum yaha pathi ko jawaab dene ke bajaay(Instead) apne muh ko sab cheezon(Things) mein lagaa(Indulge) rahi ho joh bekhaar(Useless) hai" He said with so much sarcasm as well as anger.
"Naa..hi. Ma..nik j..i, hu..m.he ma.af kij.i..ye. Hu..mse bo.ho..th ba..dhi ga..lthi hu.i ha..in. Hu..m ye.h ga..lthi dob..ara ho..ne na..hi dain...ga.i(Will)" I said with great difficultly, still being badly hurt by the fact that he had actually questioned my parents upbringing.
"Galthi? Yeh joh tumne kiye woh galthi nahi hai. Gunah(Sin) kehthe hai. GUNAH!! Aur iss gunah keliye tumhari saza hai ki,tum subah ka naashta(Break fast) khane ke badh, kisi ki madad(Help) ke bina, iss poore haveli ka safaayi(Clean) karogi. Woh bhi dopahar ka bhojan(Lunch) ke samay(Time) se pehle" He said sternly. "Agar tum iss kaam mein asafal(Fail) hui na, tho tumhe aaj bhojan(Lunch) nahi milega. Aur haa bhojan banaana(Make) bhoolna(Forget) math(Don't)" He added and went towards the cupboard, leaving me rooted at my place.
WHAT?? DID HE...DID HE JUST SAID ME TO CLEAN THIS HUGE......NO, HUGE ISN'T THE WORD. COLOSSAL!! YES COLOSSAL IS THE RIGHT WORD TO DESCRIBE THIS HAVELI. HE SAID ME TO CLEAN THIS COLOSSAL HAVELI ALL ALONE. THAT TOO BEFORE THE LUNCH TIME? NO WAY!! IT ISN'T POSSIBLE!! I HAVE TO EVEN COOK LUNCH FOR EVERYONE. OH GOD!!! I THINK THERE WILL BE NO LUNCH FOR ME TODAY!! THAT MEANS I WILL BE HUNGRY TILL THE EVENING!!
He came to me and gave me a beautiful maroon & pink colored saree, and a breathtaking kundan set.
"Aaj tum yeh sab pehno. Aur jaldi se taiyaar hoke neeche jao(Go)" He ordered.
"Ji" I said.
I took the saree from him & my inners from my luggage, and went into the bathroom to get ready while my husband took his clothes and went out of the room, probably to get ready in the other room.
****
I came out of the bathroom after taking a bath, in the saree which my husband gave and my mangalsutra, with my wet hair open. A women should always wear something around your neck in our village. Unmarried girls wear a chain or a dhaaga(Sacred Thread) while married women wear a mangalsutra in their place. We were not allowed to remove them from our neck, not even when we sleep. The only situation where we could remove them was while we bath. And if by chance a girl's neck is naked, then she is considered to be shameless and equal to a slut exposing her skin. I used to wear a chain around my neck from the time I was born, until yesterday night after I got married. When I was a kid, I used to feel uncomfortable because of the presence of the chain. It used to irritate my skin, giving raise to many rashes. I even tried removing it many times and failed miserably as my mother would see it and scold me. But I didn't stop. I continued trying until one fine day, my father saw it and beat me black & blue which left many bruises on my skin. After that incident, I didn't even dare to touch. I preferred bathing with the chain for a one year and then back to the square one. That day was really horrible. But not more than last night.

I walked in front of the mirror and found Sambrani already kept without being lit. There was a match box beside it. Someone has kept there here for me to dry my hair. I lit it and smoke started coming out of it. I sat on the chair, kept in front of the mirror and picked the sambrani by its handle and began drying my hair using it.

After drying my hair, I tied my hair in a bun and wore the kundan set. I then put my saree's pallu on my head.

WOW!! I WAS INDEED LOOKING LIKE A NEWLY WEDDED BRIDE!!!
I turned to look at the condition of the room and was surprised to see the bedroom clean. There were no clothes scattered on the floor. No messy blood strained bedsheet like before. It was now replaced by a new one. Someone came to my bedroom and cleaned everything. OH GOD!! THAT MEANS SOMEONE SAW THE BLOOD ON THE BEDSHEET. WHAT MIGHT THEY BE THINKING? WILL THEY COME TO KNOW WHERE DID THAT BLOOD CAME FROM!! NOOOOO!!! THE THOUGHT ITSELF IS SO EMBARRASSING!!! THEN WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THEY ACTUALLY GET TO KNOW?
My chain of thoughts were broken by a knock on the door which was just closed but wasn't locked. I opened the door and saw a lady who is elder than me, standing in inexpensive clothes.
"Ji, kahiye" I permitted her to speak.
"Malkin(Madam), humara naam hai leela. Hum yaha ka ek naukarani hai. Humhe yaha badi malkin ne aapko rasooee(Kitchen) laane keliye beja hai" She said politely, standing outside the bedroom.
Oh Lord!! My mother-in-law is waiting for me in the kitchen, god knows for how long and here I am still in my husband's bedroom, wasting my time. How can I be so careless?
"Ji, chaliye" I replied and started walking along with her.
