It had been a month since the engagement and on a Saturday morning, Nandini was reading a novel when she received a call. A broad smile embraced her face as she saw the caller id

Nandini (picking up the call) – Hey Manik...Good Morning...!!

Manik – Good Morning Nandini...You sound really happy...Have I missed something..!!

Nandini – Well you haven't missed anything...I am generally a Happy Bird these days..!!

Manik – That's good to hear..!!

Nandini – Okay enough about me...How are you...??....how's your Yoga and diet plan..??

Manik – I am good too...and Nandini please can we not talk about Yoga, diet and anything even remotely similar to it...!!... I am tired...whoever I talk to be it Dadi or chacha-chachi or Mukti or my friends or your brother or even your family, all everyone thinks me worthy of is discussing the stupid yoga and tasteless diet... Can you be the exception please..??

Nandini – Why would I...??...I need to monitor your health just like anyone else...So what makes you think that I should be an exception...??

Manik – I'll tell you... The fact that you are in constant touch with my doctor to the extent that before me you get to see my reports, you message my yoga instructor every day before and after the session to know the status and on that note I wanna ask you don't you get bored with his repetitive replies...May be not for my cook gives you the daily dose of entertainment that you need by discussing with you my menu for the day which by the way is very boring and tasteless and when he explains you my expressions after every meal, you have a good laugh with him at my expense...so since you already know everything about my health, I thought maybe you could be an exception..!!

Nandini (Laughing) – Okay Baba...point taken Mr.Malhotra...!!... You are right the chat with Ranjan is funny, he explains your weird expressions with such minute details that I almost feel like you are eating right in front of me..He is good story teller I tell you, he infuses life into the narration...!!

Manik – I second that, whenever he used to come back from his village he had dozens of funny stories in his treasure box, and we all had a great laugh when he used to narrate them...but having said that he definitely exaggerates my expressions...I mean yes I don't like the food but I donot make those funny faces...Please..I am not a kid...!!

Nandini – Acha leave it..You tell me...Why did you call..??

Manik – Oh yes...I forgot..What are you doing today and for that matter tomorrow as well...??

Nandini – Nothing much...It is a weekend...I am at home...but why do you ask..??

Manik – So you are practically free...!!

Nandini – Ya...technically yes...Since summer is already here, I would probably utilize the time putting back my warm clothes and replacing them with summer ones...!!

Manik – Okay..

Nandini – But Manik...why do you wanna know my schedule this weekend..??

Manik – Because I am getting bored and I guess I would disturb you a lot this weekend..!!

Nandini – Hain..!! ...You know you are not making any sense right...!!

Manik – Will soon make some sense...wait and watch..Byee..!!

Saying this he disconnected the call leaving a confused Nandini behind

Nandini – What happened to him...Oh God...he will drive me crazy...Pagal Ladka...!!

Nandini kept her phone aside and got busy with the daily chores. She took a break to check her mails and then resumed with reading the novel. It was around afternoon, Nandini decided to cook lunch for herself when her doorbell rang. Nandini opened the door only to find no one in the corridor. Thinking it of as a prank played by kids of the society, she laughed off and closed the door. A few seconds later the doorbell rang again. She opened the door and the previous instance of finding an empty corridor repeated. This time before closing the door, she let out a playful warning. This act continued incessantly for next ten minutes leaving Nandini visibly irritated. Therefore, when the doorbell rang again, she opened the door with force and was about to shout but rather screamed with horror for she found 6 feet tall monster who suddenly jumped in front of her making a loud noise. She screamed and closed her eyes in fear. She then tried to peek through by opening her fingers and making a small slit only to get furious watching a laughing Manik who was going hysterical seeing a scared Nandini. Nandini pulled Manik in and started hitting him. Though initially Manik enjoyed her slaps, he felt a tinge of pain when she punched him in his stomach

Manik – What the hell Nandini...??

Nandini – What you called for it...who scares someone like that..??

Manik – Have you ever read Physics..??

Nandini – Yes...why...??

Manik – Good...then you must be aware..."Every action has an equal and opposite reaction"...!!

Nandini – What do you mean..!!

Manik – I mean this...!!

With that Manik started tickling her.

Nandini (laughing) – Manik stop..!!

Manik – Why should I stop now...You were being feisty na...come'on..Hit me now...!!

Nandini – That's not fair...how...can...I...hit you ...When...I...am....finding it hard...to...to..breathe...!!

Manik stopped as soon as he heard her. He cupped her face

Manik – What Nandini...are you okay...I am sorry yaar....it was just a prank..take a deep breathe Nandini...Come'on

Nandini – Manik...I ....

Manik – Yes Nandini....you..

Nandini – I....am not gonna leave you

And with that she started tickling him. Manik realized that "I can't breathe Drama" was her prank and started tickling her as well. Soon enough, Nandini's house echoed with their laughter and after about good fifteen minutes when either of them actually breathless, they stopped.

Nandini (catching her breath) – That was fun...but what are you doing here Manik..??

Manik (moved to the water filter to get some water to drink) – Why you are not happy seeing me here..??

Nandini – Now when did I say that...!!...Of course I am happy to see you here but we talked in the morning and you didn't tell me that you are coming over..So it took me by surprise..!!

Manik – Well that was the idea Madam...to Surprise you...!!...I came to Delhi today morning, had to a meeting with a client...the time I called you I was getting bored at the airport waiting to board the plane...I landed here around 11, went straight for the meeting which was here in Leela, Gurgaon.. finished it off and came here to surprise you..!!

Nandini – But you should have told me na Manik...I would have..

Manik - ...prepared a tasteless lunch for you...that is exactly why I didn't tell you... and before you start...listen I would be going back on tomorrow evening and till then just for this short span please forget the diet and all... please let's just enjoy.. You can speak with Rohtash uncle as well..I have taken the permission from him...

Nandini – Okay baba...Calm down...what had gotten into you... these days you just don't stop when you start talking... Relax...I don't need to talk to Rohtash Uncle for we had already decided that we would give you "Cheat Days" every now and then so that you don't feel bored...So chill...and I am really happy to see you here..Is anyone else coming too..!!

Manik – No it is just me...I came here for a project related to "Shelter"

Nandini – Really.. you are building something here..!!

Manik – Not exactly building...we would be renovating an old age home cum orphanage here...met the owners in the morning...The gentleman was an ex-army officer while his wife too had retired from government service...They build this place in the memory of their son who is a martyr...You know Nandini some people are so kind, positive and genuine that meeting them makes your day...I am looking forward to meet them again...In fact I have to go for the site visit in the evening...Why don't you come along..??

Nandini – That's a great idea...Infact I would like to meet them too... For now, let me arrange lunch for us while you go and freshen up.

Manik moved to the guestroom to freshen up while Nandini got busy with preparing the lunch. Post lunch, both of them retired to their respective room to take a short nap. Manik woke up around four and got up to look out for Nandini. He found her busy lifting suitcase rather trying to lift the suitcase since it was too heavy for her to pick up. Manik offered her help which she gladly accepted. She asked him to place it next to her cupboard.

Manik (after placing the suitcase) – What have you filled it with...Stones..how come it is so heavy..??

Nandini – Shut up...There aren't any stones in there...there are some books and a lot of clothes..!!

Manik – Oh yes ...I remember you told me you would be shifting the winter summer clothes...You know we never get to do this in Mumbai...!!

Nandini – Lucky you...you know this in itself is a task...Look at me all I have been able to do in past half an hour is to pick out the bags...I would probably arrange them once we come back at night..When are we leaving..??

Manik – Around five may be...are there any more bags to be pulled out...

Nandini – No I don't think so...God my back is aching...!!

Manik – Ofcourse it will ache...who asked you to become a weight lifting champion...You could have woken me up...I would have pulled out the bags... But no you have to do everything yourself...Now go and sit over there...I'll get us coffee and your back would get some rest.

Nandini – Why would you make coffee...You sit na..I will make it..!!

Manik (looking at her angrily) – Nandini..sit on the bed now and in case you have any pain relief spray with you..apply it..or else I'll get it from my bag..!!

Nandini – No wait I have one..thanks

Manik – Good then..get going..!!

Nandini – Monster..!!

Manik – Still better than you Dictator..!!

Nandini – Whatever...!!

Manik moved to the kitchen to make coffee while Nandini rested herself on the bed. Around five , both of them left for the site visit. On reaching the destination, they were welcomed the owners, Mr and Mrs Rajput. Nandini gelled in really well with both of them. They roamed around "Ashray" the old age home cum orphanage. Nandini gave her ideas too which were gladly acknowledged by Manik. Settling themselves in the garden, they started talking

Nandini – Ma'am I love the concept of this place.... All these kids need is love and warmth which the elders here have in abundance... and the kids return the affection with care something that the elders crave for...!!

Mrs. Rajput – You are right Nandini... You know the old couples here, their kids might have thought of them as a burden before leaving them here but look at these little ones, they never mind this so called burden on their light shoulders

Manik – That is because they never look at them as a liability...they are too naïve to look at the harsh realities of the world and somehow I feel these couples who have faced them all shall nurture these little angles in a way that they would be strong enough to face the hurdles in future

Mr. Rajput – You are right young man...But the fact the old couples or kids are abandoned by their own family is something that is beyond my understanding....especially parent, how can someone think of their parents as an encumbrance in their lives

Nandini – Because they have taken them for Granted sir...I am sure they miss them sometimes and whenever that happens they come over here and pay a visit...They really don't know what it is like waiting for a hug from your parents... for they never had to wait while some of us have to live a lifetime without it..

Mrs. Rajput – Same goes with the kids too... People leave them here or somewhere stranded for they have not really experienced the pain that comes with the helplessness of not been able to put them to sleep for they are gone into a deep slumber that lasts forever.

Mr. Rajput side hugged his wife while Manik comforted Nandini. The security guard came in with a bouquet and a card and handed it over to Mr. Rajput.

Mr. Rajput – Call Leela ji...It is her birthday today...!!...and Manik Nandini...if that's not a problem. Please stay back for the celebrations.

The security guard called Leela and other residants. Leela looked at the bouquet and the card that accompanied it. She left out a sarcastic chuckle accompanied by a drop of tear. The note read, "The older, The better, Happy Birthday Maa".

Leela – Look at this Mrs Rajput, the older the better....Better but not good enough to stay with him..!!

A kid called Amrit came forward

Amrit – Good that you are not good enough for then I got the best...Happy birthday Leela Maa...Come lets cut the cake

Riya (Another girl spoke) – Yes Leela Maa... We have a surprise for you... Cut the cake and then we shall see the surprise...!!

Leela blew the candles and sliced the cake. She fed a piece to everyone personally. The kids then asked everyone to settle down and then they started playing and dancing on Devanand's songs for he was their Leela Maa's favourite actor. Leela kept the holding the card sent by her son with so much force that it looked like she was crushing it with all the pain. Her face though told a different story. It had a smile that the little kids performance gave her. Mr. Rajput requested Manik to sing a song which he happily obliged.

Manik – Leela Maa...I hope I can call you that..(Leela nodded her head in a yes)...So this one is for you and every kid around

(Manik started singing, dancing along with the kids)

Manik moved to the food counter only to see Nandini surrounded by kids at the gol gappa counter. The kids were competing with her on who can eat the maximum number of Gol Gappas while Nandini's expression brought a smile on Manik's face. He picked out his phone and clicked a few pictures. He moved to the Gol Gappa counter and stood beside her

Manik – Nandini...Stop competing with kids...and plus you've already eaten so many of them...eat some food too... or do you plan to fill your stomach with these stupid gold gappa's

Nandini (stared at him stuffing her mouth with another one) – I am not competing and Gol gappa's are not stupid...!!

Manik – Really...they are so soggy...weird water and so unhealthy too...!!

Leela Maa – looks like you are not a fan of Gol gappa's Manik..!!

Nandini – Fan...haha...Leela Maa..this gentleman over her...he hates gol gappa's...!!

Mrs.Rajput – Really Manik...You hate them...You are probably the first and only human to hate them...!!

Saying this Mrs. Rajput and Leela Maa left the place..

Manik – Why are they so surprised..??

Nandini – For they don't know that humans still like gol gappa and in your case they have mistaken a monster to be a human and hence got confused..!!

Manik – Haha...Should I laugh at your pathetic joke...No I won't for I am not stupid. (He saw Nandini taking another one)..Nandini have you gone nuts...what is wrong with you..!!

Nandini – Shut up Manik..Let me eat..!!

Manik – Nandini enough...!!

Nandini – Manik...please na..just one more...!!

Manik – Absolutely No...You are not a kid Nandini...!!

Nandini – Exactly that is why I can decide for myself...!!

Manik – Nandini No...!!

Nandini – Manik Yes...!!

Manik – No...!!

Nandini – Yes...!!

"Nandu" had a "Statue" effect on Nandini and she freezed. It looked like both Manik and Nandini were playing the "Mannequin Challenge" since neither of them move for almost a minute. Their trance got broken when Gol Gappa in Nandini's hand broke and the water splashed on the her face

Nandini (rubbing her eyes) – Owww...shit...!!

Manik – Shit Nandini....are you mad...wait don't rub your eyes...(He grabbed a water bottle from the side).. Here splash some water in your eyes...Are you feeling better...Nandini speak no...tell me are you okay Nandini..!!

Nandini – Nandu...!!

Manik – What..!!

Nandini – You can call me Nandu whenever you feel like...I like the sound of it and I am fine..!!

Manik – Okay Nandu...you are such a dramaqueen...and before you say anything...No more gol gappa's...Understood...You want to eat something else..!!

Nandini – No I am full...!!

Manik – Really...a minute ago you were hungry for those round soggy things..and now you are full..

Nandini – they are so light...you donot need space in your stomach to eat them....!!

Manik – Light and still you are full...what an irony..anyways..I'll grab a bite for myself and then we shall leave..!!

Manik came back after having his dinner with Mr. Rajput.

Manik – Sorry yaar...I hope I wasn't too late...woh Rajput sir asked me to join him and I couldn't say No...I messaged you too..Why didn't you join us.. (Not getting any response from Nandini, Manik looked in the direction that was grabbing her attention...He found Leela Maa holding the bouquet and the card sent by her son...He placed his hand on Nandini's shoulder.. Nandini looked up to meet his eyes)

Manik – Nandini... what are you thinking!!

Nandini – I am wondering at the unpredictability that life offers...Look at her, she would have never thought her life would turn out to be this... Who should she blame for her state..??

Manik – Her Fate...She is a mother, she would never place a blame on her child for her motherly instincts won't allow her to do that...you know blaming one's fate is the easiest Nandu..for fate accepts the blame without offering any argument in defense

Soon Manik and Nandini bade everyone goodbye. Nandini made a mental note of visiting the place quite often since it was in the same city. On reaching home, they relaxed themselves in the balcony.

Manik – What now Nandini...??...What are you thinking now..??

Nandini – Nothing...!!

Manik – Shut up and tell me..!!

Nandini – Can I ask you something Manik..??...Okay I know I can ask you anything, anytime but for this you have to promise me you won't laugh or get angry..!!

Manik – Ok..I won't ...now speak..!!

Nandini – All these years when we stayed out of touch did you ever had a girlfriend...??

Manik – I what....??.....Nandini can you please repeat the question..??

Nandini – No I won't for I know that you've clearly heard what I said so tell me did you...??

Manik – No I didn't..!!

Nandini – Why..??...I mean you worked with so many beautiful girls...still no one..!!

Manik – You yourself have answered the question Nandini...I "worked" with them, I never had any personal connect with them...and the ladies I had a personal connect were Navya, Mukti and Alya, one being my sister while others being my best friend's girlfriends...so practically no one to date..!!

Nandini – Manik I am serious...!!

Manik – Okay Baba..I never had a girlfriend after you since I was drowning in the pool of guilt which made me in my mind a person incapable of being in a relationship, rather sustaining a relationship... I had broken enough hearts and people and I did not carry the strength to break anyone else... and so I refrained...I was not like I was short of proposals...I got many from the industry, from my architectural colleagues...there were girls who showed their interests but I politely refused...it did hurt them but then it was better than hurting them in future where the damage done takes years to repair..!!

Nandini – Are you still..??

Manik – Drowning in guilt...!!....No I am not...for you pulled me out of it...Thank you Nandini..!!...So you tell me Nandu...No boyfriends...!!

Nandini – Nope...Initially I was too busy overcoming loosing you and then came a suitor, rather a pshyco who thanks to you is now serving in jail...I mean after Madhyam, I lost the zeal to live life...Life became a routine...boring and monotonous....something I was bound to go through every day...There was nothing to look forward to... and that was until Abhi called one Sunday with the news that changed my life for good.. Now I am happy... I wake up looking forward to the exciting day ahead... It looks like the life has gotten back the purpose that was lost somewhere...!!

Manik – I am glad it did...hey don't you have to arrange the clothes...come let's do it..!!

Nandini – Manik Malhotra will help me arranging my cupboard..!!

Manik – Stop making a big deal out of it....The task will be done quickly with two of us doing it...Come let's do it..!!

Nandini – Okay Chalo..!!

Manik and Nandini started arranging the clothes. Nandini started pacing the warm clothes on the bed while Manik was assigned the task to start taking out summer clothes and placing them on the couch. Meanwhile they continued their conversation while working simultaneously.

Manik – Nandini...why didn't you tell Abhi about Madhyam..??

Nandini – I didn't wish to create any more troubles for them...You know Manik when Amma Appa passed away, I had promised myself, I'll make them and everyone proud of me...and look where I am today... I have given them nothing but trouble.. Making them proud is completely out of question... Appa wanted me to be a scientist but I just couldn't score well in Sceince...Amms used to say it was not my subject as I was the creative one...I went to NIFT and joined Space... You know when I got that album, I thought now everyone would be proud of me... but you and I both know how that turned out to be... It created more troubles and worries in their lives... Then I thought I would make my mark in studies and started preparing for higher studies...

Manik – Higher studies...??

Nandini – Yes that bag with stone actually has Entrance exam books... the entrances that I failed to get through thrice.. I told Amms the first time I gave the exam, she was excited and then was equally disappointed with my failure...I know she never says it out loud but she definitely wish to see me succeed but me I failed..every time...I didn't tell her only for the second and third time... I distanced myself from them for I was living in an illusion surrounded by negativity which planted a seed in my head..a dangerous seed which made me a looser and disappointment in my eyes and in my head, in others eyes as well... and that is why I did not wish to trouble them any more by telling them about Madhyam

Manik – Nandini....I cannot even imagine that you had turned so pessimistic

Nandini – Neither could I Manik...and now that I look back I realize what a fool I was... Thank you for bringing me out of that illusion Manik...thank you giving me hope...!!

Manik opened the bag that contained her books and placed them on the study table

Manik – These books they belong here...Nandu, promise me you would give yourself another chance...one last may be...and I have feeling this time you would succeed...!!

Nandini – I will try Manik..!!

Manik – That's the spirit and I will support you..!!

Nandini – Thank's Manik..!!

Soon the work got finished and both Manik and Nandini went off to sleep. They woke up next day and finished off their morning routine tasks before settling down for breakfast.

Manik – So I am in your city Ms. Murthy...tell me where should we go for lunch..!!

Nandini – I don't know..!!

Manik – What..Don't tell me after living here for five years, you haven't explored this city even a bit...!!

Nandini – Sorry to disappoint you...but I haven't..!!

Manik – Why...??

Nandini – I was too busy fighting with my demons that exploring anything else was out of question. Plus after Madhyam incident, I got too scared to go out alone, they were the scary years of my life Manik...Scariest rather..!!

Manik (taking her in a side hug) – Hey don't worry, we are past them now..right..!!

Nandini (resting her head on his checst) – Hmm

Manik – Okay so I have an idea...How about we stay at home...and order Pizza..!!

Nandini – Like old days..!!

Manik – yup like good old days..Let's just stay at home and talk..!!

Nandini – About that...Manik I wanted to know why did Fab 5 broke up..??

Manik – We actually didn't break up...we drifted apart...after you left, everyone was guilty in their own head and heart and looking at each other everyday intensified the guilt so we decided to not meet and focus on our respective careers apart from music... A few months later when mom dad passed away, you got them back to me...

Nandini – They were my only source to reach you..

Manik – I know.... I always wanted to know why did you forgive Mukti so easily while you took more than two years to forgive Navya..!!

Nandini – Mukti and I were not close friends Manik...she didn't know me that well and her judgement of me didn't affect me that much, also she was your sister she couldn't see you in pain which resulted in her outburst...and before Mukti, I had already made peace with Dhruv and Alya and with Cabir I wasn't fighting.. He was the constant always...So out of Mukti and Navya, forgiving Mukti was easy...Navya was my soulie... I looked at her as a sister I never had and her words pricked me deeper than Mukti's...

Manik – And so after two years when she won her first case you sent her the flowers as congratulations and I am assuming that was your way of forgiving her..!!

Nandini – yes..Cabir told me about her case... I remember that day, I was so worried and then Cabir messaged saying that she had won the case, I asked him to message me her address and then I sent the bouquet to her place for the mere fact that she has won filled me with so much happiness that all the grudges looked really small in front of it..!!...Acha enough of everyone else and self-talk...let's talk about US...Where are we heading Manik...What does the future hold for US..!!

Manik – Us...!!

Nandini – Yes Us..!!

Manik – You mean just the two of us..!!

Nandini – Yes Manik..Just the two of us...Rather ONLY two of us..

Manik – Okay if you insist...What do you think..??

Nandini – I really do not know what future has in store for us...but one thing trust myself and you with is that we would never go back to the Me and You phase ever again...

Manik – Thank You for trusting me Nandini...!!

Nandini – You really don't need to thank me Manik...You earned it...I donot know if I trust you with my life but I Trust you with my secrets Manik ...anyways so now your turn...What do you think about Us..??

Manik – Nandini... somewhere I have been the reason your broken dreams... I am sure that I would pull back every dream and bring it back to you for you for us..This time I am no letting you go...no matter what you say, this time I am here to stay with you forever...

Nandini – Forever it is..
