Chapter 17 - Runt of the day
No way am I going to stop now and do a victory dance. They're still after me. I continue to sprint away. I run on only to see that the perimeter has a freaking electrical gate surrounding it! What the actual hell!?
However, looking closer, I see that the entrance gate is open, but slowly closing and if I don't make a run for it now I'll be stuck here for all eternity. So I run on, pushing myself, dirt flying beneath my feet with every step I take. I can hear people running behind me. Please don't catch up with me! I plead.
As I reach the gate, I run through just as they're about to fully close. It misses me by a few seconds. This causes whoever is behind me to stop in their tracks and wait for it to reopen. I'm not about to stay and wait for them to join me on my journey back home, so I run towards the open road. Once I reach it, it's only a matter of left or right.
Crap.
I don't know which way we came from.
Screw it.
Being in the middle of nowhere, I decide to go right.
The area looks deserted. Patches of grass and bushes scattered at random, mountains and rocky hills conveying a background scenery. Only a few ruined buildings every here and then. If I didn't know any better I'd say we're isolated somewhere in the desert. Far away from any city, far away from civilization. Basically, the perfect location to torment captured civilized civilians.
They might as well place a sign saying:
'Captured Civilised Civilians.
We get them so you don't have to.
Make your pick. Pay the price.
The runt of the day:
Vivian Harper Maldonado.'
While running, I look slightly back and only then do I see how huge the concrete prison warehouse is that I've just escaped from. Then I notice the gate beginning to open. Not wanting to see who's chasing after me, I continue to sprint forward. Please let there be a town nearby or a police station or telephone for the least, I think to myself.
I run pass a handful of ruined buildings. These buildings are so torn down that my safety in it would most certainly not be secured. They'll instantly find me. Broken windows, non-existing roofs, and doors, half the walls are missing, definitely not where I want to try and hide. These buildings are practically transparent.
In the distance, I see a forest of trees and bush shrubs. Knowing that I have better chances of getting away from them going there than what I do if I stay back here, I run towards it. This is the longest I've ever run in my entire life.
I don't know for how long I'll be able to continue pushing myself. My body's already weak by the number of bruises and internal injuries. Not to mention the fact that I haven't eaten. Steven took my breakfast away from me this morning. Not that he said so, but I'm pretty sure that he did.
My organs are crying from the pain I'm putting them in. Salty, sticky water pushes through my pores causing my skin to itch. I'm sweating like a sumo wrestler, with a stinge that could knock out any beast.
I get closer to the trees. Next thing I know my body soars through the air and I land face flat, giving the ground an uninvited hug. A hug that knocks the wind out of me. I can feel my body wanting to shut down, but knowing that they're still after me I can't allow it to happen.
I force myself to get up. I place my palms against the ground to push my body up but fall back down. I can't seem to get up. My chest heaves up and down. The panic worsens. Tears threaten to spill and stream down my face. I feel weak and vulnerable and I hate this feeling. I need to be strong and independent.
I need to be back home.
Come on Vivian! You can do this! So what you tripped? Get back up! Don't give up just yet. You've come this far. Just a little bit further girl. Jess is surprisingly still with me.
I take a deep couple of breaths before attempting again. With my palms on the ground, I count to three then push my body up. Being successful, I hurriedly stand up.
"Vivian! Stay right where you are!" shouts Frank.
I hear his voice booming from a distance behind me. Frank's authoritative tone sends shivers down my spine. The hair on my skin rises in all sorts of directions. Not daring to turn around, I sprint off as soon as I'm back up on my feet. I can hear them picking up speed, getting closer to me with each step. I run faster, getting closer to the trees. I won't allow them to get me.
I make sure not to trip this time knowing there are thousands more leaves, twigs, sticks, and tree roots all over the ground. Running past the trees and shrubs, looking for a place to hide, I hear the snapping of twigs in the distance behind me as the men are still after me.
"Vivian!... There's no point in running!... Vivian!" Frank continues to shout.
I decide to start making turns. Running a straight path never works out for anyone in the movies. Neither does screaming for help and giving away your location. That's absurd. You're trying to get away from your kidnapper, yet you go around yelling while expecting to lose him in an area he probably knows pretty well.
I grab onto a tree to make a sharp turn, just then does something latch onto my arm, throwing me off guard. It pulls at my arm with such force, I slam into another tree appearing out of nowhere. My body instantly dropping to the ground. While catching my breath, my attacker turns away and shouts, "I found her!"
I don't recognize that voice.
Instead of figuring out who it is, I raise my foot and kick his future kids goodbye. He immediately drops to the ground holding his crotch. I quickly get up to continue running, but he grabs at my ankles and I fall down, landing hard on my stomach. Without thinking, I grab the rock beneath my fingers and turn over to throw a swing towards him just as he latches higher onto my legs. I hit him right on the side of his head. The force of the blow being so powerful that he's instantly unconscious. Instead of dropping to the side, his body fall directly on me. Just then I hear rumbling in the trees, the sound of twigs snapping and leaves crunching. They're close. To close for comfort. I struggle to pull my legs out from beneath his motionless body. He's heavy, bulky, rock hard, toned, muscular body.
For a delivery boy, he sure does have a nice body... Jess, now is not the time!
I push one of his shoulders up and away from the ground, causing his body to lean to one side. Giving one of my legs enough time to slip out.
"Where are you hell cat!" Oh no please, not Steven.
Letting go, delivery boy's body shifts the opposite way to the ground and I quickly pull out my other leg. Steven's face pops up in the distance, but he doesn't spot me as he doesn't think to look down. I hold my breath, making sure I don't make a single sound. As soon as he turns his head away from me, I quickly get up and take off running once again.
"Hell cat!... Stop!" Steven's voice echoes through the trees as he spots me running away. I make even more hell-bent turns trying to lose these monsters.
Running for my life and freedom, I finally come across a big tree surrounded by other bush shrubs. Just behind the shrubs is a place to hide, as there's an unnoticeable hole in the tree which I only saw when I split the shrubs apart. Not giving it another thought, I force my body behind the shrubs and quickly lay down, hiding in the comfort of a tree.
While laying here, I can hear voices faintly yelling my name. My breathing has yet to be controlled. My pulse still racing. I decide not to get too comfortable, as anything can happen at any time. My eyes pierce through the open gaps of the bush shrubs, heavy on the lookout of any movement.
"Come out, come out wherever you are..." Frank says loudly as he walks through the trees. His voice isn't close enough for him to find me, but my heart still hasn't moved back to my chest. It's currently lodged in the back of my throat.
Just then a pair of black combat boots appears only a few meters away from me. "We do not have time for these childish games! So stop fucking around and find her!" he yells at Frank.
My body stiffens at the sound of Steven's voice. Heaven alone knows what he'll do to me once he finds me. I quickly cover my mouth so that my heavy breathing doesn't draw his attention.
The sounds of Frank's footsteps draw nearer as Steven begins to walk away.
Hisssss... hissss...
No no no no no!! A SNAKE!? I cannot believe my ears and soon my eyes either. A mother Mary huge ass snake is in the damn bush shrub I just so happen to be hiding behind.
"What's that?" Frank questions and Steven stops walking.
"Shhh.." is all I hear him say before the silence grows deafening and two pairs of combat boots make their way in front of me.
