Chapter 6
The weekend away with Hayoon had been a success. We spent almost the whole time on the beach, playing in the sand and in the water, granted, I had to fight Hayoon almost every hour to apply more sunscreen but she had a blast. On our last night I noticed despite my best efforts she managed to get light sunburn causing her discomfort. That made me run to the pharmacy to get cooling gel for her skin.
I sighed as I packed our belongings while Hayoon was sleeping deeply. I wished we could stay longer. It had been so long since I'd felt this close to her. Felt like her dad... but I had responsibilities and as her dad I needed to make sure I got her back to school. She was already missing two days this week. I'll just plan something for winter break so we don't lose this closeness.
I'm sure Taehyung is already going stir crazy at home. I highly doubt he took my advice to go out, I'm sure he's anxiously waiting for his best friend to be back home and Yoongi has already texted me to "Check Up". I'm sure he's missing my skills. He was never one to put much effort into questioning our marks.
I chose it early so Hayoon could rest for tomorrow. She didn't put up much of a fuss when I got her ready, she was too tired from all the fun activities she did the past few days. I simply slipped a jacket over her pj's and carried her down to the car that was waiting. In a matter of no time we were on the plane back home.

The ride home was less peaceful. Hayoon had gotten enough sleep the night before and on the plane so when we shuffled into the car to head home, she was nothing but a ball of energy, ready to see and tell her Uncle TaeTae all about our trip.
She didn't say it, but it was as clear as day she missed him. They've been inseparable ever since Taehyung came to live with us. In the last few years, it was Taehyung who had seen her more than I have and it broke my heart. Yesterday she kept mentioning him and even suggested calling him and I would've done it, but by the time we had gotten back to the hotel and she was showered, she could barely keep her eyes open.
"Hayoon calm down a little baby, we are almost home and I'm sure Uncle TaeTae is just as excited as you are," I say exasperated.
When we walked inside the house I was not expecting the quietness that greeted us. Usually Taehyung has light music in the background, but there is nothing. Another thing is he is not here to be the first to greet Hayoon. I thought he would be anxiously waiting to see her, but not at all.
Dropping the bags in the hall I noticed tossed shoes leading into the living room. Quietly walking closer I saw Taehyung face down on the couch passed out, there was drool staining the cushions. Looks like he did follow my advice after all and went out to have fun.
I was planning on leaving him there to rest when my little girl ran past me screaming at the top of her lungs for her Uncle TaeTae. That made my brother jump up from his position on the couch and search for the tiny person calling out to him. His face and eyes are as puffy as ever, hair a birds nest, and clothes wrinkled.
Hayoon bulldozes into him, barely giving him enough time to catch her as he lets out a loud "oof."
Finding me staring at him, he croaks out, "You're back."
"Looks like you had fun," I laugh, taking in his drunken appearance.
"Something like that," Taehyung mumbles, holding his head, which was probably in pain.
Taehyung adjusts Hayoons position, pulling her up into his lap as she hugs him tightly.
"I missed you Uncle TaeTae," She whines loudly and tucks her head into his neck.
"I missed you too Yoon," Taehyung coos back squeezing her tightly.
I roll my eyes at the over the top greeting. These two are something special. It wasn't even a week, it was only three days they were apart!
"We did so many fun things Uncle TaeTae," Hayoon tells him excitedly and loudly, too loud for her hungover uncle.
"Really? How about you tell me la-" Taehyung got interrupted as Hayoon paid him no mind and began her story.
"First, we got on a plane..." she loudly recounts the events of the weekend.
I gave Hayoon a few minutes to get her excitement out of her system and once she calmed down I picked her up from Taehyung's lap and sent her on her way to her room to "unpack." She was going to make a mess yet it was all for Taehyung's well being.
"Thanks," he sighs, plopping down on the sofa.
"Want some lunch?" I ask laughing at his distressed state.
"Please, you're a lifesaver," It came out muffled as Tae's head was buried in the cushions.
In the kitchen I took out the ingredients to make a quick lunch. I bet it was only a matter of time until my adorable daughter came downstairs in search of food. As I cooked Taehyung dragged his feet and sat on the dinner table waiting for me to finish.
"So, what did you do?" I ask him, wanting to get to the bottom of how he got to this state of hungover.
"Saturday I went to the club," he mumbles, ruffling his hair.
"Nice, you had fun?" I nod, focusing on the chicken in the pan.
"Yeah, I actually met a guy."
His words made me stop in my tracks and I turn to stare at him with wide eyes,
"I didn't know you were..." I let my voice dwindle off not actually saying it.
I have no problem with his brother being gay, but it had never been brought up before. I assumed he was straight. Taehyung stares back at me confused when realization strikes him,
"HEY! I LIKE BOOBS!" He quickly defends.
"I made a friend you idiot," he then scoffs.
"Hey, I'm not judging it's okay, I accept you as you are, you're my brother," I quickly add, in case he's trying to save face.
"Then you should accept that I like WOMEN" he rolls his eyes at me.
"Anyway, I hung out with him again and another friend yesterday which led to too much drinking. Somehow, someway, I got home and crashed on the sofa"
"I'm happy you went out and socialized with people your own age," I hum, letting a peaceful silence take over.
During lunch Hayoon recounted everything we did on Jeju Island to her uncle. Taehyung listened attentively, wincing now and then because of my little sunlights high pitched voice. That led me into sneaking him two painkillers for his headache which he gladly took instantly.
Soon after lunch Hayoon asked if Uncle Yoongi would be coming over to visit since we were back. Which led Tae to again argue with her that Yoongi isn't her real uncle, which Hayoon stubbornly disagreed, stating that he was in fact her uncle.
I set Hayoon down for a nap once the argument started to get a little heated. Tae crashed on the sofa pouting while I unpacked and started a load of laundry, when I looked back over to him he had passed out and was snoring on the couch mouth wide open.
All in all it was relaxing, having some time by myself. After I had unpacked everything and had the laundry going, I decided to call Yoongi. Going over to the backyard and sitting on the hammock I dial his number.
"Hello?" His rough voice answers.
"Hey Yoongi, just called to let you know I'm back," I tell him, softly, pushing off my feet to swing in the hammock.
"Did Hayoon have fun?" he promptly asks about his sweet niece.
"She did. She looks like a little lobster," I chuckle, remembering her red cheeks and sun kissed skin. "She was also asking if you would come and visit?
"I'm glad she had a good time. I'll probably go around this week to visit her," he says in what one might think is indifference.
"How was work?"
"Same old, same old," he sighs.
"No new leads?" I ask with hope in my voice.
"I haven't found anything yet, sorry," I could feel the apology in his voice.
He didn't need to apologize, it's not his fault. Besides, he's always been the one to help me out whenever we had anything regarding what happened to my sweet Byeol.
"It's alright I'm sure something will come up," a defeated sigh escapes me involuntarily, "I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay, tell Hayoon Uncle Yoongi says Hi."
"I will," hanging up the phone I let it fall beside me.
It was frustrating the more time passed the less leads we had, at this point we were grasping at straws. Choi Jihoon was nowhere to be found; it's as if he disappeared off the face of the earth.
That in itself was suspicious someone like him doesn't simply disappear. I'm not going to lie, there's been times where I've felt like giving up, but then the memory of Byeol and how he hurt her comes to mind and pushes me to find that bastard. He left me without a wife and Hayoon without a mother. He had to pay for that.

Later that night Hayoon is playing in the living room with Taehyung, who calls me over to them worried.
"I think Hayoon is coming down with a fever," he spits out, holding my daughter in his grasp and touching all over her face making her giggle.
I swat his hands away, delicately placing the back of my hand on her forehead to feel it overheated more than the sunburn she had but not too bad.
"We'll give her some Tylenol. She should be fine by tomorrow." I say as I turn to make my way to the kitchen.
"I don't know Hyung," Taehyung starts, "She should stay with me tomorrow to make sure she recuperates completely and doesn't spread it."
"Taehyung, she'll be fine, she can't miss more school." I argue back.
"They aren't even doing work because of the parent teacher conference on Wednesday!" He argues with me.
"All the more reason for her to go, we don't want some uppity teacher to be on my ass about Yoon missing school" I argue back.
"Oh, please what's an extra day going to do?" He begs with puppy dog eyes, something Hayoon imitates as she had been listening to the conversation.
I know Taehyung missed her after three days of being apart, but is that enough to make her miss school? As I think it over I stare at their faces with big eyes and pout, I know I should put my foot down and say no but I'm weak and don't have it in me.
"Alright, fine, but you have to call the school and tell them!" I sigh in defeat.
"You got it!" he says with a wide smile and a clap.
In the kitchen I search for the Tylenol and the small cup it has. I fill it to the indicated line and prepare a small cup of water. Hayoon saw the pink liquid as soon as I stepped into the room, a frown forming on her lips.
"Hayoon, your medicine," I coo, sitting in front of her.
"I don't wanna," she furrowed her eyebrows, turning her back to me.
"Please, don't make this difficult," I sigh, knowing the drama this little girl was going to do.
"I'm fine, I don't need medicine," she says just as a cough takes over her.
"Tae, help me out here!" I hiss in his direction.
"Yoon, you need to take the medicine or you'll get sicker," He says half heartedly.
"I don't want to, Uncle TaeTae! It tastes icky!" She argues turning her head away so she doesn't look at either one of us.
Tae leans over and whispers something into her ear only for her turn to turn back excitedly. "You just have to take your medicine Yoons."
She glares back at him, crossing her arms over her chest as she tightens her lips closed stubbornly. There was only one thing to do.
"Do you want me to call Uncle Yoongi and tell him you don't want to take your medicine?" I ask her with the most serious face in the world.
"Wh-What? Uncle Yoongi?" She says nervously, dropping her arms.
"Yeah, you know what, let me get my phone," I say, getting up from the hardwood floor.
"No! Wait? I-I'll take it..." she slowly says.
I hold back a laugh at her change of demeanor at the mention of Yoongi. Tae sulks because she is taking it so we don't tell Yoongi. Sitting back down I bring the small cup to her lips tilting it up to get all the medicine out. Hayoon makes a face as she swallows the Tylenol quickly grabbing the other cup of water to get rid of the taste.
"That was gross," she coughs out, scrunching her face.
"You did it Yoon! Come on, let's watch a movie," Taehyung exclaims, coddling her and carrying her to the sofa.
What am I gonna do with those two?
