Chapter 4
Hayoon is getting impatient with me. Every two minutes she's asking, is it time to leave? Why am I taking so long? Then outright telling me to hurry up. I ignored her as I prepared a bag with towels, sunscreen, snacks, water, and of course her inhaler.
"Let's go," I brightly tell Hayoon, hauling the backpack over my shoulder.
"Yay!" Hayoon squealed, running to the door and waiting for me impatiently.
She clutched my hand tightly once we stepped outside the hotel, she stuck closer to me aware of the strange environment and remembering the promise she made to Taehyung. On our walk to the beach, Hayoon went on and on about every little thing she saw excitement radiating from her despite being cautious.
When she saw the sand and the ocean, she let out giggles of excitement tugging at my hand, "Daddy look we're here!"
"I see it," I smile seeing my baby so happy, "Hayoon, what did the ocean say to the pirate?" I ask her as we search for a spot to leave our stuff in.
"What?" she asks, looking up at me.
"Nothing, it just waved," I laughed loudly at my own joke.
"That wasn't funny Daddy," she says deadpan. Giving me the same unimpressed look Yoongi has.
"Can't even give a little laugh for Daddy?" I ask, only for her to shake her head no.
"Tough crowd," I say with a fake pout.
Hayoon giggles, and gives me a tight hug around my waist. "It's okay, Daddy! You don't have to make jokes, Uncle TaeTae makes the best ones!" She says, trying to reassure me. How does my own daughter not recognize my comical genius? When did Taehyung become the funny one?
We find some empty beach chairs with a large umbrella to provide some shade from the blazing sun, I put our bags down, and finally sit to rest when I feel Hayoon poking me.
"Can I go into the water?" She asks, grabbing my arm and shaking it.
"Okay, but stay where I can see you. I'll join you in a few minutes," I sigh, I can't keep holding her back or she'll explode from excitement.
Hayoon was running off when I remembered something very important, "Wait! You need sunscreen!"
"No!" she yells.
Bolting out of the chair I ran at full speed to catch her before she made it into the water. She looks over her shoulder to see me charging at her a loud squeal erupts from her mouth and she runs even faster as she laughs. I manage to grab her right when her feet touch the water and pull her into me, as I try to catch my breath.
"Let me go!" she whines as she tries to wiggle out of my grasp.
"Hayoon don't be difficult if you stop fighting it'll be over quickly," I warn her, walking back to our spot.
"Do you want to get all red and burnt? Remember when Uncle TaeTae forgot to put sunscreen that other time? And how he couldn't hold you because his shoulders hurt and then his skin started to come off?"
"I don't want to hurt or lose my skin," she mumbles, going limp in my arms.
Setting her down on the floor I lathered her with a thick coat of sunscreen. She scrunched up her face cutely as I blended in the sunscreen on her cheeks and nose.
"Can I go now?" she hopefully asks.
"Get out there and seas the day!" I tell her, holding my laugh.
I lay back on the beach chair watching Hayoon play in the sand and splash her feet in the water. She was attempting to build a sand castle, but it crumbled making her pout. I chuckled to myself as she crossed her arms and kicked the sand castle out of frustration making it crumble completely.
She finally turns to look at me, cupping her hands around her mouth "DADDY COME SWIM!" She yells.
She called at the right time as the heat was causing sweat to form on my forehead and down my back. I took off my shirt and put it in one of the pockets of the backpack and walked over to her. Picking her up I walk deeper into the water, Hayoon clutches her little arms around my neck tightly lifting her legs up so her feet don't touch the water.
"What's wrong baby? Didn't you want me to come in the water with you?" I ask her, confused.
"YES, BUT NOT IN THE DEEP WATER!," she screams in fear when I walk a little deeper into the water, letting it reach my waist.
"Sunlight, why are you scared to come in the water?"
She mumbles something under her breath and into my neck. I couldn't hear properly, "What baby? Tell me properly."
"What if a shark eats us?" she says, sitting up to look at me with a pout.
"Sharks don't come here baby," I coo, squeezing her tight.
"But I saw it in that movie with Uncle TaeTae," she whines.
"What movie baby?" I ask her with a knowing tone.
"The one about TEETH! The girl is swimming and the shark gets her from underneath she didn't even see it Daddy it ate her!" Hayoon explains the movie to me. I'll kill Taehyung!
"Baby Jaws is not real, it's just a movie," I say trying to reassure her. As she keeps her feet up and wrapped around me tightly. "Hayoon things like that don't happen in real life,"
"Are you sure?" she questions wearily.
"Yes! You've been to the beach many times before and no sharks!"
"O-okay," she stutters, slowly letting her feet hang down into the water.
It took a few minutes for her to relax enough for me to put her down, but soon enough she was splashing in the water with no sharks on her mind. I was laughing at her as she tries to show me how she can swim like a mermaid, her feet were crossed as she flopped under the water.
"Didn't I look just like Princess Ariel, Daddy?" She says excitedly as she comes up for air.
"You sure did baby," I say as I noticed her cheeks tinting pink with the sun.
"Let's go take a break and put on more sunscreen," I suggest taking her hand to walk out of the water.
"Again?! I already have some on," she fights, crossing her arms.
"You need to reapply. Your cheeks are getting really red." I say, softly pinching her cheek.
"I don't want to," she furrowed her eyebrows looking the other way.
In the next moment she forgot all about the sunscreen dilemma as she stepped on something mushy and instantly clung onto my arm, yelling in disgust. Claiming I had to carry her out so she wouldn't touch it again. Once we were out of the water, she insisted her new human legs were still wobbly from changing and she couldn't walk to our chairs.
I followed all of her instructions and carried her to our spot, I re applied her sunscreen and wrapped her fluffy pink towel around her as I pulled out our food to eat. As I was clearing up our mess Hayoon's energy was back at an all time high and she was excitedly bouncing around.
"Can you help me make a sand castle?" She asks.
"Sure, baby," I agreed, happily grabbing her pails and shovels.
When Hayoon asked for my help to build a sand castle I thought she'd listen to my suggestions and we'd work together, instead she became a little dictator! She ordered me around and then blamed me for the poor result.
I stood there helplessly as she scolded me, just nodding and accepting the blame. There was no point in arguing with a stubborn Hayoon she would do the impossible to win. She reminded so much of her mom, she was stubborn as a bull, fiery, and passionate but on the same side she was sweet and caring.
Hayoon was getting grumpy and that could mean one of two things. She was either sleepy or hungry or a combination of both. Judging from the fact we just had a light lunch I'd say she's exhausted.
The sun was going down. We had spent the whole afternoon on the beach playing around. Fatigue was hitting me hard, today's activities catching up to me making my body feel sore. If I feel this way Hayoon surely feels it too, which is good because it meant she would fall asleep in an instant after her bath.
We are walking along the shore and I watched as Hayoon was busy collecting all the pretty seashells she spotted and saving them in the outside pocket of my backpack. The warm ocean water splashed on our sandy feet washing them momentarily.
I picked up a small crab I found on the sand and showed it to Hayoon. She hesitantly touched it, jumping when the tiny crab moved in my hand. She tried holding it, but the crab managed to escape her small hand falling into the sand and burrowing in a tiny hole.
"The crab doesn't like me," she pouts, letting her hands fall to her sides.
"He likes you, but he has to go back home," I smile, tickling her belly.
"To his family?" she asks curiously, staring at the small hole the crab disappeared into.
"Yeah, he's tired, it's his bedtime,'' I say, taking her hand.
Walking back to the hotel Hayoon was sitting on my shoulders, holding onto my head keeping balance. She had seen another dad doing it with his son and she instantly stared up at me with her big puppy dog eyes. How could I say no?
"Get down little monkey or you'll hit your head," Crouching down I help her get off my shoulders. So we can get into our room.
"To the shower and to bed." I say, not giving her a chance to argue as I push her into the bathroom and start the water.
She didn't even complain with a big yawn, she got into the shower and washed quickly. I sat her down on the bathroom counter and dried her hair with the cheap, not so powerful hair dryer the hotel provided. From the mirror, I could see her eyes closed, my baby already asleep despite the noise and the light tugging of her hair.
Picking her up I laid her on the bed and gave her the stuffed tiger she loved so much. I had almost forgotten it, but Hayoon being her dramatic self, let out a huge gasp right before we left the house claiming her "Tiger TaeTae" was missing. After a hectic search Tae found it squished between her bed and wall saving the day.
I chuckled as she instantly clutched it tight as she slept. Making sure I put the safety lock on the balcony door, I went to take a shower, removing all the sand my hair and skin that had accumulated throughout the day.
When I got out of the shower, I spotted Hayoon starfishing on the bed "Tiger TaeTae" thrown on the floor, for such a tiny person she sure took up a lot of space. I picked it up and gently pushed her over so I could lay beside her. Hayoon rolled over and stuck to my side, one arm hitting me in the face as she threw it over to lay it on my chest, her leg was thrown over my waist. Her head resting on my arm, and her cold toes pressed into my side making me flinch.
Forgetting about the world outside of this room, I pulled the blanket up over us, repositioning her into a more comfortable position to spoon. I fell asleep, with my Sunlights soft snores being the only noise in the quiet night.
