the rain drummed softly against the windows, filling the quiet of lando's apartment with a steady rhythm. outside, the streetlights cast a warm glow over the slick pavement, and the faint hum of the city was muted by the storm. inside, nestled into the couch, juliette sat with her legs draped over lando's lap, lazily scrolling through the endless selection of movies on his tv.
his apartment had become familiar to her over the past few months, the oversized couch that practically swallowed them whole, the half-empty water bottles scattered around because lando was terrible at remembering which one was his, the faint scent of his cologne lingering in the air. it was comfortable, easy, and so was being with him.
"you're impossible," she muttered, casting him an exasperated look when he vetoed yet another movie suggestion.
lando grinned, completely unbothered, his dimples flashing. "we have to pick the right one."
"at this rate, we'll be sitting here all night." she huffed, tossing the remote onto his chest. "which, fine, but if we don't decide soon, i'm putting on a documentary about the history of farming."
he groaned dramatically. "you wouldn't."
"try me."
lando studied her, squinting like he was trying to gauge just how serious she was. then, with a mischievous glint in his eye, he suddenly grabbed her waist and pulled her into him, rolling them both onto their sides. she let out a surprised laugh as he tangled them up together, trapping her in his arms.
"this is cheating," she pointed out, trying to wiggle free, but he only tightened his hold.
"nah, this is strategy." his voice was smug, but his grip was gentle, his hands warm against her sides. "if you can't reach the remote, you can't play the farming doc."
"you're ridiculous."
"and yet you're still here."
juliette rolled her eyes, but there was no real bite behind it. lando had a way of doing that, turning even the most mundane moments into something playful, something that made her heart feel light. she liked that about him.
they settled into a comfortable silence, his arms still around her, his fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns along her spine. after a moment, he yawned, stretching slightly before murmuring, "this is nice... 𝘪 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶."
the words slipped out so easily, so effortlessly, that for a moment, juliette didn't even register them. but then the realisation hit, like a slow, rolling wave at first, then all at once, crashing over her with full force.
her breath hitched. her body tensed.
lando stilled.
the weight of his words hung in the air between them, thick and unshakable. and then...
"oh."
his voice was quiet, hesitant, like he was only just processing what he'd said. he blinked, his grip on her loosening slightly as his expression shifted from sleepy contentment to wide-eyed panic.
"oh, shit."
juliette's heart was racing. had he meant to say that? was it just an accident? her mind scrambled to catch up, but lando was already moving, already pulling away slightly, already groaning as he ran a hand through his hair.
"i—i didn't mean to say that." his voice was slightly rushed, his words stumbling over each other. "i mean, i did, but not like that. not right now."
juliette just stared at him, her pulse thrumming loudly in her ears.
lando groaned again, his hand dragging down his face. "oh my god, this is a disaster."
the sheer panic on his face, so unlike the usual confident, teasing lando, was what finally snapped her out of her daze. because he was freaking out. genuinely, truly freaking out.
and, to her absolute surprise, she laughed.
lando froze. "are you laughing at me right now?"
she pressed a hand over her mouth, trying to stifle the giggles bubbling up from her chest. but the combination of his horrified expression, his rambling, the way he was looking at her like he'd just set his entire apartment on fire, it was all too much.
"this is not funny," he muttered, crossing his arms.
"it's kind of funny," she admitted, eyes shining with amusement.
he groaned, flopping back onto the couch. "say something reassuring before i actually die."
juliette took a deep breath, her laughter settling into something softer, something warmer. she reached for his hand again, threading their fingers together. "lando."
he swallowed hard, watching her carefully.
she squeezed his hand, her voice quieter now. "i love you too."
his eyes widened, lips parting slightly, like he was making sure he'd actually heard her right. "yeah?"
she nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. "yeah."
for a second, he just stared at her, like he couldn't quite believe it. then, slowly, a grin spread across his face, one of those real, dimpled, lando grins that made her stomach flip.
"okay," he murmured, exhaling like a weight had just been lifted from his chest. "okay."
and then he was pulling her into him, pressing his lips to hers, smiling against her mouth like he couldn't help it. she laughed softly, wrapping her arms around his neck as he whispered, "gonna pretend i played that cool."
juliette pulled back just enough to raise an eyebrow. "you absolutely did not."
"shh," he hushed her, grinning. "just let me have this."
she rolled her eyes but let him kiss her again anyway.
