The Mighty Fall

(Pete)

"Peter, stay after class please." The classroom erupted in a series of juvenile 'oohhhsss'.

I smiled at Patrick's words. I glanced over at Nic. He smiled too. Brendon glared at me. Probably assuming I was getting in trouble for something. I just smiled wider.

"May I ask why, sir?" I said back.

"It's regarding your assignment."

"What about-"

"We'll discuss it after class!" He snapped.

I glanced at the clock above the board. There were only a few minutes left until class ended. The thought excited me a little. What was he going to say? He couldn't just come right out and tell me he didn't like that I had a boyfriend. Could he? Or what if he kissed me again? I squirmed in my seat at the thought.

But as the clock ticked away, another thought hit me. Last time we had a free written assignment, he sought me out just to discuss what I wrote. What if he really only wanted to see me after class because of my paper? What if he didn't even care that I was dating Nic? My excitement began to melt away.

The bell rang everyone rushed to stuff their things in their bags. I stood up slowly. Brendon came to stand in front of my desk.

"What did you do?" He asked.

"Nothing. You heard him say it was about my paper."

"You know what mom said. If you get in trouble again-" He stopped talking and pulled out his phone. It must have vibrated. The screen was cracked so I couldn't see what he was looking at. He glanced back up at me. "We'll talk about this later."

"No we won't." I called after him as he rushed for the door.

Nic stood in front of me next. "I'll see you in the next class!" He made a show of hugging me. "I want every detail." He whispered when his mouth was next to my ear.

"You got it." I whispered back.

He let go. "I love you!" He said in a louder voice than necessary.

I mouthed the word overkill and he laughed. Nic was the last one out of the room. He waved to Patrick before closing the door behind him. I sat on top of my desk. Watching Patrick was he circled around his desk to lean against the front of it.

"Love, huh?"

So this was going to be personal. I smiled. "I guess so."

"You guess so?" I nodded. "It's pretty early. Didn't you two just start dating?"

"What can I say?" I shrugged. "It was love at first sight."

"Cut the crap, Pete."

"What ever are you talking about?" I said in my best southern belle accent.

Instead of answering, he reached behind him to grab a sheet of paper from his desk. Holding it in front of his face.

"Today I'm feeling more loved than ever.
It's like the lord above has personally answered my prayers and rewarded me with Pete.
I can't believe he finally asked me out.
Pete is the greatest guy I know.
He deserves to be cherished and loved.
Anyone who disagrees is an idiot."

"That's such a nice thing for you to say, Mr. Stump." I teased.

He rolled his eyes. "This is Nicholas's assignment."

"That's so nice of-"

"Overkill much?" He placed the paper back on his desk. "You two aren't dating."

"Yes we are."

"No you aren't." He walked over to stand in front of me. "Clingy and overly romantic isn't your type."

"You don't know what my type is."

"I know Nicholas isn't it."

"For your information, I do actually like him." I lifted my chin.

"That may be true. But you're not that into him. I can tell."

"Oh yeah? Then who am I into?"

He placed his hands on my knees. My heart rate sped up. "Me."

I tried to laugh it off. But it came out nervously. "Yeah, right!"

"You didn't feel anything in that kiss?" He asked. Squeezing my knees lightly.

"I, uh-" Why the fuck was I so flustered? I was never flustered. The late bell rang through the classroom.

"I did. I couldn't stop thinking about it." His eyebrows pushed in.

"I thought about it too." I admitted.

"I know you did." He leaned in closer. Anticipation burned inside of my stomach. "Are you really with, Nicholas?" He whispered.

"N-No." I breathed the words.

He leaned in even closer. I could practically feel his skin on mine. Making my head light. My eyes fluttered shut.

"I knew it." He tapped his fingers on my knees. I felt him back away from me. My eyes snapped open.

"What?!"

"I knew you were lying." He walked back over to his desk and lifted his pen. Scribbling something on a piece of paper. "You're late to class." He lifted the paper up. "Here's a note."

"What?" I said again. Not moving from my spot on my desk. He walked back around and placed the sheet in my hand.

"You'd better get going. I don't want you to miss out."
