I've Got A Dark Alley And A Bad Idea

(Pete)

"And he just kissed you?"

I'd repeated the story over three times to Nic. And each time he had a different question. Which just ended in me telling the story yet again. And I was sure it was about to become a never ending cycle.

"Yes. He just kissed me."

"But why? How?"

"Nic, I've explained it like a hundred times."

"I still don't understand."

"After you ran out on me." Nic gave me an apologetic smile. "He and I had a small dispute-"

"About him watching the movie with his boyfriend instead of you?"

"Yeah. And I stormed off to go call a cab. But I didn't know he was following me. So I sort of ran away from him. And we argued some more and then he kissed me."

"And the lady came and asked if you were okay?"

"Yes! That's it."

"What happened after?"

I parked the car in the spot Brendon usually parked it. I switched it off and turned to look at Nic.

"He apologized and drove me home."

"That's it?"

"Did you expect sex in the back seat?"

"I would expect nothing less from you." Nic grinned.

"Well it's not going to happen. He has a boyfriend that he loves and all that crap."

"But he still kissed you."

I shrugged. We got out of the car. Nic turned towards the school. I turned to go across the street where I knew my friends would be waiting for me. Maybe they'd like Nic too. Yeah they'd totally like Nic.

"Come with me." I offered

"To that old cafe?" He frowned as he looked at it.

"My friends hang out in the back before school."

"And do what?"

"Smoke. Sometimes drink. Just chill."

"I don't smoke on school days and you shouldn't either. Didn't Patrick tell you not to?"

"Yeah, but-" He cut me off.

"But nothing. If you're going to get him to breakup with his boyfriend and fall for you, you have to follow his rules."

"Who says I want that?" Nic just raised an eyebrow. I sighed. "Fine. I want that."

He smiled. "Good. Because I have a plan!"

"Why don't I feel excited?"

"It may involve you kissing me again." Nic phrased it as if it were some kind of prize.

I didn't know what to say. I hadn't expected Nic to bring up our very awkward kiss. Well, awkward because he ran off after it. The kiss itself was okay. I wouldn't mind doing it again actually...

"Fine. Whats the plan?"

(Brendon)

Ryan blasted loud music in the car just like Pete. But I didn't mind because Ryan sung along to the music. And he had a pretty amazing voice. Not as trained as mine. But with a little practice, he could be almost as good.

"I know that I messed up a few times or watcha wanna call it. I know if I fell down, you'd change the way that I saw it. I put it on the line for this time only. Is that what you really want?" Ryan glanced at me as he sung.

This song was what my parents would refer to as the 'devil's music'. Any song that wasn't about God or church was considered the devil's music. Except for a few country songs my mother listened to as she cooked and cleaned.

"Could you turn that down?" I asked.

Ryan reached over and turned it down so low that I could barely hear anything. Good.

"What? Is my singing that bad?" He joked.

"Horrible!" I joked back. Smiling in relief when he laughed.

"Let's see you do any better, B."

I smiled wider. He had no idea what he was in for. I thought of a song that Ryan might recognize but came up empty. Oh well. I'd have to sing one of my mother's favorites. I cleared my throat.

" Jesus take the wheel. Take it from my hands. Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go. So give me one more chance. Save me from this road I'm on.
Jesus take the wheel!"

My voice rang through the car. I had a lot of confidence in my voice and for a good reason. It was perfect. I was never pitchy. I was never off tune.

Ryan stared at me for a few seconds without speaking. I couldn't tell if he was impressed with my voice or not. So I just stared back. Ryan's lip twitched up into a smile. And then he was laughing. He was laughing so hard that tears were coming from his eyes.

He put the car in park and let go of the wheel. I could tell he was trying to say something but he couldn't get it out through the laughs. My eyes narrowed at him. I was seriously starting to get offended. It took a few minutes for his laughter to die down.

"Holy shit, man." He wiped the moisture from his eyes. "Don't you know any normal songs?"

"What do you mean?"

"Like a song that isn't church related."

"Not really." I answered honestly.

"Oh my innocent little, Brenny." He ruffled my hair. "I'm going to have so much fun with you."
