Coffee's For Closers

(Brendon)

"I can put my whole fist in my mouth. Wanna see?" Ryan asked me.

"Um, of course!" I laughed.

He balled his hand into a tight fist. He had a large hand. Maybe it was because he was so tall. He started by putting the knuckle of his pinky at the corner of his mouth. And then he pushed his mouth wider with it. Slowly, bit by bit, his entire hand was in his mouth. I clapped dramatically. He snatched his hand from his mouth. Trinkets of his spit touched my hand and I shrieked.

"You try."

"No." I laughed. "That's where the line is drawn. I'm not splitting my mouth open for you."

"Fine. But it's really easy."

"Because you have a huge mouth."

Ryan laughed. I liked hanging out with Ryan. I could make jokes about him and say all the weird stuff that came to my mind. He never got offended. If I slipped and said something like that to my other friends, I'd be stuck apologizing for weeks. But not with Ryan. One, because nothing bothered that dude. Literally nothing. And two, because he always had a quick and equally offensive comeback.

"No. You have a huge mouth." He laughed. I laughed too. "I'm surprised you can't fit a person in there."

"Or can I?"

"What?" He gave me a weird look.

I opened my mouth as wide as I could. Which was pretty wide. And I began biting at Ryan. He shrieked and tried pushing me away. Laughing even harder than before. I liked his laugh. And I wanted to keep hearing it so I continued chomping away towards him.

"Hungry hungry hippo!" I chanted as I bit at his cheek. Ryan quickly reached his arm up to block my teeth. I wasn't expecting the defense and my teeth bit down on his arm. Hard. I drew back immediately.

"Ow." He twisted his arm to get a better look at it.

"Ryan, I'm so sorry. It was an accident. I didn't know you were going to lift your arm. I shouldn't have been playing that roughly anyway. I mean, you're in a hospital for god's sake. That was. So stupid. Do you want me to leave? I'll leave-"

"Brendon, please just shut up!"

"Okay." I pressed my lips together tightly. Looking at my hands.

"Its payback time."

"What?" My eyes snapped up to his smiling face. He opened his mouth to show off his perfect teeth. "Ryan, no."

"Yes!" He began snapping his jaw towards me. I nearly screamed. But then the laughter came. His and mine. How can something so childish be so fun? He wasn't snapping as hard as I was. Probably to avoid making my same mistake, despite the fact he claimed it was payback. "Now I'm the hungry hippo!"

"Well, Mr. Hippo, you won't be hungry for long." The same nurse from before walked in. She smiled over at us. "It's dinner time." She sat the tray down and left the room again."

Ryan didn't waste any time pulling the food toward us. This time it was what I think was macaroni, a pork chop, corn and a roll. Ryan dug his finger in the Mac and cheese and then in the corn. He held his finger up to my lips and I opened my mouth.

"Yum."

"This shirt is bitching." Nic snatched up an Iron Maiden T-shirt and held it to his torso.

"Yeah, it's awesome, but my mom would kill me if I tried to buy that."

"I'll put it in my cart and buy it for you."

"Really?"

"Yeah, why not?"

He put the shirt in his cart and we continued walking down the aisle. My mother was on the other side of the store. Probably looking at button ups and khaki's. She had a cart full of ugly clothes for Brendon and I. I knew that my opinion wasn't taken when she was buying my clothes. So instead of following her around and groaning every time she picked something, I was helping Nic shop. He and I had really similar taste.

"That's cool!" I pointed towards a a black jumper. "It looks like what some weird hippi farmer would wear."

"I like it too." Nic grabbed two and put it in his quickly filling cart.

"Dude, that's a lot of shit. Why do you need two?"

"One is for you." He looked at me as if that should have been obvious.

"You don't have to buy me it just because I said I liked it."

"Its cool."

"Are you paying for this with your own money?"

"My mom's credit card. She feels bad for forcing me to move around so much because of her job. So she let's me spend what I want."

"That's fucking awesome." I smiled. "I wish my mom was like that."

"I'm a lucky, lucky boy."

He walked down the sneaker aisle and looked for something he liked. A pair of bright yellow high tops caught my attention. They were the brightest yellow I'd ever seen. And to top it off, they had bright pink shoe laces. I lifted the tag. Only eighty bucks. I'd have to come back and get them when my mom isn't with me. I flipped the tag. Glow in the dark shoe strings. I almost laughed out loud. She'd hate them.

Nic walked up behind me and saw me looking at the shoes. He shrugged and put them in his cart.

"You don't have to buy me everything I take a second look at." I told him.

"It's cool."

"Its weird." I corrected. "It's like you're trying to buy my friendship."

"I-I'm not." He said quickly.

"Boys!" My mother rushed over to us. I'd never seen her so excited. She maneuvered the cart skillfully towards the aisle we were in. Smiling a little too happily. "Look what I've found!"

She held up a white T-shirt. It had I'm with Jesus written on it in a very bold yellow color. With a finger pointing upward. I guess it was supposed to be some holy rendition of the I'm with stupid shirts. The first thing I thought was that it would match my shoes perfectly. She stood there staring at us.

"I love it ma'am." Nic smiled back.

"Good. Because I got one for each of you!"
