Chapter 4

I stared at Draco, although my vision of him was dark and I couldn't see his features properly. I was pretty sure he was crying, too, but I would never know that for definite.

"You didn't have to pay me back," I told him quietly. His hand still held mine, but I didn't want to acknowledge it. I didn't want to accept what he was saying.

I knew I'd get hurt again.

"I thought that it might prove I still think about you," Draco muttered.

I sighed, "Draco, I'm not sure if we can fix this. You know my most sensitive aspect is my blo-"

"What on earth are you two doing in here?"

I turned to see Slughorn. Through talking, I hadn't noticed the door unlock.

My eyes began to well up with tears as I ran out of the cupboard and to my dorm.

Draco's POV

My eyes trailed after Evelyn, even when she'd gone. I stared at the door aimlessly and wanted to destroy myself when I'd heard her sob.

"What did you do, boy?"

I looked at Slughorn with a glare, "Nothing. She's the one who's breaking my heart."

Slughorn didn't comment on that, "Why were you locked in the cupboard?"

"We were getting ingredients last period and you locked the door on us," I explained.

"Oh," said Slughorn, and then he walked off.

I followed him out of the storage cupboard and closed the door behind me. I mentally groaned at myself.

Was it too soon? I thought, Why was she crying?

I wanted to know desperately, and I knew how to find out. Even if it did mean I had to encounter a certain Greengrass and get her to trust me.

Later

"So, you're expecting me, Evelyn's best friend, to tell you what she's thinking behind her back?" Daphne repeated.

"When you put it like that, you make me sound bad!" I told her, "But essentially, yes. You know she was content with me. So please, Daphne? For her sake, too?"

Daphne facepalmed, and nodded, "Okay. I'll do it. But she's never to know this happened."

I held out my hand, and said, "Deal."

Daphne looked disappointed in herself but told me anyway, "She's hurt, Draco. As far as I can see, she still has feelings for you. But I'm not sure if you can get her back this easily."

"I know that it's not going to be easy," I agreed, "But as long as I know that a part of her still needs me."

"You'd be right in assuming that," she said quietly.

"W-why was she crying earlier?" I asked.

"She said about how you'd apologised... She wants you back, but she doesn't know how to say it. She doesn't know what to do, Draco. So you need to take this into your own hands."

"What can I do?" I questioned.

"I don't know. Do something romantic. Buy her flowers, jewellery, whatever she likes. Set up a picnic," Daphne said, "I've got to go now, she'll be wondering why it took me so long to 'deliver a letter'."

"You couldn't find your owl," I stated. I didn't like lying to Evelyn, I never had. But it was always for the best.

I planned to go to Hogsmeade the next day. I was going to get Evelyn back, no matter how dangerous it was. The reason why?

I would always be there to protect her from there on.
