Chapter 12

I would've asked Dumbledore.

He was the man who changed my fate completely, the man who had allowed me to meet Draco.

And he was dead.

I knew why. Draco wasn't shaking anymore and he wasn't acting weird. I knew it was something to do with Death Eaters because I'd been dragged out of my dorm by Bellatrix Lestrange, who cackled as she smashed the windows of Hogwarts with merely her hands, and kept telling Draco he was an idiot.

Draco kept giving me apologetic glances, and despite the fact that I didn't inch towards him, I wasn't doing it out of anger. After knowing what happened to Dumbledore, I wasn't going to put Draco and I in any more danger then I had to.

"Good work," Bellatrix said to me, "You helped Draco fix the cabinet."

If I was actually a Death Eater, I'd have probably liked her.

"Thanks," I replied.

But inside my head I was worrying. Who would I ask about the hissing now? Professor Snape?

I found myself stopping as I heard the snake's voice ringing in my ears again, and Bellatrix had engaged herself into a conversation with Draco and the others. No one noticed me.

It was saying, "Come. Come or he dies."

I knew what it meant. It meant Draco and if I had to get myself killed to protect him, I would.

"Good," it began to hiss.

I followed it. With every step I took, it got louder and closer. I found myself in the girls' bathroom on the third floor.

I didn't see anything unusual, but the snake had confirmed that I was where I was supposed to be.

That was when I heard it more vividly than ever. As I turned, it came into view. It was huge, but nothing like I'd heard that basilisk back in second year to be. It took up half of the bathroom, and looked at me with beady, yellow eyes.

It looked almost sad. So, I felt myself beginning to speak to it.

"It's okay," I whispered. I didn't recognise my own voice, and it wasn't English.

How did I know what this voice that I was sure was mine was saying?

"You don't have to do it," I told the snake, "It doesn't matter who set you after me. I can tell you don't want to hurt anybody."

"Thank you," the snake hissed and disappeared.

My eyes widened, but the moment was gone as I felt someone digging their nails into my back.

"You bitch!" Ebony yelled, "What are you? A Parselmouth?"

Ebony cut me off before I could even begin to speak, "You can't be! You're a filthy squib! Your blood is what taints this school! Let me guess, you killed Dumbledore too?!"

Ebony began to scream at me, but I wasn't paying attention to her words. I was crying, hard. I didn't care that one of my worst enemies was in front of me. I would not be blamed for Dumbledore's death!

"You're the bitch!" I shouted at her, "You tried to kill me with that bloody snake! And I did NOT kill Dumbledore!"

I slapped her, hard. The impact made her avert her eyes from me, and she pushed me to the floor instantly and began to pry my mouth open.

"Evelyn!"

Draco.

"Eat this, you dirty squib," Ebony whispered, feeding some sort of purple-coloured weed into my mouth. I couldn't move, I couldn't breathe and I certainly couldn't escape.

"I wasn't going to use it," she smirked, stooping on my left wrist, breaking it instantly, "But you tempted me."

With that, she stepped over my body and ran out, but not without passing Draco first. She stormed off in panic.

"Evelyn, don't leave me!"

Draco was screaming and crying, pressing on his Dark Mark hard. Snape appeared instantly and leant over my body, but I couldn't see them. I was seeing something else.

My worst nightmare - Ebony kissing Draco right in front of me.

The most terrifying part?

I couldn't tell if it was real or not as the sound of Professor Snape's voice along with Draco's cries faded from my ears.
