TWO.
TWO
Connor looked at the other man in the ring. He did little fights like these to earn a bit of money. People put money on him winning these fights and that meant he got more winnings. His friend Kian wrapped the bandages round his fists as she hopped from foot to foot.
"You got this," Kian says, smacking Connor's arm playfully and Connor nods.
The other guy was bigger than Connor muscle wise, but Connor was faster, more agile. The referee allowed the fight to begin and the opponent swing immediately, Connor ducked and swung a swift punch into the other mans stomach. A grunt escapes the mans lips as he swings for Connor again. Connor leans back just enough to miss him and he hops from foot to foot, waiting for the opponent to move.
Simon nodded to the man at the door, he had no idea why his new friend, Connor Hartland, had asked him to turn up to this address at this time but never the less it had happened. Simon moves through the dimly lit, concrete building. He moves through the crowd and looks up at the ring, people fighting- it looked like bare knuckle fighting.
It took Simon a whole minute to finally realise why Connor had invited him- Connor was the one fighting.
Simon noticed Jack, Kian and Daniel- all of then members of Connor's friendship group, all of them but Daniel members of the football team. Kian spotted Simon and waved him over, Simon did as the boy gestured and walked right over to them.
"I see you got sent the location for todays fight," Kian says and Simon nods.
"Looks like Connor's got himself a new mate," Jack laughs and Simon smiles faintly.
"Oh shit!" Kian yells as the opponent gets a clean hit on Connor's stomach. Connor falls to his knees, coughing up a spot of blood.
"C'mon Con," Jack says through gritted teeth.
"Get up!" Daniel calls and Simon steps forwards.
"Connor, you've got this!" Simon shouts and Connor gulps back his pain and stands up, he shakes off his arms and legs and bites down on his gum shield.
"Fuck you," Connor mutters when he gets close to the opponent.
"Whats he say?" Kian mutters.
"Looked like fuck you to me," Jack replies and Kian rolls his eyes.
"I swear to fuck, if he causes more trouble for himself outside the ring again," Kian mutters and Simon pushes his hands into his coat pockets, he wondered what exactly they meant, but he didn't want to ask, after all, they were Connor's friends, not Simon's.
Connor eventually won, knocking the guy to the floor and he just lay there, he was awake but obviously he was tired and didn't want to fight anymore. Simon and practically everyone else cheered for Connor when he won his money. Afterwards, Connor left the ring and his friends swarmed him, leaving Simon on the sidelines.
Simon walked towards his dorm block, after all he had loads of stuff to get done before his next Criminology lecture. He reaches for the door but as he does so he hears his name being called. He glances round and sees Connor jogging towards him.
"Oi, you little asshole! I invite you to my fight and you leave without congratulating me?" He pants when he finally arrives at Simon.
"Yeah...Sorry, I just, I felt a bit uncomfortable, you know? I mean, you had all your friends with you and I don't really know them that well," Simon explains and Connor nods, sighing as he pulls his box of cigarettes from his jacket pocket.
"Right, and why aren't they your friends? Because they're my friends, so that surely makes them your friends?" Connor replies and Simon shakes his head.
"Not really, thats not how friendship works," Simon tells him and Connor rolls his eyes, lighting up a cigarette.
"You're a nice guy, hell, you didn't even argue when I dragged you to come and watch a film with me the other night, that just shows you get along with anyone," Connor says and Simon scoffs.
"I'm not like that," Simon says and Connor laughs.
"No need to be ashamed of being sweet," Connor says and Simon frowns.
"You do realise I used to be the most feared kid in my school, right?" Simon says and Connor's lips curve into a smile before he bursts into laughter.
"Thats a great joke, is that what the crack is like where you're from? The most feared kid in my school, fucking 'ell, thats a classic," Connor laughs, wiping imaginary tears from his eyes as the odd chuckle escapes his lips.
"I'm not joking, ask anyone here who went to my sixth form or school and ask them about Simon Minter," Simon says, he was getting frustrated, why couldn't Connor just believe him?
"Right, so, what posh cunts go here that went to your school?" Connor asks as he takes a drag of his cigarette, blowing the smoke into the air without a care in the world.
"Tobi Brown and Vikram Barn go here, ask them,"
"Vikram Barn? I know him, he's doing applied science right? My mate's in his class, I'll get him to ask," Connor says, looking at the slightly shorter, silver haired boy.
"So, you fucked any girls since I last spoke to you?" Connor asks, breathing out more smoke, "Or have you been doing a little college experimentation?"
Simon's eyebrows furrow when he notices Connor wiggling his eyebrows, "Oh c'mon, you must have been movies where girls go to college and get all lesbian together?"
"Do I look like a lesbian to you?" Simon asks and Connor smirks, shrugging.
"Maybe...If you had red hair," Connor laughs and Simon's jaw clenches, did Connor know Simon had red hair once?
"Funny," Simon mutters.
"Nah, but seriously, you been with any of the lads on your floor? I heard theres some right lookers?" Connor asks, a smirk still gracing on his lips.
"I'm not gay, alright?"
"Never said you were, you might be bisexual or...whatever the other ones are," Connor say, shrugging lightly as he stamps out his cigarette.
"I'm straight," Simon says and Connor lifts an eyebrow.
"I'm not sure that you're sure about that," Connor says and Simon's eyes roll, "I saw you, checking all the lads out in the changing rooms... Or was that you measuring everyone up because you're some kinda' tough guy looking for a fight?"
"Why does it fucking matter?" Simon asks, his teeth gritted.
"Ah, thats where you're wrong, it doesn't matter," Connor says and Simon reaches forwards and grabs the other boys collar, he turns him round and slams his back into the wall.
"Fuck you," Simon says, his eyes seemed to be staring into Connor's.
"I know what everyone meant now, when they said there was 'lookers' on your floor...They were talking about you," Connor says, eyes still fixed on Simon's.
Simon's jaw locks as he drops his hands, letting Connor fall down the wall.
"See you around, Minter," Connor calls as Simon opens the door to the dormitories.
"I hope not, Hartland,"
