CHAPTER 12: THE GOOD DIE YOUNG

❝ i can't wait until you die. ❞

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

THEY SAY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG. Perhaps that is why Davina Claire was dead and Katherine Pierce was dying. Perhaps that is why Jeremy Gilbert was alive and Enola Sommers was living. Either way, time was not meant to be wasted.

Enola climbed behind the wheel of the nearest vehicle before setting off. She had been looking for an excuse to leave New Orleans even if only for a short time and her brother rising from the dead couldn't have been more perfect. She was honestly just surprised that Klaus and Rebekah volunteered to join her on her little excursion. She was certain that this had everything to do with the fact that Katherine was currently dying. They say the good die young. And Katherine has lived a long life.

Enola stared out the window as they passed the WELCOME TO MYSTIC FALLS sign. She kind of missed the dreary town. She was now returning six months pregnant. Her baby bump was definitely more prominent now. She would be lying if she were to say that she wasn't a little nervous. She was sure news of her pregnancy had spread all throughout Mystic Falls. She hadn't spoken to anyone since she left besides Elena which was why she was here in the first place. Her sister had called with the good news of their brother's resurrection. Jeremy had wanted to talk to her himself but Elena thought it would be more special if the first words they spoke were in person.

"We have arrived," Klaus hummed.

"Finally," Rebekah groaned.

Enola looked up at the Salvatore Boarding House with wide unsure eyes as Klaus climbed out of the driver's seat. He used his vampire speed to rush to the other side of the car before opening her door for her. She thanked him as he extended a hand to help her pregnant self out of the vehicle. The second she was standing on her own two feet the front door to the Salvatore Boarding House swung open and she was swept away in a bone crushing hug. It didn't take her long to figure out who it was.

"You're a lot more lively than I remember," Enola teased.

"And you're a lot more pregnant than I remember," Jeremy shot back.

"Which is exactly why you should loosen your hold," Klaus warned.

"What are you two even doing here?" Jeremy frowned in confusion.

"We heard Katherine is on her deathbed," Rebekah chirped. "We are here to celebrate."

"Perfect," Elena chirped, stepping out of the house with a wide smile. "Because we have an unopened bottle of scotch waiting for you guys inside."

"Elena!" Enola grinned, rushing into her sister's arms. "I've missed you."

"I've missed you more," Elena smiled softly, immediately reciprocating the hug.

"Not possible," Enola muttered, tightening her arms around her sister.

"Yes possible," Elena promised as they reluctantly pulled apart. "Now come inside. Everyone is dying to see you."

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

The reunion was even more grand than Enola had expected. Everyone was actually civil towards one another. This was a celebration after all. Katherine Pierce was dying and none of them were exactly sad about it. She ruined all of them. She even killed some of them at one point. Why would they be sad to see her go?

"Rule number one, think of the worst thing Katerina Petrova has ever done to you. Rule number two, toast to the glory of her impending doom." Klaus said, explaining the drinking game he had just made up. "Rule number three, if you come across something that is worse—which you probably will—repeat rules one and two."

"She pretended to be buried in a tomb for one hundred and forty five years while I waited for her lying ass." Damon hummed before facing Enola. "Wait. Does that beat pretending to be you and kissing me on the front porch of your old house?"

"I don't think so," Enola chirped.

"I don't think so either," Damon agreed, tossing back another shot.

"Though that is information I could have lived without," Klaus scowled.

"I quite enjoyed hearing about that one," Rebekah smirked.

"Little Gilbert," Damon hummed, passing Jeremy a shot.

"She fed me to Silas and I died," Jeremy announced, accepting the shot with ease.

"Doozy," Damon cringed at the aftermath of that entire situation.

"Then she made me crash my car into a pole and left me for dead. Again." Jeremy threw back another shot.

"Double doozy. Drink." Damon pushed on.

"I am going to be drinking for Enola," Elena announced.

"I thank you for your services," Enola grinned.

"She impersonated us. Repeatedly." Elena said, throwing back two shots. "Made Aunt Jenna stab herself in the stomach and cut off Uncle John's fingers."

"He might have deserved that," Jeremy voiced his opinion.

"Oh, definitely." Enola agreed.

"My grams died trying to close a tomb she wasn't in," Bonnie sighed, taking a shot.

"Klaus followed her to Mystic Falls, and because of that, we lost Jenna." Enola announced.

"Sorry about that, love." Klaus apologized, setting a comforting hand on her lower back

"But I also met the love of my life, so maybe I should be thanking her." Enola finished, sending Klaus a cheeky smile.

"I think I just threw up in my mouth," Rebekah teased.

"She tried to kill me at least twice," Elena continued.

"She did kill me," Caroline reminded. "Though I am weirdly better off."

"Rumor has it she burnt down the entire city of Atlanta once," Rebekah informed.

"That might win," Jeremy chuckled.

"Alright. Knock it off or take it somewhere else." Stefan huffed, storming into the room with a slight frown. "You guys are being insensitive."

"Come on, Stefan." Klaus teased. "Katerina has never been a saint."

"Yeah," Damon agreed. "Don't let the sight of a frail, human Katherine cloud your memories of the manipulative psycho that she is."

"In 1864, Katherine moved into my home, she compelled me to love her, seduced my brother, fed us full of vampire blood, and then started a war with the town that got us killed." Stefan announced, taking a shot glass off the table.

"Exactly. Bottoms up." Damon chirped, downing a shot for himself.

"But centuries before that, she was just an innocent girl who was shunned by her family, so for five hundred years, she lied and manipulated and did whatever she had to do to survive, and she did. She's a survivor, right?" Stefan continued. "So that's the girl that I will drink to today. Cheers."

"Happy to know you haven't changed," Enola smiled. "Still willing to see good in everyone who has been nothing but bad."

"Please," Damon rolled his eyes. "One night of hot sex with her and he is brainwashed."

"What?" Elena blinked.

"Whoa?" Bonnie gasped.

"Disgusting," Rebekah cringed.

"Oh my—I forgot to tell you guys!" Caroline realized.

"This took an unexpected turn," Klaus chuckled, taking a shot. "Cheers, mate."

They were interrupted by the sound of slow clapping. They turned towards the entrance to the room to find an unfamiliar face. Though judging by the looks shared between the current residents of Mystic Falls it was safe that they recognized her.

"Nadia, the devil's spawn." Damon scowled.

"You're Katherine's kid?" Enola blinked, eyeing the newcomer in curiosity.

"One of them," The devil's spawn—Nadia—answered.

"Well, where's the other one?" Enola frowned.

"Dead," Nadia deadpanned.

"I think my mind just exploded," Enola muttered.

"Katherine is upstairs," Elena informed, tossing back another shot.

"Actually, I'm here to see all of you." Nadia announced. "I found a way to save my mother."

"I don't see what that has to do with us," Rebekah scoffed.

"I need some help," Nadia continued.

"I'd rather be skinned alive," Klaus decided.

"What he said," Damon agreed. "We're not helping. Even my biased brother knows I will kick his ass from here to Kentucky if he helps Katherine Pierce live one more day on this earth." He looked around the room to make sure everyone got the message. "No volunteers."

"I figured as much, which is why I found that old safe your brother spent his summer drowning in and buried it on this property with your friend Matt inside of it." Nadia informed before pulling a familiar ring out of her pocket. "Oh. And without this."

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

Enola never thought she would see the day when Klaus volunteered his services to someone in need. Let alone Matt Donovan. But alas, here she was. Seeing the day from the window of the Salvatore Boarding House. Considering she was six months pregnant, she was forced to stay behind and look after Katherine with Damon while half of their friends left to find the lost quarterback and the other half went along with Nadia.

Enola closed the curtains. She sighed as she made her way up the long flight of stairs. She had been back in Mystic Falls for five minutes and someone was already getting kidnapped. She wasn't all that surprised it was Matt. She was surprised that he was still alive though. The true immortal was him. She chuckled at that thought as she stepped into the spare bedroom Katherine was resting in. She sighed at the sight before her as she leaned against the doorframe with a raised brow.

"Put the pillow down, Damon." Enola deadpanned.

Damon froze over Katherine with a pillow clutched tightly in hand. It didn't take a genius to figure out what he was planning to do with that. Enola was surprised it took him this long to act on his deepest impulse. Katherine has been rotting up here all day. Perhaps he couldn't get to her then. But now that everyone else was out and about trying to rescue Matt, he figured he could get away with smothering her. And he probably would have if it weren't for his shadow.

"Come on, Nola." Damon whined, lowering the pillow. "She deserves it."

"If you kill her, it is murder." Enola pointed out. "Katherine is human now. Think of all the consequences that will come out of your actions."

"Every awful thing I've ever done is linked to her," Damon muttered. "She taught me how to kill, how to enjoy it. She ruined me and I can't take any of that back."

"Look at how much control she still has over you," Enola sighed, gently tugging the pillow away from Damon and setting it back on the bed. "Prove her wrong."

Enola looked down at Katherine in pity. Her hair was beginning to gray and her skin was starting to tighten. Her skin was sickly pale and her eyes were tightly shut. Suddenly her sharp obsidian eyes shot open as a startled gasp left her lips. It took her a second for her eyes to adjust before they focused on a familiar face.

"Enola?" Katherine whispered, blinking long and hard as if the sight wasn't real.

"I'm here," Enola reassured, taking a seat at the edge of the bed.

"Come to watch me wither away?" Katherine wondered dryly.

"You mistake me for Klaus," Enola shrugged.

"I heard about that," Katherine nodded weakly.

"Heard about what exactly?" Enola quirked a brow.

"That you got knocked up with his miracle baby," Katherine hummed, eyes flickering to the noticeable baby bump. "Looks like the rumors are true."

"Unfortunately," Damon muttered.

"Someone's bitter," Katherine chuckled. "Jealous Klaus could give her what you couldn't?"

"I can't wait until you die," Damon smiled. "Maybe then I will finally find peace of mind."

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

Enola stepped back into the room to find Katherine and Damon hadn't killed each other. Yet. She wondered how they were ever in love considering they could hardly stand one another now. Then she remembered that none of it was real. It was mere infatuation. She was just surprised it took them a hundred years to realize that.

"Here are the sedatives from the hospital that Sheriff Forbes just dropped off," Enola hummed. "Should help with the pain."

"I don't want them. They make me weak." Katherine muttered, eyes flickering towards Damon who stood by the window. "And when I'm weak, he can get into my head."

"Okay. Suit yourself. They're right here if you want them." Enola sighed, setting them on the bedside table before turning towards Damon. "Still looking for Matt. Any word from Elena?"

"We're not on a speaking basis," Damon frowned.

"Didn't you hear, Enola?" Katherine smirked. "He was so afraid to dirty her white dove feathers that he let her little wings fly free and it was all my fault. Oops."

Damon scowled at Katherine. He wanted nothing more than to watch her suffer. He used his enhanced speed to zip across the room, grab a sedative, and jab it directly into her neck. Now she would have no choice but to fall asleep and allow him to enter her mind whenever he pleased.

"That will shut her up for a while," Damon hummed.

"I thought things with Elena were going good," Enola frowned.

"I don't want to talk about this," Damon decided.

"Why not?" Enola wondered. "Because you used to be in love with her twin sister."

"Because I'm still in love with her twin sister!" Damon corrected.

That statement was followed by a long stretch of silence. Neither of them knew quite what to say after a proclamation like that. Enola thought that she had heard the end of it and Damon thought that he would never see her again. While here she is. And she is pregnant by another man. She is happy with another man.

"What happened?" Enola questioned quietly.

"What happened is that Elena isn't dumb," Damon sighed. "She could see right through me."

"She didn't say anything," Enola shook her head.

"Because she didn't want you to feel responsible," Damon said.

"Damon, this has to stop." Enola pleaded. "I'm with Klaus."

"You don't think I know that?" Damon snapped. "I saw the way you looked at him. I saw the way you smiled at him."

"You need to move on," Enola sighed.

"Move on?" Damon echoed. "It's been six months. Six months and I have spent every moment of it thinking of you."

"Damon, please," Enola begged.

"You are just like Katherine," Damon spat. "Leading me on—"

"I have never once led you on. I made it clear from the start that I did not love you. I was honest with you and you have done nothing but punish me for it." Enola argued. "You know what? I'm not doing this with you."

Enola didn't wait for Damon to respond. She was already storming out the room, into the hallway, down the stairs and out the door.

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

Klaus could smell the familiar scent of Enola through the chilly November air. His head snapped to the side as worry began to flood his veins. He immediately ditched the search party without an explanation. His eyes frantically searched the area for his girl until he finally took a breath and calmed down. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the sound of her rapid beating heart until he was able to locate her.

Klaus was cautious as Enola came into view. She leaned against a tree with one hand over her chest and another hand over her mouth. His heart sank in his chest when he took note of the tears that stained her cheeks. He clenched his jaw at the thought of someone making his girl cry. His immediate response was to find out who and eat them alive. But he knew she needed him. So he stepped out into the open, alerting her to his presence. She immediately wiped her tears away and tried her best to smile. But it was too late.

"What happened, little monster?" Klaus spoke softly, grabbing Enola by the waist. "Tell me what happened."

"Promise not to be mad?" Enola whispered.

"Tell me what happened," Klaus repeated.

"Damon and I got into a fight," Enola confessed.

"What did he say to you?" Klaus spoke calmly.

"Promise not to get mad?" Enola begged.

"Enola—"

"Promise me!" Enola pleaded.

Klaus was quiet for what felt like eternity. It was clear that it was taking everything inside of him not to raise his voice. He was trying to be comforting, but the thought of Damon doing something to upset his girl struck a nerve. He had been nothing but cordial to the pain in his ass that was Damon Salvatore out of respect for Enola. But he was so close to beheading the fool.

"I promise," Klaus grunted through gritted teeth.

"He said he was still in love with me," Enola muttered.

Klaus stared at Enola for a long moment. And then he turned on his heels with murderous intent. He was going to kill Damon Salvatore and he was probably going to enjoy it. He had been fantasizing about this moment since he rolled into town. Now he was finally going to follow through with all of the threats. Until Enola blocked his path.

"Get out of my way," Klaus grumbled.

"Why? So you can kill him?" Enola frowned.

"Yes!" Klaus spat. "He has been after you since the very beginning. I won't stand for it."

"Then sit down," Enola supplied.

"I won't let him take what's mine," Klaus glared.

"I don't love him. I love you." Enola promised, backing Klaus against the nearest tree. "What can I do to make you believe that?" She asked rhetorically, pulling him forward by the collar of his shirt. "I don't love him. I love you."

Enola came down on Klaus. Hard. Her lips were soft but firm as she kissed him. Her tongue grazed his bottom lips, asking for entrance he happily gave up. Her hands tugged the expensive coat off his shoulders, allowing it to drop to the ground along with his henley shirt. She only broke the intense kiss to undo his belt. He smirked as his pants pooled around his ankles, leaving him exposed to her completely.

Enola dropped to her knees as Klaus gave his dick a few slow pumps. She grinned up at him as she took control. Her hand wrapped around his hardened cock, flicking her tongue over the tip. She felt him shiver at the new sensation, making her smirk at the power she had over him. She supposed anyone could do this. But not everyone could make him weak in the knees.

Klaus groaned out of pleasure when Enola licked a long stripe from shaft to tip. He pulled her hair out of the way like a makeshift hair tie, allowing her to take the entirety of his dick into her mouth without complication. He grunted when she hallowed her cheeks before slowly pulling back. She looked up at him with this taunting smirk before she began to mercilessly bob her head up and down. He cursed under his breath as she worked her magic. She could feel him getting close due to the prominent vein popping out of his neck. She began to slow down, teasing him in a way no one ever had.

Klaus growled as he hauled Enola to her feet. He pushed her back against the tree before yanking all her clothes off her body in one swift movement. He grabbed her by the hips, forcing her to jump and wrap her leg around his waist. His breathing was hard as he lined himself up with her entrance before slowly sinking into her. He froze at the familiar feeling of her heat. His forehead rested against her shoulder as he basked in the feeling of her closeness. He was done holding out on her.

Enola gasped when Klaus pulled out before slamming back in. She clung onto him as he began to pound into her, the rough bark of the tree digging into her back. His hips collided with hers like a missing piece to a puzzle. Suddenly nothing else seemed to matter. Especially not his kingdom back in New Orleans. And what was his kingdom without his queen? Nothing, he realized as he sent them both over the edge, absolutely nothing.

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

"Do you really have to go?"

After a very long and thorough search, they were able to recover Matt just in time to say goodbye to Enola. Her time in Mystic Falls has officially come to an end. She was sad about it. But she knew it was for the best. She was building a life for herself. She was going to college. She was having a baby. She was falling in love. She was no longer the girl she had once been, but she was happy. For the first time in forever, she was happy.

"Tell Katherine I hope her trip to hell is a bumpy one," Enola smirked.

"I love you," Jeremy muttered, pulling Enola into a bone crushing hug.

"I love you too," Enola smiled. "And I am happy you're alive."

"You have Bonnie to thank for that," Jeremy hummed, pulling away.

"Thank you Bonnie," Enola grinned, pulling the witch into a hug next.

"You wanna thank me?" Bonnie began. "Give your baby a life better than ours."

"That's the plan," Enola grinned as they pulled out of the hug.

"Make sure to call," Caroline demanded, stepping forward.

"Got it," Enola hummed, opening her arms wide for her friend.

"And text," Caroline continued, melting into the hug.

"Of course," Enola agreed, burying her face in her friend's shoulder.

"And email," Caroline went on, inhaling her friend's familiar scent.

"Will do," Enola smiled as they both reluctantly pulled apart.

"And facetime," Caroline finished, smiling brightly.

"She gets it, Care." Elena chuckled, bringing her sister into a hug.

"I think I'll miss you the most," Enola muttered in her sister's ear.

"Ditto," Elena sighed. "I love you, Nola. To the moon and back."

"I love you too," Enola smiled softly. "To the moon and back."

The one thing Enola hated the most was saying goodbye. It has never been easy for her. She never knew how to approach the concept. Every goodbye was different. Some are for a day and some are for a month. But others are forever. And the concept of forever is hard to accept. Especially in a world of immortals. Mostly because she knew that deep down the person who comes back is never the same person who left. And that was a hard pill to swallow.
