Alec awoke from a wondrous sleep filled with peaceful dreams by his brash and extremely loud sister, Isabelle Lightwood.
With her beauty and off-kilter charm, Isabelle was just starting to become a well-known actress in Hollywood. She had a shoot that day where she played the main role for an extremely cheesy rom-com. Alec had just come off a rather difficult breakup with a gorgeous man who thought a different man was more gorgeous than Alec himself. It had been the first time Alec had peacefully slept in days.
Of course, Isabelle had insisted he be an extra at the shoot. "It'll get you out of that post-breakup funk. Plus, you need more work than at that shabby old book store."
Defiantly, Alec had argued that the book store was in fact not shabby; it was quaint. His sister had rolled her eyes and told him to get lots of rest. Apparently, directors didn't like shadows under the eyes. Neither did Alec. Alas, that was what lost love did to you.
After squinting at the bright LA light from his window, Alec muttered some obscenities and smothered himself in his pillow, hoping only for the sweet release of death. Isabelle responded by literally pulling him off of his bed and dumping him on the floor.
Alec moaned in horror. "How did you even get in my apartment, Isabelle?"
"Oh please." Isabelle flipped her straight and glossy hair over her shoulder. "I've known how to jimmy locks since Jace taught me in middle school."
Of course. Somehow, his adopted brother was always the source of his agony. With some struggle, Alec peeled himself off of the floor. Isabelle strutted out of the room, making sure to yell much louder than necessary to wear something nice. Alec trudged to his closet, filled mostly with grays and blacks. Alec dressed for practicality, not for style. In the end, he decided on his only non-holey jeans and a fitted gray t-shirt.
He strode from his bedroom and presented the outfit to Isabelle. She gave her approval on the clothes, only to tell him he must at least brush his hair. God forbid he didn't impress her flashy director.
"Also, I'm making you pancakes!" she called from the kitchen. Alec shuddered. He would rather cut off his own genitals than eat anything Isabelle made, especially breakfast foods. After running a brush through his hair briefly, trying to not look at his tired face in the mirror, Alec announced he was ready to leave, turned off the stove, and dragged an angry Isabelle away.
"But what about your pancakes?" she protested.
"Trust me, I'll be just fine without them," Alec assured her.
LA traffic was absolutely horrible. The siblings drove in Isabelle's convertible, courtesy of her last high-paying movie. Passerbys recognized Alec's famous sister and snapped pictures, probably wondering why she was with someone as frumpy as Alec.
Thirty minutes and a whole lot of exhaust fumes later, Alec and Isabelle arrived on set. Isabelle gave her brother a solitary wink before Alec was whisked onto a set and set at a table. A coffee cup was sitting in front of him with his name on it.
They usually don't give extras actual food. I commandeered it. Whoever's sitting with you gets some too. Love you big brother.
Isabelle xoxo
Alec smiled for the first time that morning. He sipped his coffee - plain black, the way he liked it - and watched everyone else get ready for the scene. Extras were placed at other tables in the "coffee shop". Isabelle was talking animatedly with a nerdy-looking guy Alec knew was her love intetest... on and off-screen. Simon was nice and different from what Isabelle usually went for.
Just then a man was plopped down by a busy-looking girl with blue hair and a mischievous grin on her face. "Have fun, Magnus," she called as she hurried towards Isabelle, who gave her a wicked grin as she glanced back at Alec.
Alec, deciding not to care what Izzy was up to, turned back to the man opposite him... and stopped still.
Magnus, if that's what his name was, was hot. With his caramel skin and amber eyes staring at him, Alec about melted onto the floor. The man was glittery and bejewled, Alec noticed; he was wearing more makeup than most of the women on set, and his hair and nails were coated in green glitter.
That wasn't usually what Alec went for, but right then and there he decided it was downright perfect.
After giving him another once-over, Alec finally stopped to realize that Magnus was staring at him as well, his mouth slightly open. Possibly in awe? It was probably in horror at Alec's outfit choice. He could already tell Magnus was very fashion forward.
Deciding to break the tension, Alec said, "I'm pretty sure we shouldn't be just looking at each other the whole time we're here."
Magnus registered his words and looked up from where his eyes had rested on Alec's lips. "Oh... Sorry." He composed himself very quickly and held out his hand. "Magnus Bane."
"Alexander Lightwood, but I prefer Alec." He shook Magnus's hand as Magnus's eyes widened.
"As in Isabelle Lightwood? The actress?"
Alec sighed and nodded. "My little sister."
That same look of awe (Alec was sure it was awe now) returned to Magnus's face. "That must be one hell of an experience."
"It is," Alec chuckled. "Never, ever, eat her food. She couldn't cook to save her life."
Magnus grinned, probably imaging glamorous, red-carpet-ready Isabelle burning something. He was beautiful, and Alec didn't want his smile to ever fade away.
Then, he noticed the director yelling, "Aaaaand... Action!"
Isabelle and Simon started reciting their lines. Alec tuned it out, having already read the script and knowing the conversation was cringe-worthy. He picked up his cup and sipped his coffe. For the third time that day, Magnus looked at him incredulously.
"How'd you get coffee? They never give us real drinks!"
"Isabelle snuck some in. She got you some, too."
Magnus took of swig of the coffee and sighed. "You have no idea how much I needed that right now."
Alec smiled. It was so strange; he really wanted to make Magnus happy. They had just met, for God's sake!
"So, you sound like you've done this sort of thing before?" he asked Magnus.
With a dismissive flick of his hand, Magnus replied, "Oh, not too much. My friend Cat - you saw her earlier - she does camera things; I don't really know what they are. She drags me along once in awhile when she doesn't know anybody else on set."
"Cut!" the director called. Isabelle was giggling. "Simon, please remember that Mrs. Lightwood's name is not Isabelle. This is acting, not a date the two of you are on. Yes?"
Simon nodded with gusto, Isabelle still giggling at the whole affair. The director started the scene again, and Alec began a conversation with Magnus about LA life. Magnus loved it; Alec hated it. The only thing Magnus didn't appreciate about the city was the fact that hardly any apartment buildings allowed his cat, Chairman Meow. Alec laughed at the name, but nobody seemed to notice because they were in between takes.
The scene seemed to be everlasting. Izzy forgot her lines, some camera angle wasn't right, the boom mic got in the shot. The universe hated the film, but it loved Alec. He got to talk to Magnus for a lot longer than he'd expected, and it was wonderful. Magnus was bright and bubbly; he made Alec come out of his shell. He felt so conformable with Magnus, like they were on a real date, not just on a set.
On the 20th take, at least, the pair were joking about the director's awful hair, which they were sure was a toupeé.
"It's almost as bad as Donald Trump, I swear!" Alec whispered. Magnus cracked up, almost falling forward onto the table. He caught himself and met Alec's gaze. There was mirth there, but something else, too. Longing? That couldn't be; they had just met.
But, Alec felt it too.
They were still caught in that happy staring contest when the director yelled, "CUT! You two extras in the back, the boys smiling like idiots!"
Alec glanced around before realizing the director was talking about them. Stifling his laughter, Alec felt a blush heating up his cheeks.
"Boys, this scene is supposed to be showing how our main characters are falling in love, not the two extras behind them."
Isabelle snorted. Alec was sure his cheeks were as red as the director's awful shirt.
"Please, if you can help it, try to tone down the love eyes, yes?" Alec and Magnus nodded with vigor. "Again, people, we don't have all day!"
And so the scene started yet again. Alec and Magnus could barely contain their laughter.
"You're cute when you blush," Magnus commented slyly. Alec felt the heat rise back into his cheeks, right after it had gone away. Magnus thought he was cute!
"Thanks... You're cute too..." Alec clamped a hand over his mouth. He was never any good with complimemts, especially to people who as gorgeous as Magnus.
Magnus just smiled some more.
"Cut! That's a wrap, people!" The whole crew cheered. Finally, the wretched scene was over. But it meant Alec and Magnus had to say goodbye. Alec followed Magnus to get his jacket, trying to work up the courage to ask for a date, or least his number.
Magnus beat him to it. "So, I'm free the rest of the day, and I'd like to drink something other than plain black coffee. Care to join me?"
Alec stuttered out a 'yes' and kissed Magnus without a second thought.
The whole world disappeared in that moment. Alec wrapped his arms around a shocked Magnus's neck, pulling him closer. After a second of being stuck, frozen, Magnus followed his lead, running his hands through Alec's hair. Alec sighed. It shouldn't have felt that natural to kiss Magnus. They had met an hour ago. But, somehow, it felt like they had kissed each other a million times before.
They broke apart to a chorus of 'awww's'. Alec turned to see half of the cast and crew watching them with little smiles. He saw Isabelle and Cat high-five. Rolling his eyes, he shooed them away.
"You're blushing again," Magnus said.
"Well, it's not everyday I kiss a hot guy I just met," Alec retorted, beaming. "Let's go get some lunch; I'm famished."
With that, Magnus took his hand, gave him a peck on the cheek, and something beautiful was born.
