Alec was in love.

That much was obvious to literally everyone else, but Alec had only truly realized it an hour ago when Clary had shown the whole Clave her rune power. He knew that she had shown him who he loved most. It was Magnus. Of course it was Magnus; who else could it be? Magnus was the most important person in his life. He had shown him a totally different world and made him see his true self.

It was Magnus who made him feel special, and Alec was so stupid to not realize it sooner.

He needed to find Magnus, because he needed to tell him he loved him; he also needed a partner for the battle. There was nobody else he wanted. It felt so good to say these things in his head. He just had to say them out loud.

Upon his fruitless search, Alec stumbled on Izzy and Simon. Apparently, Jace's father wasn't really Valentine. It was Stephen Herondale. Sure, Alec was happy for him. Now he could be with Clary all he wanted. But, he couldn't fully concentrate on the conversation, for his mind was solely on Magnus.

Learning that Jace's father was Stephen, a dark corner of Alec's mind realized that the Inquisitor was so hostile to Jace because of that reason. He may have voiced that thought, but it probably wasn't coherent...

{"Why she what?" Isabelle demanded. "Alec, pay attention. Or at least tell us what you're looking for."}

{"Not what," said Alec. "Who. Magnus. I wanted to ask him if he'd be my partner in the battle. But I've no idea where he is. Have you seen him?" he asked, directing his question at Simon.}

{Simon shook his head. "He was up on the dais with Clary, but"- he craned his neck to look-" he's not now. He's probably in the crowd somewhere."}

Alec, too, craned his neck, desperately searching for his love. He told his friends why he was looking for Magnus (the latter reason, obviously), but when Izzy said she could be Simon's partner, Alec was snapped into reality.

{"Isabelle, you don't need a partner, because you're not fighting. You're too young. And if you even think about it, I'll kill you." His head jerked up.}

{"Wait- is that Magnus?" Isabelle, following his gaze, snorted. "Alec, that's a werewolf . A girl werewolf. In fact, it's what's-her-name. May."}

Oh. Alec's face flushed in embarrassment. His excitement had gotten the better of him, and he had mistaken Magnus for a girl werewolf. Nevertheless, Alec kept looking, until he was sure he had found his warlock.

{Alec's face lit up. "There's Magnus," he said, and took off without a backward glance, shearing a path through the crowd to the space where the tall warlock stood. Magnus's surprise as Alec approached him was visible, even from this distance.}

"Alec, what are you doing?" Magnus hissed, and for a minute you could swear he really was a cat. "Your parents are watching us."

He was right. The Lightwoods were watching anxiously a few feet away. Maryse looked confused, while Robert just looked enraged. Alec gave them a meek smile and turned back to Magnus.

"I don't care anymore," Alec announced, slowly feeling the weight lifting off his shoulders. "I do not care about my stupid parents, or my stupid country, or my stupid duty. All I care about anymore is you."

Magnus seemed taken aback. He probably never guessed Alec would ever give up anything for him.

"But, Alec, your people-"

"Screw my people." For a moment he felt like Jace, all brash and devil-may-care. But who couldn't feel that way when they looked at the person they loved?

Alec took a deep breath. "Just... Can you be my partner? In the battle, I mean."

Magnus nodded. "Anything for you, if course." He said it as though it was a reflex; he still looked slightly shocked from Alec's outburst. Pulling out his stele, Alec grabbed Magnus's arm and started drawing carefully, still a bit wary of a Downworlder rune. But, it stayed, and he handed the instrument to Magnus. They were silent, focused on the task at hand, nervous for the battle.

Magnus finished drawing the rune on Alec's arm and stood straight, holding the stele like he was waiting for something. Alec was waiting, too. They were supposed to be sharing powers; wasn't it supposed to feel different.

"Maybe it didn't work," Alec remarked. "I don't feel any-"

Then he stopped, for right then he felt some of Magnus's magic flow into him. It wasn't even close to all Magnus could do, Alec sensed. But, just a fraction of his power was amazing to feel. The magic coursing through his veins, the sheer awesomeness that came with what Magnus was, almost made Alec dizzy.

But, at the same time, it was so heavy. There was power, but there was so much power Alec felt he was being suffocated. How could Magnus live with this? He had lived for hundreds of years; imagine the burden he must have felt with all of his magic.

When Alec could finally focus on something again, he saw Magnus with an expression he was sure he was making as well. Apparently, Magnus was feelings the affects of the rune as well. And, while it was strange, it was also satisfying. Alec had never been so connected to Magnus before.

He stood up straight, squared his shoulders, took a deep breath, and said it. "I love you, Magnus Bane." Magnus just stared. "When Clary showed us who we loved the most, I saw you, and I was so stupid for believing I could love anyone else but you. And I'm so sorry for that, but I hope that maybe I could make it up to you, eventually."

The ending sounded more like a question to Alec. He knew he was screwing this all up; Magnus looked like he was on the verge of tears. So, he did the only thing he thought would solve anything.

He kissed Magnus, in front of everyone. Magnus stood stiff in shock. Murmuring had begun from the people around him, and soon everyone would know. Like Alec had said, however, he didn't fucking care.

After the original surprise, Magnus melted into Alec, kissing him back with the force of someone who loved. Alec still registered the whispers of the conservative Shadowhunters standing around him. Some were even yelling at them now, and Alec decided it was time to end the show. He pulled back, and Magnus's eyes were still shining. Now, Alec knew he was just happy.

"Thank you," Magnus beamed. "I love you, too."
